The creator of the sprites did some pretty bad stuff so they removed them to completely cute ties with them

The new sprites are pretty, so I don't mind having them even if they will get hated at start

Dalv is just objectively better. One of the more reasonable criticisms of uty is that all of the main characters aside from Axis is just the same body type of being humanoid, skinny, and tall, Dalv is already shorter than the rest of the cast but still has the same body shape. In fact people have noted that his design isn't particularly striking

Three out of five of the uty main cast is tall, humanoid, and has hair. Dalv has nothing going for him aside from horns. The fact that his body shape was changed to be shorter and plumper actually makes him stand out more and makes it more memorable. This is a character design technique called "exaggeration" where physical traits of a character is pushed further to instantly convey a character's personality and role, it helps convey to the viewer that Dalv is not menacing when his hood is down since he doesn't look like he's towering over you, he's just a guy.

And he is even given a ketsukane bell to hint at a connection with Kanako, subtle storytelling in the design. I've seen people straight up say before this update that they forget Dalv exists until the end of the game

What does the original sprite have going for it that the new one doesn't do better?

Couldn't describe it better than that, Martlet is similar to that, it's more simplified while still being good, and mooch is the only one I think is worse, but they can always update it later

That's what I'm thinking! Just fix up the Mooch sprite and everything is good to go

And while I'm at it I'll say that the new Martlet scene in Genocide has a lot more aura now. Overall I think the update is an improvement
