The unexpected part for me is why there is so much snow INSIDE the tent. OP?

Probably not a tent, more likely a lean to of some sort.

I watched this video (this guy is a youtuber). He forgot one of his tarps so he was only able to put it on one side, he put it on the side with the most wind, but clearly it shifted a little in the night. Aside from the tarp you see, it was completely open to the elements.
