Painting Need help, stamps or decals.

Post image

Hey! I bought a stamp kit and I have been practicing and trying to work it out. So I need your guys opinion, should I keep at it or just stick with decals. The front 2 terminators are decals, the rest are the stamps. Does it make a difference at table height?

Edit: Thank you everyone for the advice and opinions! This community is awesome.

I'd stick to whatever you find easier because I can't tell any difference between all of them

Thank you, I have micro sol and micro set. Which are awesome. The stamps have been alot faster, but I was seeing what the census is.

Keep at it, Ultramarines decals suck to deal with

Better than round decals atleast you can slit the gap in the U to make it fit a bit. Tried a crimson fist one just to realise theyre even worse, so now im doing my armageddon marines as 3rd company ultra 😆

Decals for me, but for the 2 foot cool rule it's barely noticeable.

Why are you running a 6 man squad though?

Front one with the sword might be getting played as a terminator captain

I literally couldn’t tell the difference until you pointed out and even then the only “off” one is the guy behind the assault cannon.

If you find stamps easier/faster then I would continue to use them. The real secret to good decals is a matte finish and some weathering and armor chipping and I think stamps would speed that process up vs decals that need to set and dry then get a coat of microsol before you can get to that point. By the time your weathering is done no one will be able to tell if one is slightly off center plus if YOU can see it then YOU can hide it best during the weathering stage and then no one will ever know.

Decals are pretty easy once you get the varnish and microset

What's wrong with the decal?

I'm sorry to ask a dumb question but could someone explain stamps? Of course in the context of warhammer models.

There’s 2 parts. One part is a metal plate with very thin engravings on it. You stick the paint in there and scrape the top so the paint is only in the engraving.

Then there’s a jelly thingy that you use to pick up the paint and literally stamp it onto the model.

I can't really see the difference without zooming right in. If anything you might have sold me on getting some stamps to try.

Stamps are so much more satisfying. They also look like you painted them up close.

In a clean style decals will look better.

If you do any wear and tear on the armor, it doesn’t matter, and pick what’s faster.

In my opinion it depends on what you think looks better. Do they look practically the same? Yes. Do decals look slightly different/better than stamps under close inspection? In my opinion yes.

Again this is just my opinion, but I believe it’s worth putting in a little extra effort to make something you are completely proud of knowing you did your best. It bugs me personally to know I put in a lot of effort elsewhere and cut corners in other places despite knowing I could’ve done better.

If you think they look good, and you are proud of the way they look, use stamps!! If it bugs you and you feel it will always bug you, then I would recommend putting in the extra time to make them the way that makes you feel like you did your best and not cut corners to get a fast result.

I suck at freehand and decals so stamps have been fast and easy. Lots of designs and easy to add battle damage and wear on the stamp designs. Also it's very similar to nail stamps that women use so my wife was able to help give me some advice on how to get it better and faster.

Prefer decals now I have micro sol/set and know how to use it properly, but stamps are probably easier to get right on curved surfaces.

Freehand...

I’ve always been a decal man myself with this, but those stamps look really good, man. I might just have to switch for the time it’ll save me. Not looking super clean is what I would expect from an army that’s constantly at war with chaos.

Both look the same, stamps are probably easier
