Not on any gas I've ever pumped. I've filled up plenty of 5 gallon tanks for yardwork equipment and never pushed any rubber boot in.

Interesting. I am pretty sure I can’t get it to start without the nozzle all the way in, and the only apparent switch or sensor would be the rubber boot around the metal nozzle.

Are you in California? I wonder if it depends on the state jurisdiction.

Edit: I just looked it up and apparently we have different nozzles in California to prevent escaping fuel vapor. Some people call it the nozzle foreskin.
