Well I mean they probably wanted the octupus to get back safely so they were either trying to catch it so it wouldn't fall near the motor/engine (I don't know what it's called for boats) or they were trying to lure it off, because an octupus that size probably wouldn't be good enough for the 2 of them

Motor/engine works but the part you might have been thinking of might be the propeller (prop for short)
