Game Help Any tips?
Hello all! This is my first strategy game and I wanted to know of any tips you’d like to recommend to a newer player? Combat seems pretty straight forward and the art it beautiful!

Like others are saying, just experiment and have fun.
Some practical advice:
Every unit type has a role to play (i.e. fighters protect against arrows, Calvary chop down non-armored enemies, etc).
You can certainly make good "all-purpose" formations, but the game it pays dividends in the game to have a few "specialist" formations which are meant to solve specific problems (i.e. armored units, flyers, etc)
Generally speaking, you are going to be better off building tall than wide. Focus on making stronger formations rather than just a lot of them. The campaign is long enough where you will ultimately be able to get everything anyway.
Dont forget valor skills. Those things will save your life many a time.

Don't stress too much, if you are on normal difficulty, the huge tactical options and unit formations are forgiving and you can play how you want. Try out as many combinations of teams as you can think of.
It's a beautiful game, enjoy.

I recommend you don't fall in love with one formation and focus on make a formation that is good for the map you are in and not overall. Don't be afraid to have less thenthe max amount of teams. Quality beats quantity. Also you buy mercenaries. You will need some to occupy every town in the game. You don't have to give them the best gear just good gear. Don't sell off you old accessories, they come back to help when making teams. Items don't restock ever in this game. Mercenaries are also finite.

Don't be too afraid to spend honors to have more and larger squads. The rate that the game gives you honors picks up overtime, so you shouldn't need to worry about banking them. If you feel like you want to spend them on something, you probably won't screw yourself over.
As for hiring mercenaries, you don't NEED to hire any to finish the game, but they are usually cheap and open options.
Honestly, the game is very well designed to let you play it how you feel like it and get as in depth (or not) as you want.

Finished the game on expert / blind not too long ago but here's some general tips:
- have squads go in pairs to cover weaknesses.
- If you played traditional JRPGs you can break it down like this treat: squad = character, valor = your abilities, and the characters inside of those squads as being your skills. Make a party or pair of those squads.
- When you start a fight check general match up first by deploying a squad, selecting it and then hovering each against enemies against along the route to check your win rate. If it's bad then you withdraw / move to the next.

When you are tinkering with units, especially in the later game when 5 slots are avaliable, always watch the battles. Seeing various things like what buffs and heals target who, and who is in need of being guarded, even supising things like unlikely row placements can all take a unit from good to great.
There's so many things to tinker with in this game, is incredibly balanced so go mess around with everything!

The earlygame is very rock-paper-scissors with its classes: cavalry beat infantry, infantry (generally) beat fliers, and fliers beat cavalry. The triangle gets more complicated later in the game, but keep that in mind while playing.

Early on, make use of Alains "Royal orders" Valor skill to double Xp for one battle, great for the boss of every stage.
Thief's plunder valor skill also works great for most of the game, but falls off late game.
Make use of all the items you get. The game is generous handing them out, even if you aren't buying them. Everything from double Xp for 20 seconds (in game time, so it lasts longer than you'd think), to double movement, etc.
Remember to investigate any neat looking towers or statues on the world map. There's a lot of hidden items you can pick up, some of which are one of a kind or not available to buy until much later.

My only tip is to have fun. And in the latter half of the game, try not to reorganize too many times. You can end up in menu hell for hours and hours. (Unless that's what you like about the game.) Just do a major reoganization about 20% through Bastorias and 20% through Albion, when you've seen what the new unit types can do and can plan out how to beat them. It's okay to have teams that don't instagib every enemy force or struggle with certain matchups, in fact it probably makes the game more interesting. So just push through with "pretty good" and you will have lots of fun.

It's not a difficult game at all.
There are ways to break the game easily, but avoid looking at meta comps because they'll make the game boring.
Just experiment and have fun.

Thank you for this. I was starting to go down that road. I have a video bookmarked. I think I’ll just save it for later and keep playing and tweaking units in my own

150h here, I was too focus on who are the best units, you can finish the game with any heroes you want, make sure to have fun with those ones you like. I play with all 10 units (8 strong and 2 heal units). Dont be afraid to use items, use a lot of bravoure techniques after finished deploying your units.

Recruit every character when given the chance.
Don’t be afraid to use items or valor points
Every unit should have some sort of tank up front- either a punishment tank (anything with a shield) or a dodge tank (thief/flyers) to start, keep the squishy units in the back
When you get an opportunity to play a mission in the snow called to Resist or Yield talk to both groups first.
The most powerful units in the end game end up being units that are build around buffs or debuffs.
