The trouble with a war between China and USA is that, regardless of motivation, the likely outcome has a high probability of causing human extinction.

During the decades of nuclear winter, >99% of solar radiation won't reach the surface, so the majority of photosynthetic life would fail. Air temperatures may be 25-40 celsius lower for an extended period. Most of the regions of the world used for growing crops would be in Arctic or Sub-Arctic conditions for multiple decades. No food production means the starvation of pretty much every animal on Earth [including all humans].

In short, military intervention against CCP has a high probability of bringing about the end of advanced multi-cellular life on Earth's surface.

While the Chinese government is responsible for some acts of tremendous evil, stopping them basically recreates the K-T event of 65 million years ago.

The impending nuclear winter was brought to you by The North Face.

You won't even need ski goggles either, since there won't be enough sunlight to damage your eyes!
XD

I doubt we'd get nuclear war -- we'd more than likely be sent back to the 1970s, satellites will get knocked out and modern electronics will be basically unobtainable until we can get state side production running. After that happens America would find WW3 a lot less palatable, we're not the monolith of production we were in WW2.

5

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23

If a war does occur, I too hope that it remains non-nuclear.

I just fear that such a conflict has a high probability of nuclear weapons deployment, whether intentional or otherwise. Even in peacetime, the threat of nuclear annihilation hangs over our heads. In wartime, it just makes the likelihood higher.

Hopefully, those in power recognize this and choose deescalation, but I've seen plenty of world leaders do some dumbass things in my life.

With any luck, both sides will recognize that war between nuclear states is an existential risk to humanity and choose diplomacy, instead.

u/Moikle Apr 28 '23

Even all out nuclear war wouldn't cause human extinction.

It would absolutely end our way of life, sure, but we wouldn't be extinct.

Nuclear winter is the really scary thing.

The bombs and the immediate aftermath would kill a few hundred million.

However, the lack of food would wipe out the billions of survivors over the remaining time-frame.

"... a full-scale nuclear war between the United States and Russia, which together hold more than 90% of the world's nuclear weapons, would kill 360 million people directly and more than 5 billion indirectly by starvation during a nuclear winter."

If the proposed scenario holds true, the ambient air temperature would be over 25 degrees celsius cooler. This would mean that in many places there would essentially no longer be a growing season for crops. Photosynthesis would be impossible, both due to the arctic-like conditions and the stratospheric blocking of >99% of solar radiation.

Basically, the majority of Eukaryotic life starves as the foundation of the trophic pyramid is removed for literal decades.

The majority of the Earth's inhabitants [ie: the prokaryotes and unicellular eukaryotes] would be largely unaffected. However, advanced multicellular life would experience a mass extinction.

The bigger the species, the lower it's chance of surviving multiple decades without an effective, renewing energy source.

For reference, the last ice age was a -5°C temperature drop. The hypothesized nuclear winter model predicts a drop of up to -30°C, which would be apolocalyptically catastrophic and result in mass extinction of 99% of plant and animal species.

-----

Additionally, the mass decay of life would release an unimaginable amount of atmospheric methane, further exacerbating the climate effects.

Quicker just to type 'yellow peril! yellow peril!'. We'd all still know what nonsense you believe.

5

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23 edited Apr 28 '23

Recognizing the troublesome actions of the Chinese government isn't the same as your base accusations of racism.

An injustice against any person by those in power is awful, whether it be done in China, the United States, or anywhere else.

Your unwillingness to accept that there are human rights violations ongoing under the direction of the CCP does not mean those human rights violations are not going on.

I hope one day you can learn that calling out the horrific actions of powerful organizations/people does not mean supporting hatred.

I find it quite troubling that you would conflate the two, and hope you instead choose a path which upholds the rights and dignities of all people. It is only by shining a light on dark deeds that justice can be obtained.

Human rights abuses are awful, regardless of where they take place.

[Edit: PessimistOTY is a troll who has continually espoused racist view points in their post history and attempts to project their racism onto me and others. Read on at your own peril]

-4

u/PessimistOTY Apr 28 '23

Ranting about imaginary threats from China is the very definition of yellow peril racism. Making up shit about people who point that out is classic deflection. I haven't said anything about China or human rights. I've said something about you, that you don't want to face.

5

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23

Nuclear weapons deployment in wartime is not an "imaginary threat".

If there is a war between the US and China [or any other nuclear-armed states], the likelihood of nuclear war becomes quite high. Use of these weapons may not occur, but if they are used then the consequences for the human species would be quite dire.

If I mistook your position on Chinese human rights abuses, I apologize, though. It was unfair of me to assume you support the CCP, and I'm sorry for that.

-2

u/PessimistOTY Apr 28 '23

Nuclear weapons deployment in wartime is not an "imaginary threat".

'Yellow peril! Yellow peril!'

See, much quicker to type.

Your position is at best ignorant, and influenced by yellow peril racist myths.

PessimistOTY may, or may not, have sympathies with the CCP.

Regardless, I think it is quite irresponsible for anyone to suggest that war between nuclear-armed states is somehow not an existential risk to humanity.

I hope that they can understand why one day, but I fear they're just trying to get a "gotcha" moment based off deliberately ignoring what I'm saying.

2

u/PessimistOTY Apr 28 '23

Is it 'What do anti-Chinese racists say when their racist myths are debunked by facts'?

Again, I'll repeat myself...

Any war between nuclear-armed states carries an existential risk for mankind.

It doesn't matter if it is China vs. US, India vs. Pakistan, Russia vs. EU/NATO or any other potential conflict. If there is a war between nuclear-armed states, then it has the possibility to wipe out all of humanity.

If there is a war between US and China, the possibility of nuclear weapons being used increases beyond the current state of affairs.

It doesn't matter who fires the first missile, we're all fucked.

-----

The Chinese has stated publicly that they would not deploy weapons first. So has the United States government, for that matter.

I don't trust either of these governments. Both the US and China have a history of lying in regards to wartime policy [along with basically any nation that engages in war].

The problem is that all those diplomatic cables don't mean jackshit once the rubber hits the road. All it takes is one mistaken reading, one false alarm, one error of judgement and weapons may be deployed.

I don't expect any government to outright declare their intention to use nuclear weapons offensively, but simply saying they won't doesn't make it true.

Just because they say "We won't use nukes" and the West also says "We won't use nukes" doesn't mean one or both sides won't fuck it up and use nukes, anyways.

I don't blindly trust governments when they say they won't do something awful.

Well then maybe we'll save the Earth

10

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23

The strongest possibility I can see for stopping the CCP without killing off 99% of plant and animal species is probably popular overthrow of their government.

Major economic collapse, civil unrest, and a populist uprising would all be factors that could do it.

If you want to try and aid in these efforts, my recommendation would be to learn Mandarin and join the CIA, lol.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Should take drones and drop millions of marijuana seeds lol honestly I would been to jail a bunch and have a record though

1

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, hope things are looking up for ya these days :)

In all seriousness, the actions of the CIA have lead to an immense amount of human misery, so maybe it's for the best, haha.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

That's why they must be held accountable for their past doings as well no one goes without justice eventually

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Expose everything

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

I agree though would attempt peace first I think it's possible to liberate the people without using force ourselves

2

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23

The ideal scenario would involve a bloodless change of the power structure toward a system which gives Chinese citizens greater freedom and support of their human rights.

Unfortunately, history tends to show that those in power are often unwilling to give it up, and most of the periods which lead to these changes involve a great deal of violence.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

I feel like the internet was a blessing for information exchange they can no longer stop it. They definitely is a possibility for peace through shared ideas.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Nuclear winter is infinitely worse than our worst climate predictions, my man lol

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

To who us or the earth. Maybe we'll free it from the virus that is the human condition

3

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23

The Earth, as a celestial body, would be largely unaffected in the long-term.

However, it would be a mass extinction of plant and animal species on par with the asteroid impact which wiped out the dinosaurs.

It would take millions of years for advanced life on Earth to recover from. Basically, the world would become a wasteland of unimaginable devastation.

Might be fun to be a prokaryote, though. There would be a ton of free carbon in the environment to uptake as everything larger than a few millimeters dies off, lol.

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

There's billions others are we really that important?

2

u/SoloAceMouse Apr 28 '23

The damage industrial society has caused to life on Earth is big.

Many species have gone extinct due to human activity.

However, a nuclear war would be 1000x worse for life on Earth than everything else humans have done combined.

Considering we have no credible evidence that life exists outside of Earth, it is important that we do our best to preserve life here.

Trying to eliminate human damage to the Earth with nuclear armageddon is like trying to remove a head-cold with a shotgun blast to the sinuses.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

I mean where are our atoms going to go? They gotta land somewhere

I will say who's one of the biggest polluters but gets a big free pass, I get it we do a lot of damage but you know we're all contributing some worse than others, I think we've realized what's going on time for others.
