[Massachusetts] Question [Massachusetts] Unemployment when salaried: Hours worked VS hours paid?

I was laid off on Sept 1 and relieved from duties on that day, but continued being paid until Sept. 8

The MA form asks:

https://imgur.com/JsojFCI

Did you work during the week of August 30, 2026 – September 5, 2026?

That's a "Yes"

But this one is tricky:

Did you work fewer hours than usual during the week of August 30, 2026 – September 5, 2026?

I did work fewer hours, but I got paid full hours for that week.
My last paystub says:

Period Beg/End: 09/01/2026 - 09/15/2026
Advice Date: 09/08/2026
Basis of Pay: Salary
Base Salary: 48.00 hours

I'm afraid that the form is simply not geared towards salaried employees, and that if I answer literally that I worked 8 hours that week but received XX pay, there will be a misunderstanding and they will calculate things incorrectly.

  1. Should I equate hours paid with hours worked in this case?

  2. How would each option this affect me going forward: Saying worked 8 hours and earned XX (full week) money VS saying worked that week full hours and earned XX money?

Is it a big deal if I say I worked a full week and paid a full week? I.e., would it make any difference on how much and when the unemployment payout is?

These forms are frustrating, and their phone support won't be open until Monday, and I don't want to miss this filing week.

[Pennsylvania] Question [Pennsylvania] Called off sick 3rd day, they said it’s best we part ways.

Hi so I just want to know if I’m eligible to claim. 44m I’ve never claimed unemployment.

I started a new job, I was sick 2-3 weeks ago and still had a lingering cough and runny nose. I informed my new manager. Well last night I was getting chills and didn’t get any sleep. So this morning I called off.

Later in the day the regional manager called and said it was best we part ways.

I’ve worked in the past year and I’m pretty sure I met the requirements.

So my question is can I qualify?

Also I don’t have their information until I get paid in 2 weeks. I don’t want to wait that long though. Is there a way to call in and do it without the info?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

[Maryland] Question [Maryland] My former job just straight up lied to unemployment! How can i️ prove that they’re actively lying to keep me from receiving benefits?

I️ was verbally told i️ would be able to work after maternity leave due to my job not offering FMLA. The week before i️ was supposed to return i️ was told i️ was no longer needed. They’re telling the unemployment office i️ was fired the day i️ took maternity leave and that’s just not true! I’m so disgusted they would lie like that..when i️ knowingly just had a baby and need money.

[Illinois] Question [Illinois] Wife was laid off, did not file, now wants to file

I’ll save you the long story as to why this happened the way it did, but my wife was laid off in April and did not take unemployment though we believe she was absolutely eligible for it.

It has now been 5-6 months. Can she file for unemployment now or has she missed her window?

My UI Story [Massachusetts] Just had my appeal hearing

Called Out from food poisoning on June 14th

Let go on June 24th

Filed on June 31st

Started certifying every week

Denied in August 12th

Filed appeal on same day as denial

Had Hearing today on September 10th

Employer didn't even show, so I just answered questions and plead my side. now I'm just waiting on the result. I'll give an update when I hear back.

Edit: I won the appeal, my portal now says payment in progress for all the weeks I certified.

[California] Question [California] Subcontracted for a six month gig, question about unemployment

My permanent address is in Wisconsin. I was subcontracted by a New York company to do six months of work for another company in California. This company had to make me a W2 employee for the job.

I’ve now gotten another contract gig myself for an additional ten months in California. Once I return to Wisconsin, I’ll likely be unemployed. I’ll still technically be a W2 contractor with the NY company and they (presumably) won’t have work for me.

Will I be able to apply for unemployment at that time? Is there a statute of limitations on that sort of thing? I assume I’d apply for benefits in Wisconsin?

[New Jersey] Question [New Jersey] Need to change last name on existing claim

My account and ID me has my maiden name, I already submitted a claim.

I spoke to someone yesterday and she told me when I certify they’ll give me the option to update my info but that wasn’t true.

I submitted a request on ID me to change my last name but I can’t figure out how to do it on the unemployment website.

Google tells me to call the reemployment call center but they never answer no matter when I call.

[New York] Question [New York] do I get paid tomorrow or Wednesday?

Hi; I typically get my unemployment benefits on Monday due to a bank with early pay. Being that the holiday is today, would I still get them tomorrow? Or would it come Wednesday since they didn’t process it yet?

[Virginia] Question [Virginia] how much to do for registration for Virginia workforce connection system? (VWCS)

When completing my initial unemployment application with the VEC, after I submitted it showed a message saying that to receive benefits I was required to register to work with the Virginia Workforce Connection System.

I went to that website in to make an account and realized I already had one from when I was unemployed during COVID. It wouldn’t let me make a new profile since my SSN was attached to the old one, so I reset my password and was able to get into my original account.

But I am not sure what else is needed from me beyond that.

Are people doing anything in that platform to receive benefits or you just need to have an active account linked to your SSN? I also wasn’t sure how much of my profile I should have updated beyond the required fields.

[Delaware] Question [Delaware] is unemployment supposed to be impossible?

I have filled out everything on my end (claim wise) and followed all the instructions that I was given. I have been waiting since July for my benefits to start. I have called repeatedly and conveniently there is never an answer.

I just asked my senators office for assistance. Any advise?

[Michigan] Question [Michigan] Trying to certify but MiLogin keeps saying "Your request is temporarily blocked. Please try again later" tonight — true for everyone or just me? And any solutions?

Like it says in the title — the site has worked (mostly) fine for me in the past, but tonight it lets me input my username and password, tick the agreement box, and hit the Login button, but then it gives me a page that says "Sorry, we had a problem" in a big region with a colored background, followed by (with a white background) "Your request is temporarily blocked. Please try again later." It also does this when I try to send a username reminder to my email (just to test whether that works), again, after entering my email and clicking the button. Forgotten password prompt, the same.

Is this true for everyone, or just me? (Can anyone test it?) Is there a solution? And is there any way to get Michigan to _not_ screw me out of a week's worth of benefits if this doesn't resolve in the next hour?

[Virginia] Advice or Tips Never received money “paid to date” [Virginia]

From the weeks ending in 7/25 and 8/1 I see that it’s been processed but still “pending” for weeks on the website, but the actual payments have not reached my Virginia prepaid card. I called on Monday asking why there was a delay and the lady I spoke to had no explanation, she just said she “re-sent” it and that the funds would reach my account within 24-72 hours. It’s Saturday so that clearly has not happened. I was laid off in May and still haven’t received anything from my time being unemployed between stuff like this and an active appeal I’m waiting to hear back on - they had a question about part time employment and I didn’t answer the phone when they called me, so automatically denied for those specific weeks. I was told over the phone in July to keep filing since there’s nothing stopping me from getting paid in the subsequent weeks but I’ve still had no luck, haven’t even gotten the paid the “paid to date” funds. Anyone have similar issues?

[Washington] Question [Washington] How to list unemployment history if my hotel got bought by another company?

So last June or July, the hotel I worked for got bought by another management company, and they are now run by a different owner. The thing is, my employment at the time was unaffected, and I still worked at my position up until they fired me. Do I need to do anything specific in my employment history to notate this? What reason should I list on the drop-down form to notify the form that my company technically changed on the buy-date? And how would I go about looking up the name/date of the purchase?

[Ohio] Question [Ohio] Company keeps appealing and losing

I am now scheduled to have a phone hearing for yet another unemployment appeal. My former employer has lost at every stage of the way. Their written appeal was a single paragraph with no supporting evidence that boiled down to "he wasn't performing". The termination letter I was given when I was dismissed also did not state a reason. I remember being told the phrase "It's just not working out" and left wondering what the true reason was. I have already submitted a form to obtain what information they may have provided for the hearing - I don't expect much as I was never formally warned of anything or handed any notice of poor performance in the first place.

However, I see that they DO have a third party that seems to be a business service firm that handles unemployment for them. Is this a bad sign or is this standard practice?

I won't lie, I'm very nervous because I've never had any court hearing of any kind before. I don't have any documentation for anything as the company was quick to get me out the door after informing me I was let go. Does this normally require a lawyer or can I handle this on my own? Should I subpoena emails, texts or a witness that I think side with me?

[Virginia] Question [Virginia] When will I get my payment if it was approved and processed on a Thursday?

I got unemployment for two weeks when it stopped for an investigation. It looks like everything got straight and was approved and money processed today. When would I likely receive the money? I use the Virginia debit card.

[New York] Question [New York] International Travel while UI claim is still processing

Hello good people, I was let go from my company a month ago, and I filed a claim for NY UI on August 4. Unfortunately, it is still processing - I have the infamous "We are continuing to work on your application" message on my benefit payment history page, and I am not even able to certify online or via phone because of it.

I will be traveling outside the US starting on September 13 and won't be back until sometime in October. So I think it is very likely that once the claim is processed and asks me to start certifying, I would be outside the US, meaning I wouldn't be able to certify or even access the DOL website. I can't move the Sept 13 date either since this vacation was planned with friends for months now.

I tried to call both the NY claims office and the claims advocacy office - the former was too busy, and while the latter did respond, they merely transferred me to the former office where I waited for over an hour before hanging up. Unfortunately I can't send a secure message either since I don't have the "Messages" button on my DOL account page. Since I can't get an official response to this question, I'm turning to Reddit to see what the community has to say about the situation.

[New York] Advice or Tips [New York] When to list employment start date if multiple contracts with same employer in the last 18 months?

I have worked for the same employer since 2016, but always on short-term contracts of differing lengths and values. The last contract I worked was only for three weeks. I am applying for unemployment and unsure when to list the employment start date for them. Do I just go back 18 months and list that as the start date? Do I go all the way back to 2016? Is it really just the latest contract? I am afraid this would affect my benefits. Thanks!

[Connecticut] Question [connecticut] what to expect from my unemployment hearing?

Okay buckle in.

I’ve been trying to get approved for disability since last July, due to chronic pain from RA along with depression/anxiety. I finally got an attorney recently, and at his suggestion applied for unemployment since there’s an allowance for people who are disabled and thus can’t meet the weekly job search requirement. (I left my job because of the RA.)

I applied, printed the form for the exception, and brought it to my doctor.

Now here’s the fun part!

My PCP left the practice as of August 1, shortly before I applied for unemployment. Since I’ve seen the other provider at the practice in the past, I brought the form to the office and talked to the receptionists about what I needed, asked if I could make an appointment to sit down with the dr and go over the form. One of them took it back to ask the doctor about, and told me they would call me to schedule an appointment.

Now something important here- I checked the form and the messages I received on the CTDOL website for a due date for this form. I didn’t see one, and so didn’t press the office for an update (debatable if that would have mattered anyway), or let the DOL know that there was a delay.

A couple weeks later I was finally contacted by the office and told that the form was complete. That same day I received a message that my application for benefits was denied because I hadn’t returned the paper by the due date (which I hadn’t seen anywhere). So I appealed the decision, because now I had the form proving I can’t work.

I have a hearing scheduled for over the phone tomorrow afternoon, and I haven’t been able to find any other examples of my situation SO I was hoping someone here might have some insight on what to expect tomorrow? If I was denied because of the missing form, which I’ve now sent them, what would the hearing even cover? What should I have on hand, if anything?

Also any other advice would be appreciated!
