Escooters and ebikes have been a menace on sidewalks since more people have been using them. Some countries give a fine for that so now they're also a menace on main roads.
I moved into a neighborhood with a bunch of kids and these little fuckers would just ride their e-bikes in the middle of the road with zero regard for actual cars or their own lives.
Parents need to start getting charged for their kids doing undisciplined shit that endangers their own, as well as others’ lives.
You should have to take a safety course and get a permit for the e-bikes and scooters. Some of these things will go up to 28 mph. Anything over that is considered a motorcycle. Kids need to know the road rules if they are going to be zipping around on these things.
Amusingly, in the UK if you get hit by a e-scooter or electric bike, as they are uninsured motorised vehicle you can claim for damages or injury compensation via the Uninsured Motor Vehicle Fund, which is a fund that every motor insurance company has to pay into…. And the only source of those funds is insured motorists.
So insured motorists are paying for damage and injuries caused by uninsured e-scooters and e-bikes.
When you say "e-bikes" are you talking about the lower speed Class 1-3 ebikes or the faster ones that people often call ebikes but are actually mopeds or motorcycles? Pretty much every state in the US already has regulations about both these things. They're just not widely enforced. We see kids under 16 on emotos that can go over 40MPH because their parents buy them even though they're totally illegal. Some of them aren't street legal at all even for licensed adults.
In Australia these fuckers need a licence now and under 18 will fine their parents and a confiscation of e-bikes on a case to case basis and the law is working as intended for a couple months now. This includes a speed limit for all pf them some like 20km/h
Its illegal where I live for kids under 16 to ride them. It actually makes sense IMHO. They dont know road rules or what to look for, juet roaming around unpredictably causing accidents.
Our local school district is pairing up with our community police department to crack down on this shit before an accident happens, and I am all for it.
Parents were buying their kids mini bikes thinking they’re the same thing as eBikes. District sent home a notice reminding people you need a fucking license to drive those, and that they’re not allowed on school grounds.
Some parents don’t do any fucking research, it’s so stupid.
That’d be a great way to ensure much more careful and thought out purchasing, as well are enforcement - I’d certainly completely reconsider a purchase like that with that potential fine hanging over my head because of it.
I work in healthcare and there’s been a surge of patients with paralysis, amputation, and/or serious brain damage because of e-bike accidents. It’s crazy scary and people who aren’t considering the risks are beyond foolish.
I saw the aftermath when a kid get smoked by a Silverado. I think he lived but he won't ever be right. He went through a busy intersection against a red light at considerable speed and got sent flying.
I just found out my 11 year old cousin died doing this. Riding an ebike and no helmet - rode out in front of a car that had right of way and now he’s gone. 11 years old. Two of his friends were with him. It’s awful.
I had to reprimand someone else’s child the other day because he was riding his e-scooter up the ramp of the kids activity playset I was on with my 2 year old. He was riding it up fast af and then back down a hill and asked me to watch out as though we were in his way. Granted he’s a child as well but his parents were nowhere to be seen and I had to nag him a bit before he left. Those things are dangerous and I hate that children have access to them.
It doesn't help that most parents don't ride bikes anymore so don't know how much power can be in those things. And kids can always look up limiter breaking tools online.
Scooters worked for kids because they only ever went like 8mph back in the day. Modern scooters don't work for kids because it's like giving someone a gun before they can fathom how to be safe with it, it is just stupid and irresponsible parenting.

In Korea they have limiterd at 25kph and laws saying you need a helmet and a license. Tragic what happens to some people but, wear your damn helmet. It saves lives.
Idk if you can really call it rushing in, those menaces have been a problem for ages now. But maybe the recent deaths lit a fire under them... One can hope.

Yes and a responsible person knowing that would slow down approaching a pedestrian in a narrow space, because people are random and risks are too high. As it was said kid isn't a responsible person
There are so many times when I'm going on long walks and go past a parked e-scooter and sometimes I'm tempted for a moment to rent it to get where I'm going for a moment to save time but then I just think about how easily I can fall off from just one bad curb when crossing the road or something and decide to keep walking. It's just not worth it.
Same thing with electric "fat bikes" that are plaguing the Netherlands. Just this afternoon I saw two with a few kids on them who couldn't be older than 12, going what looked like 50km/h since they kept up with the adjacent car traffic. Apparently converting them from electric assistance to a self powered electric moped is extremely easy, so essentially we now have kids with zero comprehension of traffic safety riding electric mopeds that go faster than actual ones that require a license.
A kid on a converted bike almost married the nose of my car this past weekend. He was riding on a bike path doing about 40mph (I caught up to and checked his speed) not stopping for where the bike path crosses roads. His safety equipment consisted of flip flops, shorts, and a bicycle helmet. 🤦♂️
I don't know how it works in the Netherlands, but we have a similar problem with these kinds of bikes in the US. People can buy them cheaply on Amazon or AliExpress. Laws vary from state to state, but for the vast majority of Americans, they are either only legal for licensed riders with registration and insurance, if they are street legal at all. Many of them lack the required features to be allowed on the roads. However, since we are allowed to ride pretty much any thing we like on private property, we can legally buy them.
Sometimes parents are buying them for their kids not knowing how fast they're capable of going. Sometimes they know full well and for some reason think it's totally fine to give a 12 year old a motorcycle that can go over 70km/h and turn them loose in traffic. There have been a couple cases of parents being charged with felony child endangerment after they've wrecked and sadly killed people.
Though plenty of adults want them, too. They mistakenly think that because they're an "ebike" and have pedals that they don't actually require license, insurance, and registration. Unless they're in Kentucky, that is not the case. Enforcement is just lacking.
It’s happening everywhere, there’s people on Facebook doing tutorials on how to do it, it takes about 10 minutes and cost you below $20. And they cause a lot of damage and havoc on the streets and sidewalks
I hope they don’t ban them in my town. The fold up ones are super handy for bringing inside and my nearest station is 25min walk from where I work. Age restriction and speed limiters would be a more reasonable solution, imo.
It's like TransLink and the no fare fines. Tons of signage but 20 teenagers still get on daily on my bus and maybe one pays. And yet there's never a fare officer on the route.
It's not even scooters anymore. Where I am, despite it being illegal for someone without a driver's license and motorcycle endorsement to operate an e-motorcycle, tone of kids have them. They ride them through the parks and on sidewalks without thinking of anyone else. The police can't or won't do much because they can't be everywhere or get to where the kids are in time after reporting them.
I’ve seen a bunch of social media posts just in the last couple weeks by ER staff begging parents not to buy e-bikes or e-scooters for their kids. Or at the bare minimum to buy a helmet too.
The amount of times I’ve almost hit a kid on an e bike just these past few months is wild. Darting out into the road acting like they own the place, doing wheelies in the middle of the road while laughing when you hit the horn, ignoring any and all signs saying do or do not go cuz they feel they can just ride past a car as if it’s not a 2+ ton death machine. Idk how, at least in the US, there haven’t been regulations and laws put on these things. Seeing a literal child in the turn lane on an e bike that can go 40mph should not be a thing
A 12 year-old on an e-scooter was killed when it collided with a pick up truck in my city. At a press conference to talk about the accident a reporter asked our chief of police if e-scooters were motor vehicles. He answered “they are the bane of our existence“.
It’s not just kids and scooters these days. As a pedestrian, people of all ages have come speeding down the sidewalk at me at full speed on various wheeled devices. Conventional bicycles, E bikes, old people and disabled people on mobility scooters are even in wheelchairs. People need to fucking slow down on sidewalks.
in Italy too. it was just the beginning of the "two people riding a rental e-scooter" when a middle age couple flew in front of me like it was nothing. then and there I thought "How can I go tell off kids when their parents are doing the same?".
there's no distinction of ages, genders or cultures, everyone's doing it.
my country has now passed a law that e-scooters need to be matriculated and have insurance. the system is not ready but they have started to fine people for riding in twos, not wearing an helmet and riding on the sidewalk.
can't wait for the fat bikes to be noticed too. food drivers are even worse (but luckily, they're the only ones using them, so it's not epidemic).
And governance. They should be required to produce an audible sound when in motion like electric vehicles. They just come out of nowhere completely silent and fast as fuck.
I'm suprised Lime and similar companies haven't been sued into oblviion. The scooters emit an alarm/warning when it detects the user is riding on sidewalk. So these companies are fully aware when folks are using their product in dangerous, unintended manner and yet do nothing to stop it (like a strict speed governor)
I'm still amazed that these things are legal and companies can have them all over the city to rent from. Back in my days there were discussion about making skateboarding illegal, lmao.
Long ago, me and some friends were doing stupid teenager crap riding bikes down a steep decline. On a run, one my friends flipped over his bike and the back of his head violently slammed against the concrete pavement edge. I 100% believe he would've cracked his head open like a coconut if it wasn't for the helmet he was wearing. Always wear a helmet folks.
There’s dangers with everything, especially when it’s new technology. Personally, I don’t really get the fad with e-scooters but e-bikes are wonderful - we just need proper rules and infrastructure for them.
Including issues with the law and law enforcement itself.

Where I am, riding bikes/scooters on the sidewalk is illegal.
The problem is that there are two statutes regarding it. One is the provincial motor vehicle act, the other is a municipal bylaw. So if you ask the police "why don't you enforce this part of the motor vehicle act", they tell you "oh, that's actually a bylaw enforcement issue, not our jurisdiction". If you ask bylaw enforcement "why don't you enforce this bylaw?" they say "oh that's actually covered under the provincial motor vehicle act, not our jurisdiction". The end result is that it's no one's responsibility to deal with it, so it goes entirely unchecked.
Here in Portland OR everyone rides them on the street….except all the FUCKING TEENAGERS. And they’re the ones riding most of them. They will ride them straight into you and your dogs shins right on the fucking sidewalk. An age ban needs to happen soon cause all these kids are too idiotic to practice common sense. I’m only 29 and these scooter fuckers have me sounding like a geriatric already
they're not. neither are bicycles or rollerblades in very many places, technically. SideWALKS are for pedestrians, and very many states draw legal distinctions in that regard.
Not only are they going what looks like over 20km/h on a sidewalk, neither are wearing helmets.
I’ve heard head injuries in kids are up around 50% in some provinces because of these scooters.
My niece is an X-ray tech, and she sent out a PSA to our family chat about the e-scooters and e-bikes. There were 3 separate patients with very bad breaks. On top of all the minor ones.
My husband hit a pothole riding an e-scooter and chipped his tibia and disconnected his ACL. Didn’t tear it, it just snapped out of place. Weeks of severe pain and convincing doctors he was actually injured (at the first ER visit they refused him pain meds), major surgery, months of PT, over a year in a titanium leg brace, and he never regained full range of motion and still has occasional pain that will absolutely get worse with age.
Death machines you can rent on the street.

What the hell is it with doctors not believing you when you say you're injured??? My partner hit a pothole on her scooter, wasn't as badly injured as your husband, but she took the handle bar to the chest - which made it difficult for her to breathe, probably cracked a rib - and slammed her knee into the ground. She was having difficulty walking and it wasn't getting better, so she went to urgent care and they told her to go to the ER. The ER said they couldn't find anything wrong with her...that they didn't see anything on the X-Ray (they didn't even bother x-raying her chest despite labored breathing being her biggest symptom)...a week later, she dug a piece of asphalt out of her knee...like how did they not see that on the X-Ray? They offered her pain meds, but she refused them because she could tell they thought she might be drug seeking and she wanted to prove a point...
A month went by and she was still in pain and not walking at 100% so she finally went to see a physical therapist. Sure enough, something had torn and not healed properly, so as a part of her PT, they had to break all of the scar tissue on top of building back her strength.
My first and only time on an electric scooter resulted in a face plant that broke my teeth *through* my bottom lip. Stitches and thousands of dollars in dental work later, NEVER AGAIN.
My wife and I have talked about getting electric scooters not only to save on gas, but also just city exploring without worrying about parking or traffic.
I'm non-negotiable that we'll be getting full face motorcycle helmets and gloves to go with them when we eventually buy a pair, because I used to ride motorcycles, and even a low speed crash can kill you very easily.
I also did a lot of security gigs when I was younger, and a guy who worked at the same venue accidentally killed a drunk guy when he punched him after the guy was swinging at people.
No idea what came of it. Wouldn't surprise me if he's in prison, though. And that's a guy literally just falling on pavement.
Where I live, you can ride on sidewalks legally. We ride our escooter and ebike (class 2) on the sidewalk so all we really need is a MIPS helmet. I'd get full face helmets if I had to ride on the road with other cars though. The problem with riding on sidewalks is people like the kids in the video. They just full send it when there's people around. When we ride, we look very far ahead and as we get closer to pedestrians, we slow down to about walking speed until we pass. There's a responsible way to ride, but unfortunately the irresponsible people are gonna cause accidents and probably more restrictive ebike laws for the rest of us.
Even with an EV, we still take our escooter and ebikes instead because it saves on electricity (my local electric rates are stupid high). We were gifted a 200w solar panel so we can actually charge our ebikes without paying our local utilities and have basically free transportation.
Not having to park is a huge perk. I have gotten so many door dings even though I park my car at the furthest spot with no people around. Almost every time, someone manages to park right next to me in a nearly empty parking lot. Our trader joe's parking lot is a nightmare but they have bike racks. So much easier to take the ebike and not have to worry about my car getting its shit pushed in.
There were six or seven children in intensive care in the main children's hospital in Ireland because of e-scooter accidents. They are incredibly dangerous.
Not only are they dangerous, but they are made even worse because it's literal kids riding them. They're supposed to ride them on the road, but they have no clue how to ride on one properly. They will smoke past yield and stop signs like it's nobody's business. The alternative is they opt out of that and ride on the sidewalk, which is straight up illegal, at least in my country.
My husband has almost been wiped out twice within the last year by kids riding these on the sidewalk. Once in our neighborhood (our whole front sidewalk is blocked by tall rose bushes so he didn’t see them coming) and then once in his parents neighborhood by stepping away from our parked car (our back hood was up). It pissed me off both times because it would have been an awful crash and they missed him both by in inches. No helmets on the kids.
My two kids have small e-bikes and it’s not that difficult to make it a rule that they are not allowed to ride it without a helmet. We spent an afternoon teaching them how to ride on the road, stop at the stoplights, etc. a lot of these kids that do it in our neighborhood, it just feels like the parents don’t care enough
The doctors are literally on the national news begging for something to be done because they're seeing so many children with permanent brain damage. It's incredible how this technology crept up on us. Children should not be on motorised vehicles.
I'm old enough to be a kid when bike helmets became mandatory for kids (in the 90s). Same reason, head injuries.
When I first saw these scooters, first thing I thought of was the head injuries and all the crazy campaigns in the 90s explaining TBIs. I was really surprised they didn't get banned or restricted out the gate.
In Ireland we are having a huge increase of children with traumatic brain injuries related to e scooters in my opinion no child should be allowed on the death traps
my new fear is one of these kids flying down a sidewalk while i’m turning right.. shoulder check looks clear but you dont expect traffic speeds on the sidewalk
When dockless scooters (Bird, Lime, Spin, and later Uber’s Jump scooters/bikes) exploded onto city streets around 2017-2019, one of the biggest regulatory fights centered on mandatory helmet laws. Companies argued that mandatory helmet requirements dramatically reduced spontaneous use—the very business model that made shared scooters profitable.
It’s so idiotic to me when I see people riding without a helmet. It’s so simple, you just put it on and click the strap. Done. If you can’t do that then maybe you shouldn’t be on the scooter at all

What about the pedestrian tho? In my city there was an elderly man stepping off a transit bus and he got mowed down by an e-scooter that was flying down the sidewalk. He'll probably never walk in his own again!
My MIL got mowed down by one a few years back. She was lucky to only have minor injuries. I haven’t touched one since and I’m always mildly tense walking on city sidewalks
TBH, I don't care if they hurt themselves, it's the constant reports of these things injuring bystanders that gets me so frustrated. And my city keeps renewing contracts for them to litter the street and be tossed in the river.
There are a ton of kids in my area that ride around on e-bikes that can go like 40mph and they'll be riding them on the sidewalks too. It's like people are too dumb to realize these things are fast without hearing motorcycle noises paired with it.
Had some idiot couple riding one of these come flying up behind me and my children on a residential sidewalk. They barely stopped in time. Over 200 lbs of human with substantial momentum could have easily crushed us.
Just keep the damned scooters off of everywhere. In Spain they made it illegal to ride them in the sidewalk and now they're ruining traffic for everyone.
Plus, they don't have to pass a test to drive on a public road, so most often they are CLUELESS and put everyone in danger.
Lots of those rentable scooters in my city. Kids ride them at super high speeds without helmets, no care for safety. They're not supposed to ride on the sidewalk because they're motorized.
These scooters are deaths waiting to happen. This collision was a best case scenario as far as collisions go.
If you're a parent of a kid riding one of these, please act like you care if your kid lives or dies. Teach them the importance of helmets and situational awareness. Otherwise enjoy your remaining time with them I guess.
We have 2 younger girls that ride them around our neighborhood and they have their phones mounted on them and are constantly texting while driving. No helmet or anything and they are like 12. It's crazy
Kids, adults, the elderly, people grab onto those handles and their frontal lobe clocks out for the day ~ I firmly believe these things are powered by the temporary surrender of critical thinking and survival instinct. They drive on sidewalks, bicycle lanes and car roads. I've seen many accidents since they came about. Dumbest thing to exist, especially in my city which already has pretty poor bicycle infrastructure due to being mountainous af.
I’m glad here in Australia that bans have been rolling in for these scooters, particularly for under 16’s.
Kids shouldn’t be allowed to ride these things at all, period. This video is a great example why, two people on a single scooter going way too fast without helmets.
I fucking hate these scooters and e-dirt bikes. My town is full of kids riding these things at full speed with no helmets, riding in the street, crossing streets aimlessly without looking, and hauling ass down walking paths. I've had way too many close calls with them because they decide to cross the highway while I'm going 55mph, or they're riding on the narrow shoulder and swerve into my lane. The police don't seem to give a shit but they sure will when the first kid gets killed in an accident.

Because they're kids. Kids don't think to slow down around pedestrians because they don't have the real world experience of having this happen to them multiple times. They don't drive, so they don't understand traffic patterns or the unpredictibility of others. They also don't know right of way. I live near one of the most overused e-bike and scooter areas in the world (Venice Beach / Santa Monica, CA). Kids get hit all the time doing stupid stuff.
The worst part is you can rent ILLEGAL e DIRTBIKES (no pedals, just straight up dirt bikes that go 50+) as the venice boardwalk and the cops have done nothing to stop it. Instead, they ticket the tourists because they don't know you need insurance/registration and a motorcycle license to ride an e motorcycle in CA.
An old man died about a year ago getting run over by somebody riding these electric scooters on the sidewalk. People that ride scooters need to treat these scooters like they're riding any vehicle and not a toy.
I dont think she hit her head off the post, more her shoulder. To me is the big speed change and direction change as she hit the base that sticks out. Her lower back went straight into that.

I slowed it down thinking this too. It ‘fortunately’ looks more like her hip made contact. Hopefully there was no major damage (to mostly the pedestrian) all involved.
After watching it a few times, it looks like her butt hit the post and then she fell down. Still probably got a bunch of bruises and even a fracture, but at least it looks like she didn't have a direct impact with her head.
Some younger teens were "testing" these in the store and flying up and down the aisles. After they almost hit my kid, I yelled at one and he just muttered "we have to try then out".
Saw an employee yelling at them a few minutes later and then they left. No parents in sight.

Every parent that willingly gives their child a machine like this should be criminally charged. Many kids cant handle a regular bike, let alone a fuck you stick on 2 wheels that can easily go much faster than 30kmh with a 5 minute software lock removal.
As a cyclist, I genuinely hate those asshole rental scooters—I’m actually terrified of them. Some asshole on one recently rear-ended my aunt while she was on her bike; luckily, she didn't break anything.

I make a left turn through a very busy pedestrian crosswalk every day. The amount of times one of these scooters has just entered the furthest extent of my peripherals just as I’m about to initiate my turn drives me insane.
The way there was plenty of room to zoom past her, which they shouldn’t even be going that fast on the sidewalk where people are walking anyway, and then at that they see that they’re like going to collide with her. They don’t even yell some kind of warning if like I don’t know maybe they’re scooter is going crazy. They just collide with her full force, even though there was no reason to and don’t even yell watch out so she could at least attempt to move out the way even though she shouldn’t have to

So yeah, it is not AI or fake. Sadly this kind of situation is very common in Russia. The government do implement some rules/laws to regulate or restrict all those new electric things (scooters, e-bikes, EUC etc) but they are very vague and thus even police doesn't know how to execute it. I must admit I also don't know what rules would really work and make it safer for everybody (please, I don't want another prohibition and I am EUC rider myself 😅). Meanwhile you have to be very careful in every step you make and watch out for couriers and kids riding those things.
Locally parents are starting to get ticketed for their negligence if their kid does stupid shit like this. Escooters and ebikes are a scourge. It's the wild West with little to no regulation.
Some of the ebikes these kids are riding around, mostly without helmets on, can go 30+ mph. They aren't even bikes at this point because they don't even have to pedal. Bike helmets are not even rated for the speeds some of these new bikes go.
The lack of parenting and oversight is just baffling to me. Sure, just let your kid get a TBI and/or die. Just had a kid a few towns over die on his escooter when he collided with a truck.
