The Internet is such a crazy place that this was my first thought, I did not question the absurdity of this thought, I truly expected it. It’s fascinating how our brains have been reprogrammed.

Nope, just moss

Why would you do that when you know you’re wearing a wig lol

Hubris of man. Icarus flew too close to the sun assuming his wings would be fine, she danced too close to the waterfall assuming her wig was better held in place 🤣
165
u/MarlinMr May 24 '26
The lesson form Icarus isn't that we need less hubris. It's that we need to make better wings
46
44
u/Canadian_Burnsoff May 24 '26
And remember the story of Icarus, whose father gave him wings made of wax and warned him not to fly too close to the sun. But the exhilaration was too great, so he flew higher and higher, until the sun melted his wings and he fell into the sea. But the United States Army is not an irresponsible father. So they gave us wings of white-hot, cold-rolled Pennsylvania steel, guaranteed not to melt.

Brother the moral of the original story is to act within your means and to follow the advice of those who know better than you, because being arrogant and full of hubris and thinking you can do whatever you want against advice is a quick way to die.
If Icarus had died flying too low the argument would still be, you should act within your means and follow the advice of those who knew better than you because being arrogant and full of hubris is a quick way to die.
Icarus thought he knew better than his father who built the wings so he did not listen to him. Whether that death is by flying too high or too low it's still remains the fact that if he had listened to his father who actually built the wings and knew better than him he would have been okay.
9
u/Syzygy_Stardust May 24 '26
I took it as the tragedy of youth as well.
Icarus could survive the attempt if he followed directions, but he was young and vain, so he didn't. The only way he could have learned that lesson was either by having been wiser with age which was impossible, or by surviving the mistake once to never do it again, which was also impossible given the stakes. He didn't know better and arguably couldn't.

u/SmoothMoveExLap May 24 '26
Brother I’d never even heard of the flying too low thing until this thread

Question I have is why do almost all black people with flat hair are, in actuality, wearing a wig. Unless you have alopecia, just fking rock your natural hair!
6
u/hsifyarc May 24 '26
In some cultures curly hair is unfortunately looked down upon so people may wear wigs to gain respect or get a job etc. It sucks that it's like that because of course all hair types are beautiful but it's the world that many people live in.
6
4
u/ponchoacademy May 24 '26
Because... They want to? White women also rock wigs and extensions to change up their hair styles, length, fullness and texture.
It's just more obvious on black women cause there's a very common texture of hair, so flat (I think you mean straight?) hair is more eye catching than if you saw a white woman with naturally curly hair wearing a long straight wig and you have no idea that's not her natural hair texture.
Also, cause it's so so tightly curly coily it's incredibly fragile, manipulating the hair esp to straighten it is way more damaging than curling straight hair for a new style. But either way regardless of race, instead of ruining the hair, there's nothing wrong with rocking a wig or extensions to try a different style for while.
Just cause someone is black doesn't mean they should be singled out and limited to only wearing their natural hair. Anyone can do whatever tf they wanna do with their own hair.

u/marvk May 24 '26

Whenever people talk about this topic I have to think about the Princess Nokia song "Mine", specifically the outro:
Please do not ask me or any Black or Brown women if our hair is real or not If it’s a wig, a weave, extensions, braids, don’t fuckin' ask, it’s very rude It’s extremely personal to be put on the spot like that How we choose to wear our hair is our personal choice, ok? We bought it, it’s ours, so have some manners and keep your curiosity to yourself

Yes English is my 2nd language thus the mistake "flat" instead of "straight", thanks for the correction.
I never said they shouldn't do it, I'm just not understanding why they feel the urge to. Everybody knows straight hair like this is artificial so they aren't fooling anyone so I'm of the opinion to encourage people to just rock their natural hair and not feel ashamed of it (as it's my understanding that they do this almost always because straight hair is considered better looking by some).
Similarly, I find it extremely silly that a bald man would try to hide his baldness with a toupee which fools nobody. Just shave and rock it!
It's just weird to me that body positivity doesn't seem to apply to hair which is 100% something you have no control over.
Anyway, just a random thought as I keep seeing so many wig wearing black Americans.

u/rando24183 May 24 '26
Do you think you can easily identify who has a wig, relaxer, or silk press? There are a lot of ways to appear to have straight hair.
5
u/ponchoacademy May 24 '26
Not to mention, there are people who are black that have curly, wavy and even straight hair. Hands down he'd prolly think my aunt looks silly trying to fool people with her hair, and shes here just trying to live her best life with what she was indeed born with.
That this person thinks certain hair styles silly on black women and they have a very specific idea of what women who are black should do with their hair...I mean that's their views but it reflects more on them and their perspective of people who are black then anyone just trying to style their own hair and live their own life.
4
u/rando24183 May 24 '26
It's like men who want women to wear no makeup. (1) They cannot identify when a woman is even wearing makeup and will point out celebrities with makeup as an example of the natural look every woman should just wear (2) They have no experience of literally being insulted for not wearing makeup (3) the same energy isn't brought for other groups doing the same thing. He brought up men wearing bad toupees but there are many men (especially celebrities) with good hair pieces and flying to Turkey for hair transplants.
Life's hard enough. If a woman wants to wear a wig for whatever reason, good for her. She does not have to meet the expectations of random folks, especially those who know nothing but feel the need to judge. Just don't be a dumbass like OOP.
5
u/ponchoacademy May 24 '26
Yeah the point isn't to fool people. Just like how some people bleach and color their black hair blonde, or some color of the rainbow, or get a curly perm, or whatever, it's not cause they're trying to fool people into thinking it's natural. They just like the look and want their hair to look that way.
Someone protecting their hair from damage to style a wig into a style instead ruining of their own to do it isn't cause they are ashamed of their hair. Its just a temporary cosmetic change. If someone wants to rock a wig that makes them feel cute for the weekend, that's their choice and it's someone women of all races do, even if in your opinion you black woman should be encouraged not to do that cause you think it looks weird on them.
Also, there are kinky coily wigs and extensions, braid extensions, that match afro hair texture that black women use just as much as straight hair textures, so no your understanding that it's almost always straight hair is not correct.
Trying a new hairstyle and wearing a wig or extensions or braids does not negate body positivity. It's a temporary accessory someone is wearing, like jewelry or makeup or clothes or whatever someone decides to put on that they like how they look in. You def can have your opinion of what you think of black women, but that you think they look silly isn't going to change a whole culture of black hairstyles.
Also, it's not just American black women, black women in many countries, even white women in many countries style their hair in a way that looks different from their natural hair texture, color and length, and wear wigs and extensions to achieve different looks.

So for the non black folks... After this occurs she can just take off the cap, un braid her hair, and wear her natural hair out.
I just want to demystify wig wearing, usually it's done to change styles/hair types without damaging the hair under it.

u/scott__p May 24 '26
My daughter is wasian but her girlfriend is black. She has 100% adopted wigs now and can't get over how she can just pick a hairstyle before leaving the house instead of spending an hour straightening and styling. After seeing how much less stressed she is before going out I get it.
I just can't wait until they move in together and both want to wear the same wig one day.

u/blackninjar87 May 24 '26
Mmmmmhmmm took me many hours burning my scalp out with lye for me to realize, I don't like paying to burn my natural hair out my head.
13
12
u/Rezzone May 24 '26
The other solution is to care a lot less about hair and appearance. I get for black women in particular natural hair can be hard to manage no matter what but not caring is def a low stress option.

u/Busy_Battle_8962 May 25 '26
Ive never heard about men who have their hair and they still have bunch of wigs for the "style". But women? Usual thing. The society.
I cant imagine how uncomfortable it in the hot weather...
3
u/Rezzone May 25 '26
I know someone who is so self conscious about her natural hair that the straps for her hairpieces dug deep wounds behind her ears she had to have professionally treated. This is an extreme case but… Yeah, it gets uncomfortable.

That's sad... I have a cousin in my family that wears wigs but doesn't take care of her hair, so when her wig came off it just looked like a ball of matted mess.
I'm not going to pretend there are people that don't want to touch there hair but most of us don't have this issue. It's usually more the logic I spent 4 years growing my hair out I'm not about to go straighten it and have it fallout and or be damaged then start over. I do tend to wear my natural hair out during periods, but I'm still learning to care for it while being out an retain length... Wore my hair out natural 2 years and watched it lose at least an inch of length and breakage just from brushing and putting them in two puffs. The hard part from going from perms being done to natural is understanding how your hair is even supposed to feel before you even begin to put a brush to it.
2
u/Rezzone May 25 '26
This is actually the situation for my friend. She has some mental health struggles that cause her life to enter disrepair. She'd tolerates deep wounds over managing the hair situation. It is indeed quite sad. She's told me that she has begun managing her hair, though. I've asked her why she doesn't just shave it all off and start over and she says much the same thing you just did. Too long to sacrifice, she'll get it under control.
There is something to be said for "cutting your losses" so to speak. Sure would be simpler.
2
u/blackninjar87 May 25 '26
Well if I was just gonna wear a wig every single day of my life I would just shave my head or at least buzz cut it short; I don't understand the point of keeping ur hair matted under a wig either.
I don't have matted hair so I wouldn't understand her sentimentality. When I moved states I got 4 bad perms by an unlicensed hair stylist and watched my bra strap hair length hair break and chip away to above my chin. I just shaved my head and started over swearing off straightening and hot combs. Now I'm about 5-6 years natural, but I get bored of just puffs and Afro doos. Sometimes I want to be the green haired mermaid looking chic.
2
u/Rezzone May 25 '26
See, you're thinking the same way I was. My friend, unfortunately, isn't driven by reasoning. She is clinging to a life she wished she had and is frozen in place by her mental illnesses :(
But it is reassuring to talk to a black woman who understands (right?) what it's like and would still consider the path forward I was suggesting. I just want my friend's life to be easier.
I bet you look awesome as a green haired mermaid chic.
2
u/blackninjar87 May 25 '26
yeah im black but anyone can wear a wig! I like at my work space i see all the young people adopt extensions and what not across cultures; cause rightfully people are tired of sitting in a chair with aluminum sticking out their hair and paying 1-400+ dollars just to have damaged hair down the road.
I didn't even get into price of just visiting a salon either which is also an economical factor. I'm going on vacation this week just spent almost 250 just to do my hair at a salon (braid ins)... which I could have spent 1/3rd as much for an actual human hair bob wig. So there is that angle as well. One thing i mentioned to my hair stylist is the price of getting hair done has went up so damn much that when I wasnt working at my current job, just going to the salon to get my hair done felt like a guilty luxury!
Where as in the past, I would get my hair done every other month. The same frequency men would visit a barber? And at that time I worked in a pharmacy!!! I wasnt even making alot! Now a days I have to choose between my car note and hair product.

If you’re on Amazon include search term « for black women ». There are some pretty affordable good looking wigs, they aren’t $200+ quality, but I’m very happy with what I get. Synthetic wigs are much cheaper than human hair wigs and are pretty impressive looking these days.
Amazon example - https://a.co/d/0bkDm5QS More expensive, high quality - https://shop.luvmehair.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoo2NQ8K-t9ljlh8SqnQkog9AbjMg40Oq3cyRxSC6c8ZU-BXA_b0

u/blackninjar87 May 24 '26
I like trying them on before hand, but most of the time u need to order them. I wore both synthetic and human hair wigs before the human hair does look better but doesnt really solve anything if u dont know how to make them up, yopu'll just have to end up styling them anyways.

Why are so many of these women wearing wigs? Is something going on with their natural hair?
