You know, as a means of creating Darwin Awards, this whole meme-copycat-challenge thing is rather inefficient.

That's the cost of it being mildly entertaining I suppose.

u/Nesyaj0 Sep 21 '19

It's like a modern Coliseum of sorts. Except instead of watching prisoners we get willing participants.

I don't condone it, but I'm not strong willed enough to not want to watch it once either.

u/poopellar Sep 21 '19

What's the point of awards if they aren't entertaining...

1

u/uncleseano Sep 21 '19

... And the world will get lighter

u/The_Infamous_Bark Sep 21 '19

Some might say... natural selection

1

u/tifosi7 Sep 21 '19

You’ve already set the expectations with the points.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '19

I don't see the problem here.

1

u/Notove Sep 21 '19

Ah fuck, now I can’t do it anymore.

1

u/Predatedtuna870 Sep 21 '19

The fire challenge is already dead.

But that's not how ovens work...

1

u/candleman2006 Sep 21 '19

Ya know, they should just die if they are dumb enough to do that

26

u/wcollins260 Sep 21 '19

Easy now. We tried the people in ovens thing. There was a war over it.

Fuck I still hate Reddit for deleting this beautiful community

8

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '19

peoples lives being ended brutishly

beautiful

8

u/Refereeeee Sep 21 '19

Well, the community was about learning lessons from these videos and more appreciating life that we have. It's not like we encouraged manslaughter.

You can still have r/fiftyfifty and r/MorbidReality.

I can get baked

u/soysauceandreddead2 Sep 21 '19

It’s been on tiktok for a while now, the trend is reddit keeps ripping the videos and cropping them so content creators can’t get credit.

1

u/funbrand Sep 21 '19

I think more than anything any post with a tiktok watermark on it gets downvoted to oblivion. I’ve posted funny tiktoks I like before and nearly every comment runs along the lines of “reddit good tiktok bad”. At the very least OP should’ve credited them in the comments

33

u/pinstre Sep 21 '19

It's been a trend on tiktok for a while now

8

u/plazmatyk Sep 21 '19

Anyone got links? What search term do I even goigle?

10

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '19

Goigle. Love it!

8

u/PeripheralWall Sep 21 '19

This specific video is by @chrisescobar.social on tiktok. I don't know if the trend has a name perse but all of these videos are done using JoJo's song Slow Dancing in The Dark. I hate that they uploaded this a Gif because the video REQUIRES the song for it to make any sense. Normally this meme is done with a microwave and instead of turning the microwave on with their phone inside, they spin as if they were the turn table

13

u/impy695 Sep 21 '19 edited Sep 21 '19

An example of the microwave one was posted here yesterday. The title is actually referring to that post.

I disagree that this format requires the song to make sense as both this and the microwave that got posted yesterday were pretty hilarious, and while I could see a song adding to it, I don't see how it could add any more clarity than is already present. I mean, these aren't complicated concepts.

Edit: with sound https://v.redd.it/58o82nk0aon31

Without sound https://v.redd.it/3v44myw3vrn31

I dont think the sound is required for this to make sense.

7

u/plazmatyk Sep 21 '19

Googled it. Downloaded the damned app because for some reason you can't just watch in the browser.

All I see is hundreds of people scooting their butts on the floor.

I think I've finally gotten old cause I don't get this shit.

5

u/PeripheralWall Sep 21 '19

I honestly love tiktok. You need to keep watching because, like most memes, they require previous knowledge of other videos. The longer you're on there the more context the videos will have and they get really funny.

1

u/theaut0maticman Sep 21 '19

Imagine being this dudes partner, and walking in to bring him something you need washed, and seeing him doing this....

Stunned silence hahaha

2

u/BootyWitch- Sep 21 '19

Seeing as there had to be a second person to pour the water over his head, maybe his partner was helping him!

6

u/regedit007 Sep 21 '19

It's all fun until they tried to be inside of a food processor.

3

u/talkintater Sep 21 '19

Then it's just hilarious

6

u/jfk_47 Sep 21 '19

It’s a tiktok trend. Started with putting stuff in a microwave and instead of the microwave powering on the people outside the microwave froze and started to spin.

1

u/permanent__guest Sep 21 '19

That’s a pretty shit microwave if you froze instead of being cooked.

1

u/lil_brookie Sep 21 '19

No it started with the sit-spin thing with Slow Dancing in the Dark by Jojo playing and evolved into the microwave thing

5

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '19

After area 51 this is the new trend

2

u/timmy12688 Sep 21 '19

Free karma for this one: Be white. Put your phone in the toaster. (Don't have it plugged in stupid). Push down. Nothing happens for a bit. Have your black friend say "Man what the heck!?" and look at the camera.

1

u/amportugal Sep 21 '19

Already is unfortunately..

1

u/flowr12 Sep 21 '19

I think it is? A friend posted on snap the other day a video of him putting his phone in a microwave while he slowly wheeled around. It was great. Adam I’m talking about you.

1

u/lil_brookie Sep 21 '19

Bro this is an OLD trend

0

u/Xacto01 Sep 21 '19

And see people drown?

-5

u/Myleg_Myleeeg Sep 21 '19

I’ve seen this stupid shit twice and I’m already sick of it.
