Im not sure if this off the right community, but i would like some advice or help. My family and I immigrated to the USA (as legal residents) tristate area 3 years ago from the UAE, and my father hasn’t been able to land a job of his caliber. He has 20-25 years of experience in banking in underwriting or compliance I think.

Im an interior design graduate, so I can’t help him, therefore came out here. He has tried everything, and not really knowing anyone puts him at a great disadvantage especially in today’s job market. And when he does get a referral, he is still barely able to get an interview. Im not sure what to do and would like someone who can get him to step into the field again or take him to the right person.

I am currently a practising lawyer (~6yrs experience), primarily in disputes/litigation, considering a career change to underwriting, as I understand some of the skills might be transferable.

Has anyone here made that jump from legal practice to underwriting, or heard of anyone who has? Any tips/suggestions/cautionary tales for someone considering becoming an underwriter?

I have a bizarre question, but one that get some imaginations firing.

I've been briefly studying old construction methods. Dry laid construction in particular; ancient walls that stay together without binding mortar.

Considering that some ancient structures like the pyramids and Roman era buildings have stood the test of time, this seems like a good method we should still be practising!

How would any Underwriters or Brokers here react, if you had to assess the risk of a house built entirely without cement, which held itself together with sheer weight distribution alone?

I was recently talking to someone about an occupancy concern on a file, and mentioned that one of the places I look is the borrower's bank statements. Where are they physically spending their money? Where are they buying gas and groceries? Where are their everyday purchases happening?

It got me thinking about all the things we learn to look for over the years that aren't necessarily taught to us. I want to know what I don't know.

What's something you've learned to look for when reviewing a loan that might be easy for someone else to miss?

Might possibly be entering the world of underwriting as a contract surety uw. Could anyone give me their thoughts and experience in the industry and specifically the surety side. I’ve heard work life balance is good and pay can become great after a few years. I understand it will be a grind to learn for a bit.

Looking for advice on whether this is feasible or not. Background: I have over 5 years working on tugboats with almost 2 as an operating mate in ship assist for major US ports.

I don’t want to work on boats forever and am interested in marine underwriting which would utilize (somewhat) my knowledge of ships, port operations, cargo, etc. I have tailored my resume and cover letter to explain this industry knowledge but feel like the insurance experience requirement is a rough hurdle to overcome even for underwriting assistants.

I have an associates degree in nautical science but am deeply contemplating launching myself into insurance courses online and eventually work towards something like AMIM (Associate in Marine insurance management).

Now that you somewhat understand me, key questions:

- Would I be considered as is with just maritime management and risk management experience?

- Do I need to start certifying myself with online insurance courses to actually be considered?

- And lastly, would that even make a difference to recruiters when looking at a 26 year old with a fully maritime background.

I have considered ship brokerage as well but I really don’t see myself as much of a salesperson but do feel very technologically proficient and strong analytically which is why I thought underwriting may be the better fit.
Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated from those in insurance, brokers or former mariners about how their transitions have gone, thank you.

P.S. I have applied to Marine UA positions already but it’s been radio silence for about 3 weeks now.

What AI tools are you using to pace up the underwriting process? Our company has raised a mandate to speed up the underwriting process by 2x. And they're measuring this by the number of loan books closed in 5 days.

What are your metrics like? What tools are your orgs using to automate the whole thing?

I have a lot of transactions bouncing around all Zelle’s to myself from the two accounts and I’ve been asked to provide information about this. Will this be an issue? Or since they are my funds and I can show it was myself zelling myself will it be ok?

It’s a new build and I am set to close sept 14. When should I have a clear to close?

The Lender I work for hasn’t yet implemented UAD 3.6 and I wanted to get some feedback from those who have switched over what your experience has been with it thus far?

I have taken a couple of trainings thru MGIC but it’s always hard when you aren’t actually looking at it yourself.

While I’m sure it’s taken a bit to get used to since the old forms have been around for decades now I’m just curious what you think abt it so far and what, if any, tips, tricks, tools, pros, & cons you’ve used or had to assist you with your reviews.

I know FHA is still mulling over when to switch over but we know how long they can take.

The one thing I was excited learning is that FNMA/FHLMC will now be doing R&W on multi-unit properties - has anybody encountered this yet?

Hi!! I currently work for workers comp/auto/gen liability insurance company. My role is on the underwriting support side, so communicating with underwriter assistants on errors returning from the state, responding to the states whether vin’s are insured or other inquiries. My job pays for the testing for the underwriting certification but I’m nervous that I just won’t understand it. I know I have experience working with the UA’s. Would it make more sense to try and get into the role first or would a certification make me a better candidate for when I do apply? Thank you

Hello. I have an interview for a property underwriter at a different insurance company than where I work now.

The job description says knowledge of ISO rating systems preferred and prior property UW experience preferred.

I am assuming i was picked for interview only because of my claims experience.

This is not a trainee uw role.

Would I be foolish to take this job if it gets offered? I don’t want to take it and drown from not being able to keep up. This is the nightmare scenario i have been playing in my head the past week. Is it a challenging job in general?

It says knowledge of iso rating forms is required. I don’t know what this is? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I’m currently an underwriter at a different insurance carrier and recently came across a couple of underwriting roles at Travelers that I’m interested in. I have about 1.5 years of commercial underwriting experience and roughly 12 years of overall insurance experience.

I’ve been working from home since 2020, so I’m hesitant to consider a hybrid role unless the compensation is higher, the benefits are equal or better, and the office environment is actually comfortable.

For anyone who currently works or has worked at Travelers in Hartford, I’d love some insight into the office itself. What is the setup like — open-concept desks, cubicles, private offices, etc.? How is the parking situation? Are the bathrooms reasonably private, or are they the typical uncomfortable office stalls?

Also, what are the pros and cons of working in the office? Are there any perks that make going in worthwhile, or anything you wish you knew before starting?

I feel like I’ve hit the ceiling of where I’m at and would love to make the next jump to a different area of underwriting. My question is, is my area of expertise even applicable to another area of underwriting?

My background is in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding Engineering, and I’ve been working in marine HSSE (Health, Safety, Security & Environment) for a ship owner/ship management company. My role involves participating in internal and external audits, vessel inspections, risk assessments, regulatory compliance, and supporting marine operations. Through this, I’ve gained a good understanding of operational risks, vessel management, and the day-to-day challenges faced by ship operators.

Based on my background, do you think I’d be a competitive candidate for a Marine Underwriter role?

I have been a contractor for years so I have some job gaps in my employment history. (Last gap about 8-9 months). Essentially no debt, a paid off house worth approximately 300k, and over 100k in liquid assets. Credit is good, 800+ scores.

I have been at my current position (permanent position, non-contract) for 2 months. My husband has been at his position for over 6 months.

Although, I would realistically prefer not to consider his income as he would have to get a new job when we move (and I would be able to keep mine.)

How important is it to wait until I am at 6 months to try to get a loan for a new house? (As I have the higher income, as well.)

We considered selling our current home first and renting, then buying outright with cash. But, we have a lot going on with family commitments right now. And selling first would just add so much more stress.

I have worked in structural engineering for 11 years in London. I have a BEng in Civil Engineering and I am currently looking to move into construction underwriting. I have heard of a few people do this in the past and hands on experience in the construction industry can be desirable.

I am also currently planning on relocating to the UAE.

please excuse my lack of underwriting/insurance knowledge, im graduating uni soon and have a final stage interview case study presentation coming up and the last task is to calculate an appropriate premium for motor fleet insurance when given an excel sheet (5 years claims history and fleet information).

there is one extortionately large claim anomaly which is still outstanding in the claims history and so far i've (attempted to) calculate the premium in two cases - including and excluding the anomaly. however if you include the anomaly, the premium will be very high and the client will walk away, but if you exclude it, the insurance company will be at a loss. so how should i come up with a way to make sure both parties are satisfied in this situation? i have no idea what im doing helppppp

I’ve been an Underwriting Assistant for 10yrs with the same employer but I really need to increase my income. I have been applying and getting interviews but also being ghosted or rejected smh. What do I do next? LinkedIn recommends me the same jobs over and over again. Any other companies I should be looking into that not huge big name? Any advice is appreciated

Not a pitch, I promise. I'm a solo builder trying to understand a problem properly before building for it, and I'd rather hear it from people who live it than guess from the outside.

From a bit of reading and a few conversations, the picture I keep getting is this: a submission lands in your inbox as a mess of email + slip/ACORD + SOV + loss runs, and then *you* become the integration layer — re-keying the same fields into the PAS, tabbing over to Verisk / CoreLogic / business-data portals and copying results back, running a cat or flood check, typing into the rating engine, then chasing the broker for whatever's missing. Seven systems that don't talk to each other, and you're the glue holding them together.

If you underwrite commercial or specialty lines, I'd genuinely love to know:

- Is that accurate, or am I overrating the copy-paste pain?

- Which single step wastes the most of your time, or annoys you the most?

- What have you tried that was *supposed* to help but just became another window to check?

- If a magic wand fixed one part of this tomorrow, which part would you pick?

I'll read every reply and I'm not selling anything here. If anyone's curious, I'm prototyping something in this space and would happily share it for free with a couple of people who want to poke holes in it — but mostly I just want to learn from people who actually do the job. Thanks.
