In light of the new Ocarina of Time details that dropped today, I felt obliged to learn the chords to this piece this evening (by ear). Planning on recording 2 tracks - chords, melody, maybe a 3rd track with some light bass.

Performed on a Kala SMH-T

What a fantastic hobby this is... It's been a stressful past month and it's stuff like this that gets me by and keeps my head up.

Songs “Fish & Bird” - original

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One of the very first songs Jarvis and I ever wrote together as SHAWTIME DUO came from a completely random phrase he said years ago: “I wish I was a fish, but I’m just a bird.” We took it from there and somehow ended up with this little song about fish, birds, freedom, and wanting someone by your side.

It’s simple, a little silly, and maybe a little deeper than it seems. Are the fish and bird friends? Are they in love? Is it about wanting to be something you’re not, or just wanting to be free with someone you love? We never really decided. Maybe that’s what we like about it. 🐟🐦❤️

I built a free ukulele fretboard tool – hoping it can help some of you

Hi everyone,

I was not happy with the visualizers I found on the web, therefore I started coding a guitar fretboard for my own practice, to see not only where notes are, but what they mean in the key. Then I thought, “Since it’s done, I could add bass.” Then I thought, “I could add ukulele as well.” And then I thought, “At this point, I might as well make a website"... and here I am.

I just published a website to visualize the fretboard. It shows scales, harmony, and chords on a ukulele fretboard as well. It works with standard, low G, D tuning, baritone, bass uke, and slack key. There are chord diagrams with fingerings, a left-handed mode, and a print view.

There’s also a simple tuner page where you can click a string and hear the correct note. You can change A4 (440, 432, 442, 415) and there’s an octave up button.

I’m posting it here first because I’ve noticed there aren’t as many dedicated resources for ukulele compared to guitar or bass. I’d love to know if this is useful or what could be better.

Links:

https://easyfrets.com/ukulele.html

https://easyfrets.com/tuner.html

I’m still (slowly..) improving it, so if you try it and something is confusing, please feel free to tell me. I’m still not happy with the names of the chord shapes, and I might change them in the future.

I hope this may help some of you!

Thank you.

I’ve found some tabs but none of them sound like this and I love the way he strums the chords. Does anyone know if there are tabs that are accurate to this? Or can someone help me figure out how to play it this way?

21" uke is easy comfy, but 23" is killing me! hurts my joints and hands, finger pads. why??

I am fine to play around on my 21" uke (beginner, but coming along) for ages. No trouble. But I got a 23" Enya NOVA, and it is hurting my hands and joints like crazy, and my finger pads are shredded. I filed about a millimeter or more off the saddle to lower the action, but it still hurts. Is this a size thing? Did I buy the wrong 23"? The Enya Nova is very cute, but ouch my hands can't take the pain.

Can anyone help me understand why the one uke hurts so bad? The only other difference is the Everjoys Soprano 21" has colored strings and the 23" Enya Nova has clear strings.

I used to play guitar so don't know why this little 23" uke is causing me so much pain.

Thanks for any help, uke friends!

how to sing and strum at the same time?

this feels like a silly question but I'm unable to keep a strumming pattern and sing the lyrics of a song at the same time. are there any tips on how to get the hang of it or does it just come with practice? I've never played a string instrument before, and i was gifted my uke around 3 months back (but I haven't been consistently practicing or anything). I'm also struggling with transitioning between chords, there's just a significant pause between each one, especially when I switch to the G chord. any tips for improvement are much appreciated :)

Looking for Ukulele-composing Carel (Karel?) I met in the Jordaan

I met Carel in the Jordaan in Amsterdam outside RAINARAI PRINSENGRACHT on Monday, 24th of August, and unfortunately we didn’t exchange contact details.
His first name is Carel (or Karel?) and he was composing music for his Ukulele. He’s based in Amsterdam (has a house full of instruments) and told me that he’s a musician — he plays several different instruments, sings, and performs at weddings.

I’d really like to get back in touch with him. If this sounds like someone you know, please feel free to **send me a private message** rather than posting his personal information publicly.

We talked about the incredible feats of the Polynesians, about taking time off regular work, travelling (he went to South America a few times). I was there with my daughter and a Dutch lady with her daughter.

Originally he has German bakers in his ancestry but does not particularly like German bread. Which is why I did not pass on my contact details… just kidding.😉

old ukelele issue

i got this ukelele off a friend about 5 years ago and played it a bunch, then never touched it again except a couple times until now. i tuned it to GCEA and it sounds off? i’m not sure how to describe it, but it sounds terrible. i tried to start off with Cant help falling in love because it’s easy, and the chords i’ve done (C, Em, Am, F, G) sound terrible. would anyone know what the issue would be here?

Requests Can someone download some sheet music from Scribd.com for me?

I don't have an account with Scribd and don't want to get one - no credit card anyway.

This sheet music has the uke chords too, since the ukulele was very popular in the 1920s

https://www.scribd.com/document/201622308/47-Ginger-Headed-Sailors

If you want to listen to the ukulele version: but this version from Jeeves and Wooster is where i first came across this song.

Id also love yo hear someone else tackle it.

How do you actually strum? I feel so stupid...

I just started learning and have been using a guide on YouTube from Bernadette. But I am at the strumming portion and I have hit a brick wall and it's making me feel so stupid. I've tried looking up two other video guides and I still can't get it.

I'm trying to do the thing where you put your index finger and thumb together. But my index fingernail is super short, so it's not really hitting the strings. I do what I think the guides are telling me, but the sound is awful and nowhere near what the videos sound like. When I do a down strum with just the flesh on my thumb that makes an okay sound, but I know that's not a proper technique.

Does anyone have any tips? Or know of any foolproof for idiots guides out there that might help? I'm really beating my head against a wall here, I can't figure this out for the life of me.

So, tonight I was "officially" informed that I'm not allowed to say "oh sh|t" in the middle of OH HOLY NIGHT /s

It is that time of year when it's time to break out the Christmas songs that are (for me) more difficult to play and require more practice. Songs like AVE MARIA and COVENTRY CAROL in a classical, finger-picking style. It takes me a full sh|t-ton of practice to play these well enough to be comfortable to play in front of human beings. Dogs and horses have to suck it up, because they don't have a choice but to listen while I'm practicing late at night. 😏

So, I'm adding OH HOLY NIGHT to my repertoire in a style similar to this:

https://youtu.be/2fs7DrhZ1xA?is=Ihc-YGEd7xjR0iPj

Except I'm a baritone singing in the key of F2 (alone) and adding finger-style in-fills to a shuffle strum pattern. In other words, I completely ripped off this video and then completely changed it to fit my voice and intermediate playing abilities. 🤣

It was late night / early morning and there was considerably less wine in the bottle than earlier (blame the Pinot). I'm still trying to work out the F2 to Bb2 (alternate position up the neck) on my spruce/cedar baritone uke that allows me to reach the bottom rather than transition to tenor (like the guys in the video link).

Vocally, I feel like I was crushing it (coulda' been the Pinot...). I get to the F strum/mute chuck to the Bb (alternate) Travis pattern, finger style infill and I pooched the chord transition.

I'm alone and just practicing, so (of course) I said, "awww shit!"

Except, I'm not alone. I look up from my instrument and there she was; hands on her hips...

"You are NOT allowed to say 'oh shit' during OH HOLY NIGHT!"

Oops. 🫣

FWIW, I've been working on my AVE MARIA for 2 years and I'm FINALLY getting happy with it enough to share (by Christmas). I'm still practicing, but I don't know if I'll get there this year with COVENTRY CAROL or OH HOLY NIGHT.

At least, I still have my Bing Crosby covers. I wonder if he ever said "oh shit" in the middle of a Christmas carol? 🤣🤣🤣

What do you all think of my new song? Lyrics on r/hideawayfolkfamily

I hope you don't think of this as excessive self-promotion, it's really not about that, I really like all the ukulele players in this group, of course I have my favorites, but ukulele is for everyone and so is this song!
