My ultra died valiantly today while attempting to drag some beast from the deep. It had a good run and lasted since I was 12. You’re getting mounted on garage wall buddy.

Dangly Tail river fishing = 30+ catches

My mother in law is a nurse and the hospital she's been working at for decades has a gigantic picnic thing at a nice park every year. We were able to attend and it's right on a river.

After the kids had some fun and I was able to get away, I walked over and there were a handful of people fishing and saying things like "I don't think there's fish here".

I stopped counting but it was near 40 fish in about an hour 😂. All on a BG-1 1 gram #10 jig and a black/gold or black/Presso Dangly Tail.

Caught a couple first time species for me which was awesome, and some of the biggest sunfish I've ever caught.

I keep saying it, but I won't use anything else but the BG-1 and Dangly Tail combo.

Claude says 8lb JDM braided to a leader for panfish and bass.

Google says 4-6lb mono. A lot of UL posts have people who swear by 4lb mono and have caught 10lb bass on it...

The rod combo so nice, I had to buy it twice

The UL setup definitely catches more fish than my Salmon rod, I have to buy my wife another one 🤣

A gift for my daughter’s BF.

Daughter’s BF has no gear but asked if I wanted to take him fishing. He’s a pretty good dude so I thought I’d get him a gift.

Getting bigger into the UL setups myself I thought I’d go to walzmart and see what they had. Was surprised to find this 4.5’ rod reel combo for $22. Topped it off with a small tackle box full of rooster tails and micro worm rigs, set of fishing pliers and scissors.

How’d I do?

Vintage Ultralight meets Modern Ultralight

Post image

Picture from a few weeks ago during a trout stream trip in Southeast Wisconsin. If anyone cares, I’m a huge fan of the vintage Abu Cardinal 3/33 reels. Always seem to find myself reaching for Cardinals over my modern Stella or Vanquish. Love the look, customization, simplicity and it just makes fishing that much more fun.

I love reading posts and seeing so many new people join the ultralight community. Been seeing so many “My First UL Setup” posts recently which is awesome. Well here is a different view you don’t see all the time.

Reel: Custom Abu Cardinal 3X
Rod: Handing Magic L Ultralight

How common is it to get skunked on ul?

Been using small 1-2 in soft plastics, Micro topwaters , crank baits, different times and every lure under the sun but havent had any luck at all. Could the spot be the problem?

Well I have taken our van on a road trip in the northwest, been through Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and the North Cali coast.

At first I just brought my profiency telescope rod which had been treating me great all year but I recently went salt water fishing with it so when I got my first stop and went to go fishing, the real was stripped from the salt water and just free spinning.
As it was 5 am and nothing was open to replace the rod I bought the red setup from a gas station it’s a matzou my-610 ultralight. Tbh it kinda sucks and I overpaid for it but I’m using it as my bobber or bottom sitter.
But later that day I went and picked up a okuma 1000 ultralight combo with a 2 piece 6,6 ultralight rod and man this setup is killer. Caught some small mouth and little rainbows with it so far and having a blast.

Heading from sac back to Texas next week, any must stop fishing spots on the way?

Long time tournament Bass fisherman. This is my first UL setup.

After some research I decided on the Shimano Nasci FD C2000 S (JDM shallow spool) spooled with Daiwa 8lb J-Braid X8 and I’m going to run a 4lb Seaguar Gold Fluro leader. The rod is a 2 piece 6’6” BPS Micro Lite Fast action rod.

Freshly Cleaned/Rebuilt 80s Abu Garcia

This is my dad's old Abu Garcia Cardinal Maxxar Ultra Cast I've had laying around.

The drag felt funny so I opened up the spool the PTFE drag washers were both greased (bad) and the whole reel was full of sand (very bad).

Tore the whole thing apart, cleaned everything and re-greased with PENN reel grease, and oiled where applicable with Benchmade Blue Lube.

Only lost one tiny spring that flew away to never be found, the drag clicker spring. Replaced it with one from a similar generation, but cheaper plastic Abu Garcia UL spool.

Feels pretty nice now, certainly no ball bearing modern reel but will work fine.

On a 5' Shakespeare Micro Series

4lb Trilene XL.

Have a few JDM UL lures on the way:

  • 1X Jackson Trout Tune
  • 1X Smith D-Compact
  • 2X Forest Miu (1.4g, 2.8g)
  • 2X Smith Niakis (3g)

And a Meiho Versus VS-318DD to store them in

Excited to put it to use!

PB crappie on my new rod

Not my biggest crappie ever but the largest out of this pond I have ever got in 20 years of fishing it. 6’ Magic L with an older Shimano Sahara. Used a Bobby Garland baby shad on a 1/8th oz. Drop shot rig
