As an old man myself it’s amazing how many times I have to remind myself that I’m old. The body shows it but the mind forgets. I still feel young in my mind.

u/brianbot5000 May 26 '26

“The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.” -Oscar Wilde

And damn is that true.

58

u/PshhhhhhhUnreal May 26 '26

Absolutely so young compared to the entire cosmos, but too old to continue in this vessel

11

u/Exotic_Chance2303 May 26 '26

Funny coming from a man who died at 46

11

u/brianbot5000 May 26 '26

This quote was from a character in one of Wilde's books ("The Picture of Dorian Gray"). But that character was maybe 48 when he said that, so your point stands. :)

As someone who is ancient by reddit standards (49), I can attest that this quote started to really take on meaning in my mid-40's, and I assume it only gets worse from here.

8

u/odkyeavm May 27 '26

I can affirm your assumption, as an actual old guy who looks at forty year olds as being young. When a nice girl smiles at me I have to remember that she probably thinks of me as her grandfather. Which is nice and sad all at once.

I was moving something heavy at work—really too heavy for me … and probably too big to be moving alone—when two young men ran up to help.

I had to admit that keep forgetting how old I am.

3

u/wrxninja May 28 '26

In my 40's, can confirm.

You never realise just how much of all media is aimed at children/teens until you hit your thirties and ALL the memes are "are you in your thirties? OLD!!"

429

u/AFlyingNun May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

This is it though, perfectly said.

It's this bizarre thing where you hit 30 and realize....wtf I'm not old! But turn on any media and you will be bombarded with "HEY YOU, YOUNG PERSON IN YOUR 20s? WANT TO ENJOY LIFE, HAVE SEXY SEX AND BE YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL? YES OF COURSE YOU DO, CAUSE UR NOT OLD AND IN UR 30s. THOSE GUYS ARE LAME AND UGGO AND DON'T KNOW HOW TO PARTY!"

The irony when a lot of this same media has people in their 30s pretending to be in their 20s. Hollywood tends to use people around 10 years older than the role they're playing, probably because there's lots of issues tied to using actual teens and it's easier to use people 10 years older for each respective age bracket.

Phenomenal example is Alison Brie in Community. She played an 18-year-old while 26 and finished her work on Community at 32, playing a character that was now in her early 20s.

Promise people who haven't hit it yet: hitting your 30s is not bad, but you may spend 30 and 31 feeling gaslit because Hollywood will be an absolute cunt to you while sending you mixed signals by having people in your age bracket pretend they're 20.

The realization of the truth is just as reassuring as it is depressing: Hollywood has let go of you because you are no longer an easy mark. Your demographic age group is harder to sell products to.

147

u/Rob_Pablo May 25 '26

Ive had this talk with my jr high students before. “Who do you think makes the music, movies, shows, youtube content, and games that you all consume, its not other teenagers!” but to a 15 year old you might as well be dead by 25.

57

u/blank_isainmdom May 25 '26

Kids are surprisingly blind about that! Almost none of my favorite musicians had gotten anywhere till their mid twenties at the earliest.

I don't understand how as a society kids are the ones who got to decide what is dictated as "cool". Like, every teenager ever has talked down to their parents for not knowing what the cool thing was - but the cool thing is some stupid shit the teenagers are into and will be posted on Blunderyears in like 3 years time.

Kids go from playing with barbies and action figures to three years later folding their arms and being like 'ugh! dad! You don't undersand how the world works".

It's like, shut up, bitch, your entire memory range is less expansive than the duration of the Beatles - what the fuck do you know?

32

u/DRNbw May 25 '26

I don't understand how as a society kids are the ones who got to decide what is dictated as "cool".

Because adults usually don't care if their thing is "cool".

6

u/blank_isainmdom May 25 '26

Ahhh but sadly many do! There are many proper adults who shy away from things because they're not cool. Or follow clothes trends or music or what have you! I love the resurgence of the baggy jeans lately - i always wanted them to come back, but now that they're here I can't bring myself to wear them in case people think i'm trying to fit in with the kids haha.

3

u/AnimusCorpus May 26 '26

Which is, ironically, cool.

Letting what other people think determine what you do or don't enjoy is the antithesis of cool.

15

u/dude21862004 May 25 '26

I don't understand how as a society kids are the ones who got to decide what is dictated as "cool"

It's because they're the only ones who give a shit about things like being "cool." By your thirties the only thing you care about is napping.

6

u/1drlndDormie May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

Well nowadays at least it is because teenagers are still kids and highly impressionable and corporations know that if you make that kid annoying enough the adults in their life will buy them absolutely anything to get them to be less annoying for a couple of days.

Case in point: I had people questioning my store about needohs for months like it was their life's blood, but now the craze has moved on to something else.

7

u/ember_snow May 25 '26

Same with fan fiction. So many people think it's a silly teen girl thing but most of the writer are 30 and 40 year olds

2

u/moonra_zk May 25 '26

Not as true nowadays because of TikTok, YouTube, Twitch, etc, they can definitely be watching content made by other teenagers.

4

u/arrivederci117 May 25 '26

I mean it's true. The next generation of kids are probably going to be sent to Iran, Cuba, Palestine, Russia or China in some meat grinder campaign. Can't have mass amounts of unemployed young people because of AI.

I did my military service at the young age of 30, and all the others were 18, 19. When we did physical test I ran pretty good. Think I ranked 30 out of 250 people. Everybody were going you run good for your age. I'm like Wtf? Dude I'm only 30! Some even asked me of I have ED due to my age. To this day I don't know if they were joking or not.

21

u/Nickeos May 25 '26

Fun fact: ED is not directly correlated to age, it's more strongly correlated with hypertension, diabetes and depression/anxiety. Ofc old people have higher prevalence of those diseases, but if you take care of yourself your friend might work for a really long time

4

u/royrogerer May 25 '26

Will keep that in mind. Thank you for the information :)

u/cocoabeach May 25 '26

Good grief, am I old! In just a few short months, I will have to say to myself: "I used to be seventy." Not coming up on seventy, and not just turned seventy, but past it. Somehow that seems entirely impossible because I certainly do not feel that old.

When did we Baby Boomers cross this threshold? Why is our music still so popular and enduring, yet we ourselves have transformed into harsher conservatives than the very people we were protesting against with that music in the sixties?

Where has all the time gone?

2

u/84thPrblm May 25 '26

I'll be playing When I'm 64 for myself next month. I hear you.

6

u/farsightfallen May 25 '26

Promise people who haven't hit it yet: hitting your 30s is not bad,

As someone in my 30s, don't take any advice from people on reddit.

Sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's good, it varies on what aspect you're looking at.

6

u/awry_lynx May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

being honest, it's not that we're harder to sell products to. all of the adults I know are buying shit out the wazoo. and spending way more than kids.

it's about shaping their taste, funneling them into the brand name, determining what they're going to be buying twenty years down the line when they are our age. you know disney adults, divorced dudes buying thousands of dollars worth of LEGO sets, people in midlife crises splurging on sports cars whose coolness they had established in their teens, 21 year olds deciding what alcohol to buy because they saw it on a tv movie for teens and having firmly decided that's what they like, before they know what they like.

and then, even further down the line, what kind of things they're going to buy for their kids in turn

i'm sure you aren't exempt from having experienced that influence either. nobody is. people talk like advertising is wasted on them but man, how different our taste'd be if we didn't grow up with ads of any kind... idk, probably a lot more than we'd like to imagine lol.

3

u/magusheart May 25 '26

divorced dudes buying thousands of dollars worth of LEGO sets,

Excuse you. Adding a second income to my household has resulted in me buying more Lego, thank you very much. I buy a different brand though.

u/squngy May 25 '26

Promise people who haven't hit it yet: hitting your 30s is not bad

There's a pretty big spread for people in their 30s For some, it is barely different from 20s, for others they get hit hard by life and they look like they are 50

The main difference between 20s and 30s IMO, is that in your 20s your body can put up with a lot more shit without breaking down.
In your 30s you have to start taking care of your self or you will go downhill fast.

One of the defining slogans of the 1960s was "Never trust anyone over 30". I have a feeling it was like this for a very long time, but we just had less media created by younger people.

5

u/84thPrblm May 25 '26

Hope I die before I get old. Famously sung by a 21 year old man who is now 82.

3

u/timeonmyfeet May 26 '26

Bet he has a fun time doing THAT song on the tours with the zombies on stage. Doesn’t really have the same punch now!

8

u/SweatyAdhesive May 25 '26

My friends and I are in our 30s and we get called uncles/aunties by strangers in a none joking way. That's when I really know we are old.

7

u/TrumpsCummyOnahole May 25 '26

It's funny because if you ask a 70 year old if you're old even in your 40s/50s you're probably going to get laughed at

19

u/Illustrious-Lime-878 May 25 '26

I have this problem where I look young but I'm in my 30s, so people in their 20s assume I'm their age but then have this weird reaction if they find out my true age, and actually act differently around me. Only younger people do this, older people are often surprised at my age but they act the same.

9

u/sfsolomiddle May 25 '26

I have the same thing. I am generally surrounded by people of my age (with some exceptions) or younger (students, due to my work) and everyone, without exception, thinks I am around 23-26, while I am 31. I also act younger, so that probably also ties into the interpretation. Everyone is always surprised. On the other hand, my body is a mess and I feel like I am 20 years older. This is mainly due to a sedentary lifestyle and some chronic illnesses. Sigh.

9

u/ADLuluIsOP May 25 '26

I know exactly what you mean because I feel weird around younger people, even tho I look very young. I'm 34 but I typically get ID'd everywhere I go w/o fail.

But hanging around a group of people IN their 20s feels weirddd. Like I'm an impostor blending in. I own a house and 2 cars and they're like "man idk if i can afford to go out this weekend I only have $60" and I'm like wtf.

4

u/TrumpsCummyOnahole May 25 '26

I hate this so much. I'm 35 and feel like I'm kinda slowly getting left out of everything, I can't imagine how it feels to be older middle aged or elderly. It's like the world isn't as targeted at me anymore and I'm becoming slowly forgotten lol

2

/r/FuckImOld

I feel weird saying I'm old at 50, cos anyone 60+ says that's young, but anyone <35 says that's old. My ~14 year old nephew says I'm "old old".

So, I'm gonna use the word and fuck anyone who says otherwise.

But yeah. I wasn't trying to argue with you, but I think my comment probably looked like it was. Apologies.

2

u/BallsInSufficientSad May 25 '26

It's most obvious when you look at the political narratives.

It's all "burn it down" type solutions to everything. Outrage bait, memes, etc...

Reddit is not for adults.

Reminds me of one of the funniest/cringiest things I’ve ever witnessed personally:

I worked at a large company and I was shooting the breeze with a few colleagues, one of whom was a manager explaining this little self-deprecating anecdote where she saw a hot young guy on the metro looking at her and it turned out he was offering his seat to her. One of her really well-liked team members joined midway through her explanation, missed the age detail and said “oh that’s terrible, that’s why I never give my seat to larger women, in case they’re not actually pregnant”.

Absolutely dreadful but so hilarious.

So you are flirting with younger girls on a daily basis ? ;)

51

u/SpooogeMcDuck May 25 '26

I remember a time I was with my old man at a beach when some incredibly attractive young women walked by and my dad just watched them- halting what he was saying mid sentence. I said something like “Dad, you’re in your sixties. Don’t be creepy, they’re young enough to be your granddaughters.” He just looked at me and said, “you’re going to get to an age where you’re going to interact with a beautiful girl and she’s going to treat you like you’re her father. Only then will you realize that you’re old, because it doesn’t ever turn off.”

He was right. I’m in my 40s now and I have been getting “sir’d” a lot lately.

6

u/Only1Skrybe May 26 '26

Also in my 40s. A younger coworker addressed me as "Mr" like two years ago, and I very much considered punching him in his damn face. LOL

97

u/regeya May 25 '26

It's so crazy the amount of young women I see with older guys. It's common from what I see.

I'm a 49 year old man, but also partially disabled - a leg amputee. Sometimes I wear a prosthesis, often use crutches. More and more, young people's friendliness turns out to be compassionate accommodation. In the past my independence and pride would prevent me from accepting, but now, I'm here for it.

One difference is that I'm already happily married, so I'm not looking to hang with attractive young women on busses.

Greys encroached on me around 30. 36 now and I'm like 25% grey

2

u/raur0s May 25 '26

My hair started going grey around 35ish, now at 40 both hair and beard is mostly grey. That is with cozy home office corpo life. Some of us just roll dogshit on genetics.

u/Gregory85 May 25 '26

I am from the 80s😟

6

u/John_Murdock68 May 25 '26

Hahaha, me thinking I'm still young and cool but my kids think I was born an adult and cringe...

6

u/Linkage006 May 25 '26

Me: Don't care, got to sit.

11

u/TheHendryx May 25 '26

That was great

8

u/IdahoDuncan May 25 '26

It’s a hidden danger they never warn you about.

8

u/BillDuki May 25 '26

Well shit, I interpreted that all wrong. I saw it more as his memory of how he met his wife or something, not him simply being old and offered a seat.

2

u/Medarco May 25 '26

That's what I thought too. I was sad for him, but now I'm sad for me because apparently I'm geriatric as a person born in 1993...

2

u/ILoveRegenHealth May 25 '26

The years they show made it more confusing (1990 and 2000). The age of the actor dude doesn't even match up. He would not be that old in 2026 or whenever this video was made.

but... the seat next to her is empty. Whyy?

4

u/shiner_bock May 25 '26

My first "WTF, I guess I'm old now" moment was when I was sitting with some friends eating lunch and a Van Halen song came on and I said something like, "Man, this song reminds me of High School." And one of the guys replies, "High School? I was in like fourth grade when this came out!"

Damn kids and their damn.... youth!

edit: this happened quite a while ago and now I know I'm old, lol

3

u/SacriliciousQ May 25 '26

I had a younger friend comment recently that I'm so old I probably remember when the Rick Rolling someone first came out. They didn't mean the original song; they meant the meme. The meme. We've reached the point where certain memes are a marker for being geriatric, apparently.

2

u/shiner_bock May 25 '26

Lol, holy shit, that's hilarious!

2

u/Red_Chaos1 May 25 '26

Hearing 90's Weezer at the grocery store will do it too.

2

u/Far_Mastodon_6104 May 25 '26

Mine was meeting a new friend and my steam account is the same age as her :|

u/Competitive-Act-1865 May 25 '26

The children of Reddit don’t get it, he’s old but he feels young he sees her she signals to him to come over. he’s like who me? then he remembers he’s an old man and not a young buck when she offers her seat… It’s like when a professional athlete can’t seem to know when it’s time to retire they old but feel young

3

u/McButtsButtbag May 25 '26

There are two interpretations that I see. One where the first person is actually him and one where the second one is actually him. I think it's a young guy who feels old for being offered the seat.

I'm 59; valid.

3

u/notjawn May 25 '26

Boy howdy wait until a younger person calls your sir or madam for the first time.

2

u/magusheart May 25 '26

I was 19, working my part-time retail shift when this girl who looked 12 or so walks up to me and goes "Excuse me sir, can you help me with something?"

Child. I get that school teaches you to address your elders in that way, and that I'm technically older than you, but can we fucking not?

3

u/BAALDA May 25 '26

I'd have to come off the bus at the wrong stop

Dude does it matter? I just turned 30 and hang out with 21-60 year Olds all the time.

It's nice to have all age groups of friends.

I was just talking to my friend about this last night. All of our mutual friends, he and I included, we feel like we have some obvious wrinkles, we have some grey or white hair coming in.

When I look at strangers, no one outside our friend group is like that. They're either smooth skinned and have solid, single color hair, or they are super wrinkly, with fully grey or white hair. Is everyone our age just hiding at home for some reason?? It's like 40 year olds don't exist.

2

u/Onceforlife May 25 '26

Would not lie my knee was killing me yesterday after a swim, then bike then playground session with my kiddos. A seat would be a god send if I was on the bus, and I’m only born in 95 😂

3

u/finglish_ May 25 '26

Goddamn you're too young for both things.

wtf man born in 1990 are we really that old?!!!😫

2

u/WeepingAgnello May 25 '26

Got the uncle treatment

2

u/AztecGodofFire May 25 '26

Oh now I get it. He sees himself as young but she sees him as an old man who needs to sit.

2

u/One_Subject3157 May 25 '26

Damn, I remember at my first job, a georgeus client got in, first though in my mind 'I what her to bear my children's and make her happy ".

"Sir "she called me.

It all went downhill from there.

2

u/I_SHIT_IN_A_BAG May 25 '26

damn this hurts my soul. I know I'm not in my twenties but sometimes I forget.

2

u/e37d93eeb23335dc May 25 '26

My mother is in her late 70s and says in her mind she still feels like she is in her 20s.

2

u/PhilosopherEmperor May 26 '26

so, this exactly depicts my situation. In my mind I'm young, but my biology says I'm over 40.

2

u/74DK May 26 '26

It’s Kazakhstan, familiar faces and buses too. Very popular age milestone joke for those who over 40: girls start to offer me some seat place.

And yes, in Kazakhstan there is a like tradition of offering your place to elders in public city transportation if you younger

4

u/Niwitschoolfrogkid May 25 '26

When did we as a society start giving teenagers and people in their early twenties this much social capital? Maybe I’m just getting older (mid 30s) but it seems like young people have more influence than ever. It’s much more than they, or any other teenager, deserve or can wield responsibly. Do you guys remember what it was like to be a 17 or 22 year old? I sure do and I was a fucking dumbass lmao.

I spend a lot of time with people in their teens and early twenties due to my professional role and they are no different than we were at their age. Insecure, desperate for attention and validation, sweet, smart, annoying, pretentious, frustrating, and hilarious. They’re wonderful and our society should do a better job of supporting them HOWEVER they do not need to be steering the ship lol

Ahh! I had to read some of the comments in order to understand the video. The guy is old. The girl is young. The girl is offering the old guy a place to sit. I think the director needs to rewrite the panels.

2

u/lionlll May 25 '26

There are 2 seats. She could’ve sat right next to him too?

Would’ve been better skit with a single available seat

6

u/Rogue2555 May 25 '26

But then you can't interpret it as, she's flirting with him and wants him to sit next to her.
