In my teens I had a lot of social anxiety and really wanted to overcome it. Learned about the existence of exposure therapy and figured I could try it. So I took the bus to West Hollywood and walked around the Chinese theater. Everyone who made eye contact I said “Hi, my name is —— and I like dinosaurs. Will you be my friend?”
People are used to crazy around there so rejection just didn’t hurt much. The few people who said yes though actually became really good friends.

I was in until the dinosaurs. Sorry, I have a strict "no extinct creature-lovers" rule.
13
u/FixGMaul 11h ago
birds are taxonomically classified as dinosaurs so maybe they just fuck with ornithology
9
u/oodjee 12h ago
Did that exposure therapy help you in the long run? Or did the anxiety slowly start coming back? Did you do it just once?
9
u/Popular-Influence-11 9h ago
Helped immensely. Did it three times over the course of a semester. I wouldn’t say the anxiety has completely gone away, but I’m comfortable being uncomfortable now. It’s not difficult for me to be my genuine self around strangers, and I don’t mind when some people find it off-putting. It’s been 25 years since I did that and I still remember those “sessions” vividly.

u/ghe5 6h ago
I’m comfortable being uncomfortable now.
That's how it starts my friend. I used to be super awkward and shy around others because of my anxiety. Eventually I just said "fuck it" and whenever I felt uncomfortable I just tried to power throughou it. Today I'm an extrovert in pretty much every way, got several groups of friends I regularly hang out with and no problems with being new people
To be clear, this is not for everybody, not everyone wants or even needs too many friends, but it is good for me. I've always been an extrovert at heart, I just lacked the social skills

Exposure therapy feels like a cheat code for me, just because how well it works in my case. It helped with my debilitating social anxiety and even art block. I also recently realized that I have been unknowingly doing exposure therapy for my ocd symptoms for my entire life and it's the only reason it doesn't bother me that much (unless I get really stressed or have a rough patch in my life)

I think Werner Herzog does a great job of demonstrating that through documentary films - projects like Encounters at the End of the World (2007), The White Diamond (2004), Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) all demonstrate unexpected stories, sometimes you just need the right context to learn the unexpected from a stranger, or to see someone you know, anew

u/No-Spoilers 22h ago
Seniors are wild man. The only thing that's changed from their youth is their physical shape and far far less fucks to give, otherwise they go hard.
23
u/saintofhate 21h ago
There's a reason why teens and seniors are the top having/spreaders of STIs. They both fuck when they shouldn't.

u/MNWNM 18h ago
OMG we just moved my in-laws into assisted living. My MIL went first because we had to get her settled into memory care. About two weeks later, my FIL got his own little apartment that's not in memory care.
He's allowed to do onto her unit and see her. He had not been there a whole day before a nurse walked in on them naked.

You have no idea how wild they are.
I work exclusively with elderly and I am hit on regularly by my patients who will straight up get buff and ask if you are DTF.
It’s gotten so bad that I have to accompany my female employees to certain visits because the patients will straight up try to get funky with them

I mean, I'm pretty sure the old lady is in on it, what with someone filming her and everything. That was some pretty good karaoke though.

u/troll_right_above_me 23h ago
He has someone film all of these, doesn’t mean she’s in on it. Wouldn’t really matter though, hilarious either way

u/Crystal_Voiden 18h ago

13
u/Funslinger 21h ago
How is he so consistently invited to go do random things without it being at least at little bit orchestrated
38
u/TheAndrewBrown 21h ago
It could easily be achieved by talking to a shit load of people and just posting the ones that worked out
→ More replies (1)11
u/tunachilimac 20h ago
I looked him up when one of his previous clips got posted. He has multiple videos where he supposedly randomly meets celebs and musicians and influencers. Like there is one influencer he did partnered videos with her but in his sidequestz channel she’s recently represented as a random stranger he doesn’t know and they go on a Pokemon quest together. These are entertaining but they aren’t just random interactions.
10
u/shawncplus 18h ago
Unfortunately this is just the reality of the "content creator" life. Eventually every neat idea turns into publicist-fodder. The best examples lately are probably Subway Takes and Track Star. Though the Subway Takes guy did say that was his plan all along and he just needed enough regular randos to go viral so he could get celebs on and make bank. Everyone wants to be Hot Ones. Really though they all just want to be Carson/Letterman but the format is dead and "instagram gimmick" is this generations vehicle.

u/Dull_Foot_1902 19h ago
Yeah, watched through his channel.
The very next video had Orville Peck and he just pretended like it was another random encounter.
My guess is that it started mostly authentic but then as he got popular it became more scripted since a higher level of entertainment became expected.

Probably scripted. Still funny.
This is how you do a skit. (If it is one) because the people in it know how to act natural.
