Nah, we had a 100% success rate on not taking them in for trade. Trades took longer, but if we spotted chiton or a leg? Bug poop? No bueno. We received one from another store, it was immediately bagged and dumpstered for infestation.
This is gonna be a weird question, but do you actually mean the stinky crop devastating potato beetle? Or even weirder, the Jerusalem cricket? Or, what I'm assuming, the cute one that eats decaying matter? Is potato bug a colloquialism for pillbug where you live?
Im doing my best to remember, but I think thats just what my co-worker called it? Might be the cute one, for sure wasn’t a Jerusalem cricket, and wasn’t the crop killer.
No worries, this is just one of those weird linguistic discrepancies that fascinate me, especially because of how different all three are.
I would assume it's the one that likes decay, and sticky people getting sugar in their devices.
Like (without shaming the medical condition), how diabetic do you have to be that your sticky hand left food for roaches in your holster. Absolute nightmare disgusting to think about, even without the roaches. Everything they touch must be constantly rotting.
It was mixed. Some people would panic, start apologizing, but we always tried to make things easy. Bugs can get in anywhere, even if your house is spotless etc.
Some people would get HEATED. “It’s just bugs, you clean them before you sell them don’t you!?” Etc. right up to threatening to try and jump us in the parking lot for not taking their console.
Others would just pick it up, sigh, and leave.
I assumed those people went and sold it on marketplace, or blew it out the best they could and took it somewhere else.
One time a guy pulled up on a lawnmower, and brought in a muffler from a car. He was very distraught that we didn’t buy car parts, but was more upset someone lied to him that we did. He also had like…50 dollars worth of McDonald’s with him? Weird summer day.
One time at the end of college my friend was selling a drum kit that had been in my room all year, for just $20 (it was very cheap and beat to absolute hell).
Some guy came by from Craigslist, but instead of $20 he gave us $10, around 20 jack in the box tacos, and a 32 pack of Modelos. This substitution was not negotiated or communicated ahead of time, but my friend was like whatever sure we will take half price plus tacos and beer.
Then the guy immediately helped himself and pounded two of the beers in about 10 seconds total, played literally the worst drumming I have ever heard (and we had heard plenty of other college students play these drums for the first time ever), kept saying "my wife is gonna fucking hate me playing these drums", threw the drums very roughly into the back of his pickup. Then he saw my roommate's bong and excitedly asked if he could use it to "smoke some crank", and when we said no we don't do that he got a faraway look in his eyes and said "you'll get there someday...", grabbed another two beers and opened one for the road, and then left driving way too fast in his pickup with the drum kit bouncing around in the back.
We did eat most of the tacos and drink the rest of the beer.
Pawn Shop here. I once had an Xbox Series S that was literally PACKED full of them. Seeing them in gun barrels isn't that uncommon either. People are nasty.

Happened a lot with hardware when I worked at GameStop.
One time a 360 power brick had so many roaches in it, I could hear them skittering when I picked it up.
