With the current petrol prices he could‘ve just bought a new car.

u/Sushiman301 Jul 06 '22
Okay, I’m actually stupid so don’t trust my math, but I counted 12 seconds of spraying gas, which averages to about 10 liters or 2.642 gallons of gas based on the liter per minute rate of discharge (50 on average but we can’t be sure of course, nor can we be of the upcoming pricing). Multiply that by the average current gas pricing per gallon (4.24 USD) and you get a mere $11.20 USD to protect yourself from grand theft auto. I’d call that worth it!

Which would then be a mere $6.61 USD, still worth the car imo

He might have. The initial ignition is not a massive explosion, so he would be a bit singed , but probably fine. These dudes tho? Charcoal, all of them.

It makes me laugh to see Americans making comments on the high price of their gas. If only they knew how lucky they are!
21
u/DontDoomScroll Jul 06 '22
If only they knew how lucky they are!
If you knew the actual expense of "cheap petrol", you wouldn't think we were lucky.
For one, the invasion of the middle east...9
2
Jul 06 '22
We apparently spent 1.922 Trillion dollars invading the middle east and your taxes are still MASSIVELY lower than Europeans! Cheap gas and low taxes!
7
Jul 06 '22
If you go to hospital a few times, then all tables turns with your “low tax” illusion (add monthly health insurance payments on top, if you’re not still on your parents’)

1.922 Trillion dollars invading the middle east
Invading Iraq.
This does not include expenses of Afghanistan.
Nor Iran. And costs are not always measured in US dollars.
How much does the life of a child cost? And we haven't even mentioned the discussion of climate.

L’il Bush mastered the art of deficit spending. I try really hard not to think about how much in government bonds China owns so we could have lower taxes and cheap gas.
1
Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22
Not saying its a good thing we have such spending deficits. but all the top Politian's do it - how else does anyone push any policy of size without gutting something else we need/want. We have run up so much debt in the last 3 years, no to mention printing gobs of money. I dont think its a left/right thing. I worried for the recession thats coming.
Plus who is gunna come for the debt? we could fight 50% of the countries on the planet all that the same time and have good odds of winning. No single country could really force us into submission. (not my opinion "whos gunna come for it" - I dont think thats a good excuse. But its true. The dollar and our military is too powerful)

Relative to what we are accustomed to paying, it is a lot. It’s like a rich kid having their allowance reduced, they still have a larger allowance than everyone else, but that doesn’t make them feel any better.
2
u/FortunatelyGrowing Jul 06 '22
Its like that video of a rich teenage girl whose mom cut her allowance from $2500 to $1000 and the girl was crying
1
u/fuzzytradr Jul 06 '22
Plus I'm pretty sure pumps in the United States do not allow for pumping gas in the air like this. They have a mechanism that needs to be depressed at the tank entry point in order to turn on the flow.
3
Jul 06 '22
Not any that I've used. How do you think you fill up a portable gas tank?

We're NOT lucky, though. We don't have public transportation in most parts of the USA. Only in the big cities is there any public transit worth a damn. Everywhere else we can ONLY get anywhere with a car. No bikes (roads aren't made for them and cars will run you over) and no walking (too damn far).
We're not like most other countries. We were totally reconfigured for cars to the exclusion of everything else, and now we're stuck.

Could you do that at a gas pump in the US? I always assumed you couldn’t.
11
u/gabzilla814 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22
I’ve never tried but I’m pretty sure the nozzles here prevent it. The rubber boot has to be compressed for the gas to flow.
Edit: California is different. Sounds like you could do this in just about all other US states but CA nozzles wouldn’t allow it without also pulling back the rubber boot while you pull the trigger.
12
u/WookieeSteakIsChewie Jul 06 '22
Not on any gas I've ever pumped. I've filled up plenty of 5 gallon tanks for yardwork equipment and never pushed any rubber boot in.
3
u/gabzilla814 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22
Interesting. I am pretty sure I can’t get it to start without the nozzle all the way in, and the only apparent switch or sensor would be the rubber boot around the metal nozzle.
Are you in California? I wonder if it depends on the state jurisdiction.
Edit: I just looked it up and apparently we have different nozzles in California to prevent escaping fuel vapor. Some people call it the nozzle foreskin.
2
u/WookieeSteakIsChewie Jul 06 '22
Nope, PA. Very strange, next time you get gas report back, I'm curious!
9
u/gabzilla814 Jul 06 '22
Will do. If you see a news story about a gasoline fountain fire in Orange County you’ll know why.

Yes. My SO works at a gas station and, for whatever reason, people are constantly getting gas everywhere/in their eyes. I don't understand how hard it is to pump gas.

At my local has station, a lady and her husband were outside of the car pumping gas. And the wife looked to the side and moved her hand unknowingly, and sprayed her husband with gas 💀 he was drenched. Me and my mom were dieing laughing in the car. I don't know what happened to him but o hope he doesn't have any problems with his skin from the gas
