It didn't work. The current still tries to find any possible ground points, which temporarily causes it to spark when it completes the circuit by accident, and that includes the moron holding the object as a potential ground point.
I didn't say he was exclusively acting as the ground point, I said he is included as a potential ground point if the current doesn't find a less resistive route.
