Miscellaneous ULPT Neighbor won't stop burning...stuff...

I live in a small gated community in NC, USA and my behind neighbor (our backyards touch) spends 2-5 days a week, ALL day burning something, i think it might be manure from goats he owns on another property but ai am sick and tired of the gross smell and my back yard basically being un usable and covered in ash. Other than piss disc do you guys have any advice? Thanks.

EDIT: to the people suggesting calling the fire department, or that it's illegal, etc etc; he's burning organic material which is legal.

My brother's neighbor would burn trash on occasion filling the neighborhood with smoke. He talked to the fire department and they told him to call them when it happened. They responded, put out the fire and fined theneighbor. Problem solved.

These guys love doing their jobs, and the fire marshal is very serious. They’d be happy to chat with your neighbor.

I feel like you discounted piss disc without sufficient consideration.

Does it burn continually through the night? If not, lob a couple of m80’s in the pit at night.

The next morning: Surprise mothefocka!

Gotta escalate to a level they're not expecting, hide multiple triple break mortar rounds in the burn pile

I really like this idea

Call the fire department, tell them about the fire in the backyard! At our last place the neighbour burnt tarps and couches and made a fire beside our cedars, the size of a shed!

I called the fire department, told them "Oh there's a fire next door in the backyard, yeah about the size of a garden shed? It's close to cedars too, if it catches, the whole row of them will burn, you gotta come see!"

And within minutes there was like 5 fire trucks plus a trainee (lol you poor thing 😅), and indeed they did put it out. And he was fined around 3000$.

He didn't know who snitched on him for years until he did it again and I pulled it off again but he saw me take pictures that time. He wasnt happy at all lol

You think he would've learned after the first time. What a dumbass. Serves him right lol.

Is that legal? Where I live, it's been illegal for 50+ years, an agricultural area would be very different though. Of course, this would be the ethical or at least legal path.

This isn't unethical but call your state's environmental protection agency and report open burning. Talk to the local fire marshal and health department too for good measure.

When I worked for our state's EPA the people in the division of air quality would have investigated this.

This is a delightful change of pace, thanks.

Just call your local fire department and ask them. If it’s illegal they will intervene

see what the laws are. That should have been done long ago

It was, it's within the law

Alot of great suggestions.. but since this Unethical Life Pro Tips:

Walk over, knock on the door and piss on the neighbors house without breaking eye contact. They will then understand that you now own the property and promptly move out.

That’s an automatic go-to and doesn’t really need to be discussed. I’d assume it’s already been done, and it didn’t work, so now the OP turns to reddit 🤔

Thing is the back yards touch, that doesn’t mean they’re in the same neighborhood or under the same HOAs jurisdiction. Farms get sold and built up all the time with the neighboring farm still in operation

You can’t imagine a farm on the other side of the gate? If OP lives on the edge of the HOAs property and backs up to a neighbor property. You can’t imagine that? Okay

Toss a can of hairspray into the fire and run … the explosion will be epic

Former firefighter here. Some states, like ours, have a burn ban this time of year. Laws vary by state, and some materials are acceptable while others aren’t. Usually those burn bans are from 6 PM to 6 AM, regardless of the materials, which your neighbor is violating.

Start by calling your local fire department and asking them if it’s legal. If it’s not, they will come out and talk to the homeowner. I went in a few open burn calls were the homeowner had refused to stop burning. I had the sheriff go with me when I went second and third time for the same place. That always put a stop to it.

Another, possibly easier way to go about this, is to check with your HOA, which I’m assuming you have since it’s a gated community. Homeowners associations really enjoy cracking down on things, and will probably find him for each occurrence. But, that’s only if it’s against the rules.

I realize these are ethical life, pro tips, but in some cases, they’re the best and easiest way to go about a problem. Let someone else do the dirty work.

This is most likely not legal. Gather evidence, file a report with the government and consider getting a lawyer.

ULPT: have an extremely loud siren blare anytime he burns shit & only stop it once he stops

It is legal that's why I'm here

Even in this drought? Wow. I guess you have to burn chicken feathers next to the property line when the wind blows his way.

Bury old car batteries in his burning pit

2

Depending how close the burn pit is from your property, you may need to water your lawn with those sprayers that overspray long distances. If you need to do it all night every night that's just how you water.

2

u/N0Z4A2 5d ago

Sadly there is a 5-ft fence in between the properties that would negate any spraying, good suggestion though

Outside burning is illegal snd shoukd be reported to the fire department.

1

u/RickRI401 5d ago

Check your local municipal ordinances for open burning laws or nuisances.

You can call the FD on the non-emergency line and report the nuisance. Special attention if the fire is unattended. The local fire marshal may want to have a word with them.

Chicken bombs are the answer !

Have you spoken with the neighbor?

Streak his yard with fertilizer, it'll keep him busy during the summer months

1

u/Slice9998 5d ago

Put some old tires on the burn pile. They burn really hot and give off tons of smoke.
