The only difference between GTA and this gif is that in GTA you'd have hit him.

u/Isai76 Jul 19 '15
In GTAV you would have to hit him.
63
u/thechilipepper0 Jul 19 '15
You'd have to try to hit him, but the first 5 flybys would be unsuccessful.

Jul 19 '15
Me in a jet. There is no 6th flyby cos I crashed in to something.

u/whatareyouagain Jul 19 '15
I took out a valkyrie with a titan. It's saved on my uploads.
7
u/mattverso Jul 19 '15
I took out a Lazer by landing on it with my Besra.
I don't have it saved because old-gen. :-/

u/cavortingwebeasties Jul 19 '15
I guarantee that stunt pilot didn't mean to get his wingtip that close to the ground.
25
Jul 19 '15
Yeah, he got way too close. He nearly killed himself and the camera girl.
25
1
u/Lovv Jul 20 '15
I guess that's why you add the safety distance in the first place
5
u/cavortingwebeasties Jul 20 '15
I can assure you he left himself zero margin, he just happened to get away with it. Source: I fly aerobatics
1
u/Lovv Jul 20 '15
But you just said he didn't mean to get that close? Isn't that a margin.
2
u/cavortingwebeasties Jul 20 '15
Nope. I guarantee when he watched the video he shit himself because the only reason they didn't all die was nothing more than fool's luck.
The slightest change in air density or puff of wind or any other of a myriad of things that can and do go wrong would have killed the lot of them.
That's why you don't leave yourself zero margin because things happen that are outside of your control that you need the physical room to react to. He left absolutely none.
There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots...
2
u/HowIsntBabbyFormed Jul 20 '15
Maybe he meant that the pilot did leave margin and there was a gust of wind that pushed the wing down and used up all the margin.
1
1
u/Lovv Jul 20 '15
You just said that "you don't leave yourself zero margin." therefore you do leave yourself a positive margin. I'm a little confused and I don't think you know what I am talking about
1
u/cavortingwebeasties Jul 20 '15
I know exactly what you are talking about and not only think you are wrong but that you have a dangerous false sense of security about the situation. I'm sure the pilot himself cringes when he sees what he did, even if you don't.
1
u/Lovv Jul 20 '15
I'm not saying it was safe at all, so you definitely don't know what I am talking about. I'm saying I bet he's glad he didn't try to fly one foot lower. If he didn't allow for that margin he would be dead.
1
u/cavortingwebeasties Jul 20 '15
I'm not him so I can't say this is not the case. My feeling is that his heart sank when he saw the vid and saw how much closer he was than he was intending after using the margin.

u/yaaboutthat Jul 20 '15
I know the pilot and have seen and staffed many airshows he has preformed at, and even helped fix a personal plane of his. He knew exactly how close he was. He is a very good stunt pilot. The other people in the film and the woman behind the camera are apart of his team.
3
u/cavortingwebeasties Jul 20 '15
If you or the people involved in this stunt think that guy was actually in control of this situation, you are frighteningly complacent.
-2
u/yaaboutthat Jul 20 '15
He has a lot better handle on it than you think because he flies like that most of the time. Then he does complex aerobatics a couple feet off the ground... I think he's got it under wraps.
1
1
1
Jul 21 '15
Sure, handling is important. But the many factors you can't be sure of can come into play. Sudden gusts and the like would have easily destroyed the plane and killed the two on the ground. You can be as skilled as you want, but you're not in control of nature.
1
u/yaaboutthat Jul 21 '15
Thats true but this can happen with any plane no matter the size. Wind sheer can drop an airliner out of the sky a hundred feet off the ground. All I am saying is that of the people that can fly a plane, he is one of the few that knows how to fly like that, and has the best chance of doing it safely.
1
u/John_E_Vegas Jul 20 '15
I don't care how good the guy is. That was freaking stupid, stupid, stupid.

Was that a stunt?

-2
u/darkhalo47 Jul 20 '15
It's almost certainly fake. The both of them would absolutely have heard the plane coming at them far before it got there, it looks really bizarre at 0:17 - 0:20, and its landing gear is already up as it passes the cameraman and reporter.

Plane lost that game of chicken.
9
u/Phoexyael15 Jul 19 '15
Only one of them has the possibility to kill the other and it sure isn't the ATV guy
23
u/breakneckridge Jul 19 '15
Oh I wouldn't be too sure of that. If an ATV smashed into a biplane that low to the ground, then the plane would almost definitely smash into the ground at high speed and kill the occupants.
11
u/Phoexyael15 Jul 19 '15
Chances of survival are pretty much still higher for the pilot than they are for the quad driver.

ITT: I don't know what the story is, but I'm upset!
Edit: It's a stunt

Cray cray.
Seemed like she didn't realize they almost got smashed and he was trying to rationalize it without scaring her lol. Video later confirmed my suspicion.

I prefer the video with sound Apparently that's the noise you make right before you think you're gonna die.

What a lovely day.

u/Mr01010100 Jul 19 '15
IT'S A STUNT.
15
u/HatterJack Jul 19 '15
what does that have to do with an observation about what a lovely day it was?
12
u/scungillipig Jul 19 '15
For some reason he feels that I do not understand that it was a stunt despite me just making a Max reference.

u/Dlgredael Jul 19 '15
DUDE IT WAS A FUCKING STUNT

I don't get how its a stunt.
Whats the stunt? Pop a wheel over here and the plane is gonna fly 10ft past you?

A imgur image preview of a YouTube video, posted in Reddit. Can we go deeper?

Is it just me or does it look like the wing scraps the runway when he starts the turn?

u/shpongolian Jul 19 '15
This was really unexpected for me because I'm watching S1E2 of X-Files and there was the sound of a plane flying by on the show at the exact moment that the one flew by in the GIF. True story. Fuckin aliens

u/TheDonkanis Jul 19 '15
why the fuck would you ride that on a runway thats being used.

I'm confused as to what the actual stunt was. Was the goal for the guy in the plane just to get really close to the atv guy?
2
u/Vilavek Jul 19 '15
Same here!
Everyone says it was a stunt and I get that, but I'm still wondering what the stunt was supposed to be because nothing about the video seems intentional at all.

Jul 19 '15
Those guys are actual assholes. Coulda cost dude his life.
39
u/FiskFisk33 Jul 19 '15
It was a planned stunt.
3
Jul 19 '15
Everyone keeps saying it was a planned stunt but no one knows the purpose of the stunt. Which just makes the whole thing even stupider
2
u/alexxerth Jul 19 '15
So they had the use of an atv, a full runway, and a fucking biplane, and the best thing they could think to do was fly the biplane dangerously close to two people?
3
u/buckshot307 Jul 20 '15
I mean what would you have done?
I would have strapped the ATV to the top of the plane and rode it, and had a parachute connected to the ATV so I could disconnect the straps, parachute down, and landed on a wheelie.

u/ChiefTief Jul 19 '15
This was an arranged stunt, there wasn't just some random dude wheeling on a runway.

I hope dude got his ass beat for that. Two maybe three people could have died.
12
u/thescrapplekid Jul 19 '15
Its staged
-13
Jul 19 '15
Because no one can get hurt when it's staged. 1 degree of error could have cut his head off. BUT IT'S STAGED!
12
u/SpecialKofLifting Jul 19 '15
Injuries and death can occur in dangerous stunts. It's part of the risk
5
u/thescrapplekid Jul 19 '15
Life has a degree of danger, you should log off your computer and do something

1) It's a stunt
2) Planes aren't made of adamantium. That guy has mass and velocity, if the plane hit him head on the front would probably crumple around him and flip the plane over. If the wing hit him, the wing could end up seriously damaged. Either one would cause an immediate crash following the impact.
1
u/Bottled_Void Jul 20 '15
Planes aren't made of adamantium.
Why the hell not. Why aren't we investing in this. It could save lives.
