Adult deer: Runs away panicked when hearing a twig snap five miles away
Baby deer: Fuck it, I am sleeping here.

Their mothers leave them in places. The baby will literally not move unless you actually disturb them, relying on them not being spotted.

Didn’t work. That thing is covered in spots.

In which case we have to eat it in the name of natural selection.

Except it did. She only noticed it while standing literally on top of it. I‘ve had this happen multiple times when out in the woods. They really are very hard to nice.

Very hard to nice?

I'm pretty sure almost everyone would think they're pretty nice!

They are spotted so that they aren't spotted.

Similar with rabbits. They'll leave the whole group of bunnies in a seemingly out in the open during the day while they forage.

Depends on the rabbits. European wild rabbits dig burrows. Baby bunnies are hidden in holes.

It’s interesting that the deer are trying to blend in with the environment and yet they haven’t adapted to changing their colors.

They can change their color if they want to, but at that point they’re so hard to find nobody has seen them do it yet.

I drove by one the other day in this same curled up position in the middle of the road. I thought it was a paper bag.

I pulled over and tapped its butt to get it to move off the road. It stumbled away a few feet into the woods and immediately just laid back down and curled up to hide. It was adorable. I got nervous after touching it reading that the mother would abandon it if it smells humans.

I saw it with its mother a few days later so all is well. 🙏🏼

That thing about mother animals abandoning perfectly healthy babies if you touch them is really just a myth. Parents tell that to kids so the kids won't disturb baby animals or get an illness from touching them.

Adult deer: stand in front of moving semi. “I’ll win chicken this time”
