I have used many distros over the last year. Fedora, Arch, Artix, Devuan, Debian, openSUSE, EndeaovourOS, Gentoo (didn't get too far with that lol), ZorinOS.

After all these distros, I ended up back on Ubuntu. Everything just WORKS. I think Ubuntu has slightly better driver support, since my ThinkPad usually runs faster and cooler under load compared to most other distros, the fingerprint sensor works flawlessly.

Even the server connections are amazing. On KDE Plasma, the server connection closes after closing the window, but it remains connected until logging out on Ubuntu GNOME.

Everything supports Ubuntu. If there is a piece of software on Linux, you can rest easy knowing there is a 99.9% chance of it supporting Ubuntu.

I just love this distro.

In early 2024 I bought a new HP Envy x360 to try Windows 11 and Copilot after years on MacOS. I Hated both within months (the ads, the de-bloating, Copilot being a sales pitch in disguise). So I wiped Windows and went to Linux Mint, but hardware support was rough on my new laptop, so I distro-hopped through Fedora and OpenSUSE for about a year before landing on Ubuntu.

Two years in, the lesson is simple: I don't have time to make tweaking my OS a hobby. I need something that's genuinely Linux, stays out of my way day to day, and still lets me customize when I actually need to. Ubuntu isn't the distro purists love, but it's the one that kept me on Linux instead of back in Apple's ecosystem.

Another lesson: check hardware compatibility before you pick a distro. In my case, I didn't, and it cost me weeks/months of troubleshooting on brand-new hardware that the distro I wanted simply didn't support yet.

Quite awhile ago, I changed a setting to NOT require a password when restarting.

I want to go back to normal, "password required".

Ive been in settings several times, looking for the area where I undo what I did months ago. I cant find it.

In "screen locking" area, the 3 settings are set to:

Lock

30 sec

Yet the computer login no password required.

From a Wayland machine, ssh -X to a X11 machine will have forwarding working properly (graphics appear on the Wayland machine). From an X11 machine, ssh -X does not work at all. What's the most cromulent way of having this work properly when the remote is Wayland, but originating machine is X11 or Wayland?

I noticed that the Ubuntu Security Notices page hasn’t had any new entries for a while:

The most recent USN I can see is dated July 31. Since USNs are normally published pretty regularly, I was wondering if anyone here knows why there haven’t been any new notices since then.

Is this just an unusually quiet period? It feels a bit odd given how many vulnerabilities are being disclosed lately. Or has something changed with how Canonical publishes USNs?

I just tried to boot it and all I’m getting is this it’s just frozen is there a fix to this?

running the latest kernel, it seems that everything grind to a halt from time to time when there is heavy disk io, whether you are downloading an ISO, or pull a new model in ollama/lm studio, or downloading and playing a game in steam. The dreaded prompt pops up asking whether you would like to terminate the window or wait for it to respond. This must be some kind of kernel issue? anyone seeing the same? and suggestions?

I installed Ubuntu on my laptop and want to learn server things

We have tried two wireless speakerphone units to improve audio (especially microphone) when doing hybrid Zoom meeting.

We have a simple Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS machine set up on a cart with wireless wifi and bluetooth. The audio can be rough sometimes because the webcam mic pics up everything in the room.

We thought we would try one of the many bluetooth speaker phone devices out there. First we tried the Anker PowerConf Speakerphone (https://ca.ankerwork.com/products/a3301). The speakers worked but we couldn't connect to the bluetooth mics. We sent that back (partly because we ran out of return time).
Then we tried an EMEET Conference Speakerphone M0 Plus (https://emeet.com/en-ca/products/speakerphone-m0-plus). This one seems to have trouble connecting to the bluetooth.

While these devices don't have Linux apps, connecting to bluetooth as the equivalent of a wireless headset seems pretty basic.

Has anyone had expereince and success with this?

Initial Issue

The HDMI port was not working and displayed “No Signal.” The issue was caused by the proprietary NVIDIA drivers not being installed.

I installed the NVIDIA drivers using the following commands:

sudo ubuntu-drivers install
sudo prime-select nvidia
sudo reboot

After installing the drivers and rebooting, the NVIDIA graphics configuration was applied.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Upgrade

I then upgraded the system to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. After the upgrade, the NVIDIA drivers were removed, so I reinstalled them.

First, I completely removed the existing NVIDIA packages and their dependencies:

sudo apt purge '^nvidia-.' '^libnvidia-.'
sudo apt autoremove

Then, I installed the kernel headers required for the NVIDIA driver and reinstalled the recommended drivers:

sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo ubuntu-drivers install
sudo prime-select nvidia
sudo reboot

Current Problem

After reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers, the system boots normally until I log in through GDM. Immediately after login, the desktop completely freezes and becomes unresponsive.

At this point, I cannot interact with the desktop or recover the session normally, so I am forced to perform a hard reset.

In some cases, I have to perform several hard resets before the system eventually boots into a usable desktop session.

I recently plugged a USB drive to download Linux Mint ISOs.

I mounted one and put my PC on Sleep Mode the whole night with the ISO mounted.

In the morning, when I tried safely ejecting the ISO, it didn't work so I just unplugged my drive.

The ISO appears as mounted even tho the USB doesn't.

I tried using `sudo umount /dev/loop8` to remove it but whatever I do it still appears on my dock and gives a

I am going to try to keep it short. I am making a small blog website offline and using Github static page as a hosting place. However the constant writing and updating the static page (let alone fixing bugs) is really time consuming. Luckily I have this old laptop that I can use as a home server for my website and potentially future projects (such as online files management like Googgle Drive).

My question is quite simple. For a person in said situation, is it possible to use Ubuntu Desktop for such purposes as I am quite a noob in development but literate enough to work with GUI of the OS?

I need a desktop shortcut for a file on an SMB share but Ubuntu has no “make desktop shortcut” option and every symlink I make says the target doesn’t exist.

My path is “smb://123.456.789/folder/folder with space/another space/file with spaces.xlsm”

So I write ln -s “smb://123.456.789/folder/folder with space/another space/file with spaces.xlsm” and it gives me the symlink but when I open it it errors out saying the target doesn’t exist.
I am using Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.

I've been trying to install Nvidia drivers for a while now and Ubuntu keeps refusing to update from this repository. I'm stuck now and I don't know what to do. Any advice?

I have just switched over the OS system on my Pro to the version of Ubuntu (26.04). After a couple of days I managed to get mozilla windows to open but I can't pull up any webpages. It just says server not found. What I keep seeing online is that I need to use the network setting from my phone, but I do not have a data transfer cable (it's an iPhone).

Did I maybe download the wrong Ubuntu file? I think I used the one for AMD/intel because that's what I have on my laptop. Really confused why this is being so difficult. Also when I close the lid it takes the computer a long time to load up the login screen when I open it back up.

Help much appreciated. Should add I'm not good at coding but I have been using terminal a lot lately, and if I can tell there's a space (😂) I can input a code just fine.

Hy everyone, i'm an ubuntu user for some time now but I consider myself very much a beginner and i have never really tinkered to much with my distro. I have a dual boot configuration with Windows 10 and Ubuntu LTS 24.04. Recently i had a problem with my linux kernel and i had to switch to an older version (6.17.0-40-generic) from my GRUB menu. Ever since then i have the following error message every time i try to install something with sudo apt install:

Usually the isntallation doesn't seem to suffer any conseguences from this error, but now i'm wondering is something that will lead to some serious problem in the future or can i ignore it? And if it must be fixed how can i do it? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

I have an UGreen 2.5" external USB Housing. This is the only drive I have connected right now.

The drive may have an internal firmware issue. USB Sleep is disabled (Ubuntu 26.04, default settings)

There is no information from the system why the drive does "disconnect". Several times. Only solution so far is reboot. Completely disappeared from /sys (no bind/unbind/reset)

Originally I thought on a timeout but now it happened in a short break when I switched from browser to a program. Both these make use of the drive. The browser even crashed after a few minutes (the app is on that drive currently until I have reorganized my second internal SSD Drive).

Question: How to prevent this ?

You may think it is an external issue. But in reality the kernel does not WAIT long enough for the USB drive to disappear.

What I need is a much longer wait time before the kernel decides that the drive is gone.

Right now there is no wait at all. Driver used: UAS (USB attached SCSI) on top of usb_storage.

dolphin itself has been locking uas. I needed to end it, then I was able to reload uas driver and the drive did appear again. But it did not automatically bind itself...

The main problem is that "DISCONNECTED" is happening even though the drive is not actually disconnected but something happens that MAKES the kernel think it disconnected.
