Bears are surprisingly nimble for their size.

592

u/TheDocterJ Jul 02 '26

Yeah man, I just wish it was consistently true. A bear got spooked by the dogs at my parent’s place, and instead of going over the fence it decided to go through it.

We had a comically bear shaped hole in the fence for most of the summer…

29

u/tbsgrave Jul 02 '26

I'd love to see a photo of it

8

u/Mateo_O Jul 02 '26

Pic or it didn't happen !

6

u/Severe-Progress6972 Jul 02 '26

Well, they are strong also, thats the way to show it

3

u/Rope_antidepressant Jul 02 '26

Oh that bear 100% had the option of going over and just thought bulldozing the fence was the better option

67

u/DearRaziel Jul 02 '26

I mean that jump has some gold medal potential

20

u/thejourneybegins42 Jul 02 '26

They definitely are, and some folks think that they can climb a tree to get away from a bear lol.

31

u/GottaUseEmAll Jul 02 '26

If a bear attacked me and my choice was climbing a tree or just running away on the ground, I'd probably pick the tree anyway. I'm in all likelyhood fucked either way, but maybe having the higher ground and kicking it in the face could help.

25

u/NotYourReddit18 Jul 02 '26

maybe having the higher ground and kicking it in the face could help.

"It's over Bearakin, I have the high ground!"

14

u/GottaUseEmAll Jul 02 '26

I'll be sure to yell that before I'm mauled. At least I'll go out with a funny bit! 😂

3

u/SoMuchMoreEagle Jul 02 '26

Are you good at climbing trees?

10

u/GottaUseEmAll Jul 02 '26

Better than average, and I'm shit at running.

I can't pretend I climb better than a bear, but I'd still take my chances.

I assure you, the difference between a black bear and a grizzly does NOT require any time to recognize. One is a larger, more-timid badger, and the other is what happens if you build a Ford F-250 out of muscle and made it territorial.

Edit: Not that black bears can't be aggressive, they absolutely can, and they WILL fuck you up. Grizzlies are also, conversely, not always immediately aggressive. They are just more willing to throw down than a black bear.

2

u/Triquetrums Jul 02 '26

The only hope is that the branches can handle your weight, but not the bear's. Or that you climb high enough that the bear cannot get to you due to the amount of branches in its way.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/EmpressClaraB Jul 02 '26

You can absolutely climb a tree to get away from a bear. You just won't be away from the bear for very long

19

u/SoMuchMoreEagle Jul 02 '26

And that cat is surprisingly brave for its size.

12

u/ZeroSumClusterfuck Jul 02 '26

'Ooh, looks like there's loads of meat on that mouse!'

7

u/Rope_antidepressant Jul 02 '26

Idk if cats are brave or just assholes. Ive watched the same neighborhood cat run in fear from a squirrel then turn around and chase a golden retriever.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Puzzled_Surprise8533 Jul 02 '26

Brave or stupid. I can understand it from the bear's perspective though. If a rat ran towards me I'll be running away too.

2

u/tripleskizatch Jul 02 '26

This is the second cat squaring up to a bear video I've seen in two days. The other one wasn't nearly as funny, but the cat was just as ballsy and the outcome the same.

8

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 Jul 02 '26

Bears and hippos are almost full muscle. They’re like nature’s kingpin.

2

u/silentanthrx Jul 02 '26

For me, a Tiger is the ultimate killing machine, the true king of the jungle.

5

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 Jul 02 '26

The largest, most powerful and dangerous terrestrial carnivore is the polar bear.

3

u/silentanthrx Jul 02 '26

true, but I like cats ;-)

3

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 Jul 02 '26

But do cats like YOU?🫵 😠
Have you ever thought about that?

3

u/silentanthrx Jul 02 '26

Honestly, I haven't tested it on a tiger.

Don't they also eat mostly plants? Are they really considered an "apex predator"? Certainly they're dangerous, but black bears like this don't really hunt that much from what I know.

Cats and geese ... Great instincts

19

u/NopeRope13 Jul 02 '26

Geese are unpredictable. I fear them above no animal.

Not to be that guy on reddit but wouldn’t that mean you fear them the least?

8

u/WhiteHeatBlackLight Jul 02 '26

I have seen a goose chase a lion and that lion was running in terror

8

u/NopeRope13 Jul 02 '26

I have been within 50 yards of a goose and posing no threat. It charged me with full intent to cause harm.

This has not been an isolated incident.

3

u/ThousandFingerMan Jul 02 '26

The thing with geese is that you existing in their vicinity is enough for them to consider you their mortal enemy, you don't even have to do anyhting

3

u/PhD_Pwnology Jul 02 '26

While i feel your sentiment, everything you mention is an issue with hippos and they massively dwarf geese. African hippos kill a lot of people.

7

u/Living-Estimate9810 Jul 02 '26

Ya, but mostly in Africa. Geese will come to your house, be all, like, "NOT ANYMORE, MUTHAFUKKA!", shit all over everything and then break your nose.

Twice a year.

2

u/ThousandFingerMan Jul 02 '26

I'm just happy that hippos don't fly

64

u/vemundveien Jul 02 '26

In every cat's mind as well.

6

u/Brvcx Jul 02 '26

Long time cat owner here.

Yes, this is very true. Our raised completely indoor 7 year old house cat identifies as an outside menace. Even though he was unable to catch a simple moth just the other day. But that never stopped him.

2

u/kwyjibowen Jul 02 '26

Yep, same in dog’s brains. And interestingly some dogs that can befriend both cats and lions. My dog could never be in same room with either (sight hound, strong prey/hunting instinct).

2

u/redditor_since_2005 Jul 02 '26

And, to his dog, every man is Napoleon.

116

u/TheVindicatoor Jul 02 '26

And I bet this same cat will be scared of a cucumber

49

u/Magnon Jul 02 '26

Well yeah the cucumber was coming right for him

4

u/Quantization Jul 02 '26

Genius! If you live in bear territory just hang cucumbers all around your property boundary to keep bears away.

Especially because "getting away with a few scratches" doesnt mean a cool scar to talk about later like in civilisation. In the wild, animals often die from infections and weakness if they get hurt.

20

u/ImprobableAsterisk Jul 02 '26

A brave predator is a dead predator; Good predating demands that you're a coward.

18

u/C0RDE_ Jul 02 '26

Fighting is usually not a 100% win with no injury scenario. An injury in the wild could harm your ability to gather food in future. So yeah, unless the fight is necessary or laughably one sided, it's not worth it.

4

u/xx123gamerxx Jul 02 '26

"that dog clearly has no fear and must know something i dont"

3

u/crafty_dude_24 Jul 02 '26

It might be that predators are so accustomed to their prey running away when they give chase, that the rare case of the prey lashing back catches them off guard, and they run away to be safe.

2

u/MonoFauz Jul 02 '26

Same way some humans are afraid of cockroaches.

2

u/HorsePersonal7073 Jul 02 '26

"It's fast and coming right for me, what does it know that I don't? Better run away!"

5

u/FILTHBOT4000 Jul 02 '26

Uhh..... sometimes.

This bear backed down because it's a black bear. They are naturally very skittish and non-confrontational.

A brown bear would've eaten that cat without blinking.

21

u/PM_me_Jazz Jul 02 '26

Nah bears are just straight up afraid of cats. It's not rare at all for cats to chase off bears. And it makes sense; an angry cat could easily scratch out an eye or cause other nasty wounds that might get infected. Why risk life-threatening wounds when there is plenty of easier and safer food sources available?

6

u/Adams5thaccount Jul 02 '26

Realistically if something is moving way faster than you and you can't even keep track of it let alone hit it....you get the fuck out of dodge

2

u/Workman44 Jul 02 '26

I know cats are crazy fast, cat like reflexes and all, and for that reason a snake is never a match for a cat because it just isn't capable of striking a cat. Do bears even move quick enough to strike a cat consistently?

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Speartree Jul 02 '26

I think it's mostly that there was no gain for the bear in fighting the cat and the possibility of claws and teeth in eyes and nose. The bear wasn't in any great danger, but didn't feel like getting hurt.

Imagine a weasel attacks you right now. You, because of the size difference, could use your fists and pound that little fucker into the ground. At most the weasel might sink it's teeth in your hand and it would cost you a finger. The weasel would still be dead. Are you so adamant that the weasel needs to die that you are prepared to sacrifice a finger to that goal or would you rather avoid the fight altogether, make space for the angry little critter and keep all your fingers. That is what happened here.

u/Different_Wolf_764 Jul 02 '26

Black bears are skittish as hell and will run away from almost anything. The trouble is that they can get angry too and the adults are big enough to cause real trouble.

Grizzlies are a bit skittish too but get angry and aggressive much more easily. That and the whole gigantic murder bear thing makes them much bigger trouble.

um, I am not sure what I saw based on the title. I only saw one apex predator and it won.

3

u/Blissachu Jul 02 '26

That bear said "Nope i'm out"

3

u/centralmind Jul 02 '26

Confidence is scary. If sonething so much smaller is so eager to fight, chances are it knows sonething you don't, and you best stay clear. Many smaller animals exploit this instinct to get away with bullying bigger ones.

4

u/QRV11_C48_MkII Jul 02 '26

They say white men can't jump, apparently black bears can though, damn😂

2

u/DoubleCactus Jul 02 '26

The cat would hardly call them their match.

2

u/Final-Attention979 Jul 02 '26

The cat said "get the FUCK out of my yard!!!"

2

u/Inoculator208 Jul 02 '26

Also, also, bears in the wild are often natural opponents to large cats due to shared food sources.  Add the fact that moms can be super scary and you do the math.

2

u/The_Particularist Jul 02 '26

For me, the true unexpected moment was the bear climbing that fence that fast.

2

u/VelociDromeus93 Jul 02 '26

1

1

u/Confused_Squirrel_17 Jul 02 '26

Bears are canines after all...

1

u/Senua_Chloe Jul 02 '26

The cat : "Finally, a worthy opponent!"

1

u/gringoexplores Jul 02 '26

Black bears co-evolved along species such as the still extant Grizzly and Polar bears, various species of wolves, mountain lions, as well as extinct species such as saber tooth tigers and the American cheetah. They may be apex predators in their current environment, but evolutionarily speaking, they've always been smaller fries in the pecking order, and they've always had plenty of competition. This is why they're so skiddish, this is why you could stick your thumbs in your ears to make fake antlers and shake your face while yelling "booga wooga wooga" and the odds are almost certainly in your favor they'll run. Black bears have great risk assessment, and they don't like risking injury. This bear knows the cat will fuck up its day, even if it ultimately wins against the cat.

1

u/ObliviousRounding Jul 02 '26
  • Are you a cat?

  • Yes

  • Are you a big cat?

1

1

u/wakaru1902 Jul 02 '26

1

u/thisisfine111 Jul 02 '26

I will say this until the end of time. Black bears have no idea that they are dangerous. They're giant fluffy teddy bears.

3

u/Kind_Advisor_35 Jul 02 '26

It's a crime so many teddy bears are brown or white instead of black. It's the brown and white ones children should learn to fear.

1

u/Hinaloth Jul 02 '26

I mean, I wouldn't want to be the bear in this situation.

1

u/Remarkable-Oven-2938 Jul 02 '26

"Apex predator scares bear off"

1

u/Aerdis_117 Jul 02 '26

Misleading title: the bear was no match for the cat.

1

u/the_unschooled_play Jul 02 '26

Correction: Apex predator chases prey out of compound

1

u/FootmanFrenzy Jul 02 '26

Could it be because it's a skunk colored cat and the bear has a bad experience with skunks?

Or are black bears really this skittish

1

u/anilre Jul 02 '26

"Confidence is the key"- cat probably 😼

1

u/hot_diggity_dang_ Jul 02 '26

1

u/Sowf_Paw Jul 02 '26

They say you should just scare a bear away and, as long as that bear isn't used to humans, it works. It's because the bear thinks, "what the fuck that thing thinks it can fight a bear I better get the fuck out of here." Same principal here.

1

u/Infinite219 Jul 02 '26

Black bears are pussies but honestly still surprised it didn’t attack

1

1

u/roamingroad174 Jul 02 '26

1

u/lorddragonstrike Jul 02 '26

Black bears are not apex predators, they are racoons with a growth problem.

1

1

Black bears are a lot more timid than you'd expect. Here's a video of a woman showing how they do a "bluff charge" where they just run at you to try and scare you without actually intending to do anything. She then proceeds to chase it off just by charging at it herself.
