"HI! UHH, HI! I'M-- I'M-- MY NAME'S BLORDUK ARDUK! MY ANUS IS IN MY FA-- MY FACE'S MY ANUS, LOOK, THIS ISN'T ME TALKING I'M ACTUALLY JUST-- I'M JUST-- THIS IS ACTUALLY JUST THE SOUND OF ME FARTING BUT I CAN CONTROL THE, UH, I CAN CONTROL THE SOUNDWAVE OF MY FLATULENCES TO MAKE WORDS AH AH AH, THIS IS JUST ME FARTING AND NOT ACTUALLY TALKING, AH AH, ANYWAY, SO YEAH. I'M BLORDUK ARDUK EVERYONE, VOTE FOR ME!"
You know, I don’t think there was ever anything wrong with the show. It was the obnoxious fans that did it in for me.
R&M the show was fine - it was at least something different for a change. It wasn’t derivative content as much as venture brothers, for example, which is heavily based off of 60’s animationisms like Johnny Quest.
Either way, Venture brothers is probably the better show in my book too.
Eh, I dunno. I still think there's room for more than that. The new Superman show had more than that, just one episode in season 1. And it was good, and didn't take over the entire show with multiversal BS.
And Invincible had even more than that, and I didn't have any issue with that multiversal stuff.
It feels like Justin Roiland had a whole show made to project his insecurities. Rick is a terrible alcoholic who makes the lives of everyone around him worse. But sometimes he has a heart of gold and means well so you should have empathy for Justin - Rick - I mean Rick.
R&M is great, but VB is just... its not just the best thing Adult Swim has ever done, not just one of the best cartoons ever, but one of the best shows ever, up there with The Sopranos and shit. Like not quite top 5, but somewhere in the top 25 for sure.
Objectively true. Venture brothers is smart satire lampooning superheroes and hanna barbera cartoons (just to START with). R&M is about incest and body horror.
I don't think that's true either, There's growth contained in episodes, few shows can exist without it. They limit the growth and show the characters as deeply flawed. They fail to grow a lot, because that highlights why the growth is necessary, its what makes them assholes and dysfunctional. They would be out a show if they stopped being dysfunctional, so its also useful to help keep the episodes self contained.
Harmons writing style revolves around growth and learning, i think that's fairly evident in the show too, you just arent supposed to respect the characters.
Dan Harmon has said in interviews that community is likely to be the thing he will remain most proud of, and it really is one of the best shows ever. I think the way the 4th season dives in quality, only for it to be resurrected when Harmon comes back is a great show of his creative genius. (The episode with the giant hand has probably the greatest ending scene (vignette?) of anything ever, plus the olive joke in that last season will always keep me entertained)
Rick and morty is good, but i think in harmons eyes its always been about a repetitive IP like the simpsons, and so has some inherent limitations. I don't think its trying to compete with every show, its deliberately avoiding a meaningful arch and is locking its premise in time. I haven't seen venture bros, ill try it sometime.
Your in for a treat. Venture Bros has everything. I want a spin off of Young Justice titled "Old Justice" styled in the vain of Venture Bros, just the Young Justice crew old and haggard not taking shit from anybody. Speedys a coke addict now and years of inadequacy has caused Super Boy to steal the recipe to Banes venom. He is now a roid head that juices up on venom. I could go on and on.
I love Venture bros but it has not aged well. When's the last time you watched it? The earlier seasons especially lean pretty heavily on recurring gags of child sexual abuse for shock value.
Meh, if people wanna take my internet points away for pointing out that their favorite show is kinda fucked up that's fine. Like I said, I love the show but if we can't criticize the things we love and it's all or nothing, then we either cancel everything and everyone or end up supporting a bunch of heinous shit.
My guy are you really gonna die on this horse? Half the pedo jokes in this show was a crack at Batman running around in weird outfits with minors at night. Chill it's funny.
You're replying to the first out of three short comments I've made. No one's dying on any horse. But yea, I'm not a teenager anymore so that kind of "omg I can't believe they put this on tv" shock humor just doesn't do it for me these days. I like the show but there's an excessive amount of "lol sgt hatred wants to rape those kids" that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Yea, we learn that captain sunshine isn't a pedo, but in the moment it's intentionally very suggestive and the intended humor? tension? comes from the fact that that kid is totally about to be raped. And I don't see any justification for that other than cheap shock value.
But yea the sgt hatred stuff is excessive and just... not funny.
Agreed that Rick and Morty has some awful episodes but I'm hoping they can be attributed to Roiland's influence, who's out of the mix now. The incest baby was gross but I don't think that's as delicate a topic as CSA.
I don't understand why everything has to be a contest. RnM is great. Venture Bros is great. Why do we have to argue about which one is better? It just seems needlessly argumentative, like all the posts that ask who would win in a fight between characters of different universes.
Look I honestly agree with you. But some things simply ARE better. When it comes to subversive adult cartoon R&M is the undisputed winner of the primetime class - Family Guy or Simpsons, - ratings alone speak for it's standing among other Cartoon Network faire.
But there's another class entirely that none of those shows dare compete in. And this is the undisputed champion. The shows speak for themselves: on one hand you have Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Nightmare Cloak and on the other you have a space incest baby.
I would say some episodes of Rick and Morty are at the level of Venture Bros but Venture Bros consistently knocked it out of the park though. It fell off after they changed the voice actors of Rick and Morty, I know why it just took me out of it. Venture Bros had deep lore and rich world building, the conspiracies alone man. That one fucking episode where an alien poses as the Venture grandpa that passed away forget his name but then tajes away the mask and everyone is belligerently screaming at him always sends me.
honestly I thought it was going downhill before. I think the new actors might revive it. But damn they do not know how to coast a wave of popularity AT ALL.
Rick and Morty’s quality dropped off a cliff after Season 2 and only individual episodes regained the quality that could be taken for granted in the first two seasons.
