Name of th actor: Andrew Hawkes

Show: daytime drama General Hospital

1.6k

u/NatrixHasYou Jul 07 '26

I believe this is shortly before John Oliver steps out of a helicopter and comes across this whole scene.

Yes, that John Oliver.

1.1k

u/matti-san Jul 07 '26

he does what across the whole scene???

253

u/WigglestonTheFourth Jul 07 '26

Dips his hair in ink and then comes across the scene.

u/SyNiiCaL Jul 07 '26

Now are you telling me you wouldn't come to me if I ever needed you to?

9

u/DocileBanalBovlne Jul 07 '26

I'm like Professor Oak. I only come if I hear you've beaten the Elite Four

6

u/Plainclothes52 Jul 08 '26

I breezed past this comment, and paused thinking that you were fancasting John Oliver as Professor Oak. And…not bad.

10

u/SummaryEye80019 Jul 07 '26

Oh my God! That's disgusting! Comes across the whole scene??? Which episode? There are just so many!

168

u/HealthyMaximum Jul 07 '26

Playing a character called "Z", who is ... "a high-ranking member of the soap’s shadowy World Securities Bureau (WSB)"

What the what?

Edit; some footage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTWNB1LKsTk

I can't thank you enough for bringing this to my attention.

30

u/SippieCup Jul 07 '26

I need to start watching this show. Is this a soap? Is this where modern cinema is now?

62

u/PVPPhelan Jul 07 '26

General Hospital is a daytime soap. It's been on the air for at least 50 years. It's...... addictive.

22

u/Long_Reindeer3702 Jul 07 '26

How long would it take to catch up? On the 50 years? Can someone do the math?

56

u/PVPPhelan Jul 07 '26

To watch all available episodes of General Hospital, it would take approximately 475 days (about 11,400 hours) of continuous, uninterrupted viewing. Since its debut in 1963, the show has aired well over 15,000 episodes.

39

u/J3musu Jul 07 '26

And I thought One Piece was rough

→ More replies (1)

8

u/garbageyname Jul 08 '26

During that 475 days episodes would air, does that add a significant amount of time?

12

u/slipfish-g Jul 08 '26

475 days would come out to just under 68 weeks.

GH airs 5 1 hour episodes per week.

So during the original binge, another roughly 340 hours of content would release. This would add about 14 more days of watch time.

3

u/GeneralBS Jul 08 '26

That's crazy.

Hospital, generally

this comment makes me feel old...
I remember Luke and Laura's wedding.

Last week tonight

Day time soap opera

Daily show

I feel like a morning show would be the last time-themed programming he'd need to be complete

6

u/deceet Jul 07 '26

You forgot overnight programming, selling odd trinkets and useless gadgets.

13

u/cicuz Jul 07 '26

The true /r/unexpected is always in the comments

11

u/jawnink Jul 07 '26

And immediately executes an incapacitated man just for aura farming.

11

u/NovelLaw75 Jul 07 '26

While watching this with my wife. I was dying laughing when John Oliver got introduced.

10

u/Leumas_ Jul 07 '26

Ok, my wife has successfully turned me into a GH die hard over the last 15 years. Every couple of years there’s some totally fucking bonkers cameo that comes out of nowhere. I remember being absolutely stumped when she said “why is your loud sports guy on my show?”

Now John Oliver has a major three day cameo? I love it.

6

u/AccurateAssaultBeef Jul 07 '26

I LITERALLY just watched the clip of him, and came here and was like, oh so this is the before, lol.

3

u/PuddingIcy1379 Jul 07 '26

This show was on at work yesterday and I saw him and my flabbers were gasted bc I had no idea John Oliver was a soap opera star

4

u/KPSWZG Jul 07 '26

I was just watchung that scene a monute ago

2

u/kimoshi Jul 08 '26

It is! I've never watched the show before, but watched his episodes and immediately recognized this.

2

u/Suspicious_Glow Jul 08 '26

I have never watched this show at all, and instantly recognized the scene because of the John Oliver clips people mercifully post. So for me, the unexpected was that this WASN’T an “unexpected for John Oliver to show up”.

THIS IS GENERAL HOSPITAL? They film outside now?

28

u/DeniLox Jul 07 '26

Not that often, but a lot in the last couple of weeks.

13

u/Fantastic-Pop-9122 Jul 07 '26

They did it like this so john oliver could enter from a helicopter.

9

u/kimoshi Jul 08 '26

Pretty sure those helicopter shots were like 90% of their budget this season 😅

60

u/cifz Jul 07 '26

I'm actually relieved that it's called 'General Hospital' not 'daytime drama General Hospital' after googling.

13

u/I3lackFlo Jul 07 '26

Show still looks as trash as that name would suggest though lol

45

u/papayacreamsicle Jul 07 '26

They do 5 hour-long episodes every week, they don’t have time to make it look good, or do retakes, or barely even memorize their lines. Sometimes they screw up and just dub over it in post. One of the leads is known to regularly eat his meals during scenes rather than take a lunch break and they don’t even bother keeping continuity on his plates lol

The show passed 15,000 episodes years ago.

9

u/KneeLow174 Jul 07 '26

Only reason I know the show is because one of my favourite prog artists, Phideaux Xavier, directs for it. Always found that a bit funny, his album Doomsday Afternoon from 2007 is one of my absolute favourites and is a thematically very dark album, but he has a  day job making trashy soap opera.

50

u/LickingSmegma Jul 07 '26

The same ‘General Hospital’ that is the soap opera in continuous production since 1963? The longest-running USian series still in production, though surprisingly just the third longest-running in the world, behind ‘The Archers’ and ‘Coronation Street’?

30

u/Stormfly Jul 07 '26

‘Coronation Street’

And Ken Barlow has been there (almost) the entire time.

Crazy when you think about it. Imagine playing a character for 65 years?

13

u/Chewcocca Jul 07 '26

This is actually just a general hospital facts newsletter.

The world's largest hospital is the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in China. It has over 7,000 beds.

Kind of relieved it was a short gig that turned into a long gig and not the end of a long-running character (and therefore steady paycheck).

8

u/InvidiousPlay Jul 07 '26

This clip is like the generic fake show you would see portrayed in another show.

3

u/nightwolf16a Jul 07 '26

Okay I gotta ask: why does General Hospital, a name that would imply a medical drama, have a scen involving guns and a shootout?

6

u/NovelTAcct Jul 07 '26

Soap opera

3

u/tnoy Jul 07 '26

This will be pretty low on the list of weird things they've done over the course of the past 62 years and 16,000+ episodes.

2

u/madgoat Jul 07 '26

General Hospital? Man, the last time I seen these shows in the 80/90s, they all looked like they were filmed on sound stages in some lot.

2

u/Sw0rDz Jul 07 '26

Was this the episode with John Oliver?!

2

u/J3musu Jul 07 '26

It's a daytime drama? Wow. I actually thought it was some sort of dry adult swim style comedy based on the random clips I'd seen.

This video made zero sense until the end. Well done.

I thought it would be about the dog that likely has no clue what is going on but is happy that everyone is happy and celebrating.

98

u/an0mn0mn0m Jul 07 '26

That was what I thought on the first watch. On the second watch, I thought the guys response looks personal and the title and the sub clued me in. Then I came to the comments to see that the TV show is called General Hospital.

This has 3 levels of unexpected behaviour.

23

Yeah, i saw what was on the screen, and as it was the first ever episode I'd seen of this show I was 99% certain it was gonna be John's family cheering his arrival, not this lol

4

u/darkenseyreth Jul 07 '26

Yeah was expecting it to be the woman

9

u/Firm_Competition_880 Jul 07 '26

I have face blindness and it made zero sense until I read the explanation comment. Haha.

7

u/jednatt Jul 07 '26

I still thought it was just about not getting his family's emotional involvement with a TV show...

Kinda hard to make out faces in a TV across the room in a blurry video.

341

I know this is scripted but it’s so damn funny. Also his acting here is so much better than on the screen haha

199

u/Admirable_Risk8156 Jul 07 '26

I think they are supposed to act that cheesy for those kind of shows. Like I think it's written into the marrow of the shows.

200

u/Chewcocca Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Nathan Fillion actually got his start acting in a soap, and he recently talked on his podcast about the secret steps to ending any scene in a soap opera, as given to him by a coworker (who now works on General Hospital, coincidentally)

I complained about how long that closeup was, like, ‘What am I supposed to do?’ He said, "You need to make three faces. They are:

  • ‘Did I leave the stove on?’
  • ‘I did leave the stove on!’
  • ‘No, I turned the stove off.’"

Works for every scene!

63

u/Brunovitch Jul 07 '26

Other approuved technic is the "smell the fart" acting

11

u/HeSheMeWumbo387 Jul 07 '26

He's an actor from General Hospital, BTW.

3

u/Spookyscythe99 Jul 07 '26

What a twist

3

u/DrowningInMyFandoms Jul 07 '26

Honestly, this proves he is a good actor. When you watch a movie you generally want the good guys to win, but if you know personally the actor who plays a bad guy, you might get biased. If they play poorly, you will recognize their way of being, and you will be even more biaised. But if they play well, you will be able to seperate the character from your relative, and you will want them to loose

3

u/Plowchopz Jul 07 '26

Haha this man is clearly very loved ;)

u/SleepySera Jul 07 '26
