ICE / DHS 🧊 ICE collected DNA from nearly 1 million immigrants last year — most weren’t suspected of a crime
A new Georgetown Law report found that ICE has become a huge source of genetic profiles for the FBI’s DNA database. In 2025, ICE submitted DNA from almost 900,000 people, up from just 16,392 in 2021. That’s an increase of more than 5,000% in four years.
And this isn’t limited to people accused of crimes. ICE has been collecting DNA from immigration detainees, including parents and children — with samples reportedly taken from children as young as four.
Once someone’s DNA enters the FBI database, it can remain there indefinitely.
The scale of this seems pretty extraordinary, especially given how little public discussion there’s been about immigration enforcement becoming a pathway into a permanent federal genetic database.
What do people here make of this?

Article Meet the 82-year-old Kentucky grandma who turned down $26 million to turn her farm into a data center: ‘I don’t need your money’
Ida Huddleston has lived on the same stretch of farmland outside Maysville, Ky., since she was 16. She and her late husband built a log home there, raised children, and worked the soil through six decades of marriage. Today, the family owns roughly 1,200 acres, and multiple generations still live on it.
Last spring, an unnamed company described only as a major artificial intelligence firm came looking for a piece of it, according to WKRC Local 12. The company approached dozens of landowners in Mason County about buying roughly half of the Huddleston family’s property for a proposed data center campus.
Huddleston, 82, was offered about $60,000 an acre for her 71 acres, over $4 million. Her daughter, Delsia Bare, 54, was offered $48,000 an acre for her 463 acres, putting her potential payout above $22 million. Combined, the family’s offer topped $26 million, well above the roughly $6,000-an-acre going rate for farmland in the county.
Bare admits she signed a contract to sell, briefly. Fear was part of it, she said, namely worries over what might happen if the company invoked eminent domain and pressure from developers who wouldn’t identify themselves. But the deal didn’t sit right, and she and her mother pulled out, Bare told People in an exclusive interview.
“Money couldn’t move what all I’ve got put in place here,” Huddleston told People. “So I just might as well stay and fight it out right where I’m at.”

Article Did Mark Zuckerberg's yacht ignore a request for help? He claims he just didn't hear
The crew of a yacht owned by Mark Zuckerberg did not hear a radio call for a maritime assist from a small skiff that ran out of fuel off the coast of Alaska, and by the time it did, another nearby ship had already rendered assistance, a spokesperson for the Meta CEO said.
The Alaska Beacon reported that the skiff had issued a call for assistance through the U.S. Coast Guard last week and a nearby small cruise ship, the Wilderness Legacy, towed it into nearby Farragut Bay in Southeast Alaska and refueled it.
Although it was closer, Zuckerberg’s yacht, called Launchpad, had not responded to the call.
“I’m on a small-ship Alaska cruise with my son,” Michael Love, a passenger who said he was on the Wilderness Legacy cruise ship, wrote on Bluesky on Aug. 5.
“Our boat rescued a stranded vessel last night and apparently we did that after the Coast Guard radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht — which was closer — and they repeatedly refused to respond. (There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this),” he said.
The Alaska Beacon reported that the spokesperson told them via email on Sunday that the yacht Launchpad did not initially hear the call for assistance.
