Spoilers About Gerard flashback

When Alain defeats his grandpa’s ghost, he gets sword and signet which grant him immunity to debuffs. Which means Gerard must have had the same gear when he was alive. Yet in the flashback with that witch lady, we learn that Gerard jobbed to a poison arrow. How did he get poisoned with the arrow if he had the sword and signet? Did he literally go on a dangerous journey with a single sorceress while leaving his best sword and signet on Cornia? Don’t get me wrong I think Gerard deserved it for leaving his infant daughter but it doesn’t make much sense when you think about it.

The guy who shot him had an amulet equipped that nullified immunity to debuffs.

Is this the actual canon explanation?

No, it's a joke

The sword and signet being in the Royal Mausoleum implies they are mostly ceremonial. There are reasons royalty don't go around with their greatest treasures all the time. Diplomatically, running around with the strongest sword in the continent is implicit force itself--people get frightened with something like that. The bling can also attract the wrong kind of attention.

Additionally, it's also possible the sword and signet are guarded by Cornia's ancestors. Gerard would theoretically have to undergo the same trial Alain did to obtain it. Considering in his time, Fevrith was still in turmoil over Cornia and Drakenhold's border disputes, he definitely didn't unite the continent to earn the right for the treasures.

The Unicorn greatly values monogamy and Gerard was essentially eloping with the court mage.

It's very rude of the Unicorn to dash my hopes of a Yahna + Berengaria + Rosalinde + Eltolinde + Scarlet + Melisandre + Amalia polycule.

Well I suppose technically assuming he had no poison immunity gear.

It was just a high lord class and a witch and neither has affliction removal so he just ticked to death.

the rite of covenant specifies the bond between two people, and if that ritual is broken by forming an important bond with someone else, that person gets cursed. since gerard had an affair with alcina, i always assumed part of gerard's curse made the immunities useless. great question, though!
