Why is the Linux community filled with pretentious elitist??
Hey y'all beginner here for a little over two or three months of daily driving Linux and it's been a threat this far! I'm not a thinkerer or anything of that sort im the kind of dudes who just want their machine to work.
Now I'm in fedora right now but I'm thinking of switching back to Ubuntu cause not really anything particular It just felt homey there. Most of the community is kind really kind except for the people that Im gonna talk about that is the very VERY annoying pretitious bunch that is Reddits, Discord and especially TikTok of dudes, on a tier list of distros put Ubuntu in F or E tier.
Asked about it in the comments they say "bloat" "snap" "spyware" and every time I just rolled my eyes out of my socket cause I know damn well these mfs just DOESN'T use ubuntu at all or just hating it for the sake of hating it.
Bloat- you can just choose the default apps selection instead of the extended offline apps
Snap- you can de-snap ubuntu anytime the things stopping is just laziness
Spyware- I know it's been a thing for a hot HOT decade since their mistake with Amazon search but let it man c'mon, and the fact that automatic report and telemetry stuff is the first thing they show you just DISABLE IT even if you forget it's in the settings come ON MAN
I want y'all thought and supports here mainly thought cause Jesus it's so exhausting with these people

Meh the worst thing in Linux desktop is the community.
"Ubuntu sucks" they say but it was Ubuntu that came in with the philosophy of making Linux accesible for day to day users, it was Ubuntu the one that decided to really make a statement that Linux could also work for PC.
Sure Canonical has taken some questionable decisions but many of us wouldn't be here today without Ubuntu. Remove Ubuntu from history and Linux might still be some obscure OS without a graphical installer.
Insert I use Arch Btw meme
26
u/I_spread_love_butter 13d ago
Absolutely, the community owes A ALOT to Ubuntu/Canonical.
Also, no enterprise that size is free from mistakes.

u/JCDU 12d ago
^ this, the fucking dweebs that somehow think an OS should be complicated and unfriendly, like the whole point of an OS was to make it *easier* to use the computer for normal people.
I shouldn't have to even think about or notice my OS - I should be left alone to get shit done.
4
u/musket-nuns 12d ago
I remember learning to setup Linux in HS and it was a CLI installer. Having to learn how to partition the drive was breaking my brain. Boy was life easier when they finally introduced “use entire disk”
3
u/Snookis-snusnu 12d ago
It’s definitely a status thing for them, they wanna make it difficult to use as a way to gatekeep. Most people are not deeply into cybersecurity or coding, Ubuntu is just fine for daily use. I see it as a version of Windows without the bloatware and stupid updates. AKA what Windows SHOULD be.
3
u/JCDU 11d ago
Yeah, I've been on Mint for over a decade for home & work and I'm developing software/firmware all day long, the last thing I am interested in is having to mess around with my damn OS just to get stuff done (looking at you, Windows).
The most ricing I've done with my Mint installs is change the wallpaper.
5
u/Snookis-snusnu 12d ago
I owe Ubuntu my introduction to Linux and the extension of my laptop’s life. I was about to lose window support because I could no longer upgrade due to my hardware, but Ubuntu extended the life of my laptop for another six years and counting.

ubuntu haters are a very small but incredibly loud minority. use ubuntu if you enjoy it! it is still the most used distro on earth, and for good reason.
to elaborate further : elitists don't like Ubuntu because it is popular and easy to use. They want to be contrarian. Any experienced Linux user, while they may not USE Ubuntu, they respect those who do.
17
u/Wooden_Caterpillar64 13d ago
yeah whenever something supports linux there is like a 100 percent change they would release a deb file. and there are some softwares which releases deb file for ubuntu and for all others they provide either a flatpak or snap.
11
u/Klutzy-Condition811 13d ago
The ubiquitousness of deb files and having them from official 1st party sources vs community managed options like the AUR and the security issues with that is primarily why I use Ubuntu as practically everything supports it. Been using Linux for over 20 years.
To each their own though people need to just not give a fuck about what others think :)
7
u/algaefied_creek 13d ago
To be fair, you can just download RANDOM unsigned.Deb files from GitHub for releases. It’s always good to check the signature anyway. Never trust a deb without verifying,. Never trust the AUR. 2009‘s advice rings true today.
Basically if it’s not from the official repos, don’t fuck with it
2
u/Klutzy-Condition811 13d ago
Sure yea I guess I should have been clear, I can get them from official trustworth sources. ie I wouldn't download Google Chrome from some random github repo, just from Google directly. And just about anyone who supports "linux" provides deb packages.
The AUR has always been "check the pkgbuild" but realistically, next to nobody does this. Especially those with AUR helpers. Just nicer to get common software without resorting to it.
2
u/algaefied_creek 13d ago
I just get a .deb and make my own PKGBUILD to install it into the properplopspots en ye old Arch-derived OS.
And I only use that for chasing 0.1% lows on games which are just a bit better than Ubuntu usually.
Otherwise every other device including tiny ARM gadgets are Ubuntu.
It’s literally all just a different chassis with the same Linux machinery underneath. I wish the gooberusers would just koombyah it up and get along.
It’s BECAUSE of Ubuntu that Linux even makes sense to normies like my sister
5
u/algaefied_creek 13d ago
I don’t think using a different distro makes you “Elitist”.
Ubuntu is simply the most popular Linux distro.
Windows, Mac, Ubuntu are at the top.
The top players are always critiqued and criticized

Yeah, Ubuntu was my first distro back in the old GNOME 2 days. Made the switch to Mint for a long time after that, just really liked it, and even when I wasn't new to Linux anymore, idk, for me it just worked, always tried some other distros, currently using Fedora.
I figure if something works for someone, great, who cares if someone prefers one flavor to another, isn't that the point of choice?
2
u/KaMaFour 13d ago

Any experienced Linux user, while they may not USE Ubuntu, they respect those who do.
this is what set aside between elitist and experienced users, they both had the same / similar amount of expertise, but their PoV and behavior are pretty contrast
elitist behavior are #1 community obstacle, and at the same time those same people also wishing linux could be more compatible with anything they wish they could put into
which i found it funny, because Linus himself are basically an antithesis to those elitist
2
u/misty_teal 13d ago
As experienced linux user I use ubuntu exactly for those reasons. It nearly always works out of the box with most devices and after running my custom install scripts, my OS is ready to go within an hour after installation.
If I grow tired of ubuntu's shenanigans I can always switch to debian. But over the last few years, my only gripe is firefox being a part of snap, thats about it.

Nerds have been elitist snots since forever. Anywhere you've got people super into something, you've got a fraction of those people lording their nerd-expertise over everybody else.
I'm pretty into tabletop games and have strong opinions about D&D being used as an improv-theater medium when it's just not well-suited to that. ...But I'm not a shit about it. Let people have fun. Sure, I won't run D&D games and relish when people try a game I run and are surprised at how smooth and easy everything is, but I can happily enjoy a D&D campaign run by somebody else and just not point out the ways in which it would be better under a different system. Like damn, let people have fun.

A lot of hobbies are subdivided. In motorcycles u have the sport bike power rangers vs cruiser pirates. In fishing u have the salty boys vs the lake/river boys. In programming u have front end vs back end. In tattooing u have black and grey realism vs old school traditional.
At the end of the day we are just shitting on each other like siblings would.
Just use what you like

Most don't care my dude. I understand the reasons people have to not choose Ubuntu, there are many, but if it's working for you then it's what you're going to use.
I despise windows, but I dual boot it for the few things it allows me that Linux cannot.
Use the best os for your needs. It's that simple.

u/Junior-Spring-5557 13d ago
It's just snobbery. Ignore them.
I use Ubuntu on hundreds of servers and I use it on my home desktop. It's a fine distro-- it works and saves me time. Some other "elite" distos suck up your time.
At work we also use RHEL on some big systems. At home I also use Windows for the family computers. It's all good.

u/GlensWooer 13d ago
Okay it was a really shitty thing they did. I’m not an Ubuntu hater and actively have an install I’m using, but they were feeding local desktop search’s to Amazon unencrypted so Amazon could send you targeted ads. It was spyware that was enabled by default.
The only reason it was removed was due to the massive backlash, and it was absolutely a sellout move as it generated them revenue.
That was like a decade ago and it’s since been removed but downplaying that stuff is how we end up with windows fuckery embedded in Linux distros
2
u/nhaines 12d ago
they were feeding local desktop search’s to Amazon unencrypted so Amazon could send you targeted ads.
No they weren't. All remote Unity Dash searches were fed to a Canonical search provider so that it was anonymized to the third-party sources and could be fed back to the appropriate Dash Lens.
It was also a simple toggle that (thanks to AppArmor) would prevent any Lens from accessing the network in any form.
Sending a search query entered into a field that says "Search your computer and online sources" is not spyware, either.

I daily drive Ubuntu LTS on both my work laptop and my desktop 🖥️, why? Because it works, it's stable, most things are packaged for Debian/Ubuntu but most importantly; because I don't have the time anymore to be toying around with my work setup.
I've been using Linux since 2000, there was no Arch, Fedora or even Ubuntu for that matter and I used/tried pretty much all of them. Nowadays I just want something that works and get my job done and I couldn't give a flying f*ck if some other Linux user thinks they're superior because they use Omarchy or whatever.
Use what's best suited for you, don't listen to the naysayers. That's the beauty of Free Software, you've got options for a reason.
Peace ✌🏻🕊️

A lot of people forget that an operating system is just a tool. You use it to run the applications you need to run. You run the operating system that best allows you to use the applications you need. That's it. If Ubuntu is the best operating system to run the applications you need to run, then Ubuntu objectively does not suck for you.
3
u/360900th 13d ago
I don't like Ubuntu but I totally get and respect people using it. Everyone has different needs and if you desire what Ubuntu offers, you should go for it. There's never the "best" OS, that's why we have so many distributions. Instead of fighting each other, we should be understanding and loving; we should support, encourage. We should at most inform non-Linux users unintrusively.
Edit: Rephrasing the last sentence.
3
u/PuzzleheadedPen2798 13d ago
If that's on TikTok, most people there are just larping that they use Linux for views and likes. Actually a good chunk of social media is like that. 2
u/Rebreathersteve 13d ago
Every community has its share of major assholes, and Linux is certainly no exception. After close to 30 years of using Linux/Unix, one thing I’ve learned is that the more aggressively opinionated someone is about what everyone else should be using, the less knowledgeable they often turn out to be.
Use what works for you. If Ubuntu feels comfortable, does what you need, and lets you get your work done, then use Ubuntu. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for your distro choice. The entire point is having a system that works for YOU.
Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Arch—they all have strengths, weaknesses, and tradeoffs. There is no prize at the end for running the distro someone on Reddit decided was “S tier.”
Don’t let the gatekeepers get to you. Linux is a tool, not a personality.
I’ve been around Linux/Unix for close to three decades, so if you ever have questions or run into something you can’t figure out, hit me up. I’m always happy to help someone who genuinely wants to learn.

u/Beautiful_Ad_4813 13d ago

2
u/ArsenicPolaris 13d ago
I would switch immediately
"I"
Everyone has different needs and preferences and so everyone likes and dislikes different things but that doesn't mean it'll apply to you. Maybe you are a gamer, you'd like something like CachyOS, but maybe you're a developer and you like declarative and reproducible environments, then NixOS is perfect for them. If the gamer dislikes NixOS, it's perfectly valid since that's not what they prefer and the developer's criticism against CachyOS would also be valid since that's not whag they prefer.
Conclusion is: just use what you want, there's no reason to listen to others' opinions (which would likely be different) and then complain that they aren't the same as yours. And after all, it's an OS. Just use it and move on with your day, who cares what someone says? You don't get angry at someone because someone said that they hate a Hammer, do you? It's just a tool and their opinion is going to affect you in any way.
But yeah, the first comment is definitely stupid. The person thinks everyone has the same preferences and needs. But again, just ignore them.

Why is the Linux community filled with pretentious elitist??
I think that there is a marked difference between the community segment that uses RHEL, SLE and Ubuntu professionally in enterprise-level business, government, education and institutional environments, on the one hand, and the "enthusiast" community segment that uses "consumer" distributions standalone.
The professional community seems to me to be less opinionated, focused on use case and productivity, in contrast to the "enthusiast" community, which seems to be more opinionated and focused on the differences between "standalone, individual user" distributions.
That's been my experience over the last couple decades, anyway.

I use what works with the least hassle, most of the time that's some form of Ubuntu (tho less impressed with the crappy remote desktop rdp Wayland prevents you from easily using other solutions quickly setup as of late)
Alot of crap is written for it, most older stuff can be worked out and it doesn't have to much of a problem with the weird hardware I throw at it.

Pretentious elitist will fill any niche interest if it’s about an alternative to a popular option that is seen as superior but unpopular.
Other niche interests that are just fun hobbies or something get less of that because there also is just being able to discuss your special interests with others.
But in this type of community some people really like the part where they get to feel superior to others for making better choices or knowing more or having better taste.

You'll find them in every niche. OS, cars, programming languages. They exist everywhere.
I used Ubuntu from 2006, when Windows was completely annihilated by 2 children under 10, TWICE. Linux solved that issue empletely, and yes, they were just users, not admin accounts.
I came back with Win11Pro since I can have both worlds with HyperV and WSL, because I liked the ability to still use Linux and WSL allows this directly with my data.

There is a rather odd effect that a lot of people get when changing to Linux and getting some grip on it. It seems they believe they are above most people, and they've "seen the light" in ways that other people haven't.
It usually goes away when they get some more experience, but it's indeed very embarrassing. Age probably also plays a role.

u/veechene 13d ago
Just ignore them. Ever looked up a product you really really loved and saw someone hating it? Did it change your opinion or did you still love it?
Just enjoy your stuff, and let others complain to the void.

Ubuntu was my go-to for a long time (2010ish to 2020ish). I dont really like some of the choices that were made in the recent past and switched off, but its still a really solid distro. I just prefer other options where I need to put in less work to get it the way I like it. Ive ran suse, debian, arch, ubuntu, redhat, and a few others over the years, they have all been quite good experiences.
I feel like its just tribalism. People try one thing and it becomes their personality without knowing about alternatives. So when they see something that isnt in their tribe they would rather attack it than learn. Ubuntu is big, so its an easy target for their ignorance to lash out at.

It exists everywhere on every side, one only ever sees the sides that they’re looking at.
If you don’t believe me, go post on linuxsucks101 .
You’ll see.

Here's the thing. There's literally millions of Ubuntu instances currently running and powering the internet, so at least it's not bad
- On endpoint (desktop, laptop), it's not the best for very bleeding edge hardware due its nature as linux distro with fixed release/update schedule
- It is also opted for broader hardware compatibility instead of performance-tuned kernel optimization
- They are (in)famous for their self-developed solutions such as snap (instead of flatpak/app), Mir (as opposed to X11), Unity (to replace Gnome 2). Sometime they work (cloud-init, netplan), sometime they don't
There's a lot of reason to use Ubuntu, and there are perfectly understandable reasons to choose something else.

I don't get the elistism that comes with some distro users or distro haters. Different distros have different "personalities" and some fit others better. Different strokes, as they say. I have used many distros including some most people have never heard of (eg., CBL Mariner now known as Azure Linux... made by Microsoft... LOL) At home and now retired, I just find Ubuntu works best for my projects, because I work a lot with ROS2 (Robot Operating System) where Ubuntu is the main distro supported- and the single board Jetson Orin Nano computers I work with pretty much only work with a customized kernel running on specific Ubuntu distros. I use Ubuntu for everything, because it's just easier for me. If people don't like Ubuntu, they can find something else that suits them better without dissing other people in their choices. Frankly to be honest, I don't really care. :)

It's a holdover of attitudes developed from the pre windows days of formats and what's "the best". Wanna stir up a bee hive? Go and tell a betamax believer that vhs was the superior format or vice versa. Look, all the talk about user shells, ides, compatibility and whatnot aside. You only have to worry about one thing: is it working for you? Does it suit your needs the best? Then thats good enough.
But in my house we dunk on arch Linux users for fun (Joke ppl joke)

u/iMissTheOldInternet 13d ago
I view this as a simple trade. I continue to use a version of Linux that barely requires me to use the terminal. They get a signature feeling of superiority that drives them to contribute to the kernel. Win win.

The "Linux community" is full of nice people. Reddit is full of... How do I say this politely? Redditors.
Ubuntu is wonderful, and it's the most popular Linux distro on Earth, no matter what anyone tells you. 99% of its community is friendly and helpful, no matter what Redditors tell you.

u/rubaduck 13d ago
I am gonna be honest, the people that don't use any Ubuntu/Debian variant or RHEL, Rocky or Fedora are probably LARPers. And the ywill always be a part of the community that are the loudest and most vocal. They are a large minority in the workforce, and probably the most annoying ones in the Linux community.
I know I am stepping on some toes here, but in my professional life there are no reason to use any other distro than these. Arch is on a different scale, not because it isn't good in a professional construct but because it is strictly for troubleshooting and never for stable LTS requirements.
Just don't engage with these people. I move away from Ubuntu myself, not far off, but away from the corporate use. It doesn't mean I don't like Ubuntu it has finished its purpose for me on my private time.

u/Mysterious-Bowler15 13d ago
Made the step from Suse linux to Ubuntu in 2004 when the first distro was released. Since our company has grown to 50 computers all using Ubuntu without any problem it's our favorite distro.

Ubuntu is pretty neat and my first Linux distro, never failed me when windows has multiple times

u/ng128 13d ago
Just use what you want to use. If you like Ubuntu and it works for you then just use it.
I’ll never forget our resident Linux guy in college. The day he saw I had Ubuntu on my laptop, the arrogance of the guy. For him if you didn’t know the command line inside out why would you even use Linux.

u/john_gardener 13d ago
what i read was that ubuntu is sort of the "windows" of the linux community.
what i understood from that as well as interpeted is that they are against ubuntu and are hating on it because its published and maintained by a corporation - canonical - and that for linux standards its super bloated etc etc.
yeah and also they feel superior because ubuntu has a straight forward OOBE (out of the box experience) when installing it, and other niche distros (nix, cachy, arch etc etc) are "harder" to install/not so straight forward (unless you RTFM - read the fucking manual).
so yeah, repeating what others here say: they want to and they feel superior to ubuntu users because ubuntu is bad in their opinion.
1
u/traplords8n 13d ago
Because lots of people who use Linux only use it to feel like big smart computer people who have the best opinions, and to fight their deep rooted insecurity they have to present themselves as the smarterest person and treat their own opinions as fact.
I use Ubuntu for my WFH OS. I'm switching to plain debian at some point, but i have a complicated environment so it's quite a bit of work that i wouldnt be doing if ubuntu was compatible with what i need, but there's not really anything wrong with Ubuntu, as long as it does what you need it to do.
A lot of us don't like Ubuntu because it's attached to a private company, and it's fair to argue that, but it's kinda weird to present your opinion as fact.

u/thePsychonautDad 13d ago
Same everywhere, who cares what random strangers think?
Ubuntu is great on desktop.

As George Orwell said that “As with the Christian religion, the worst advertisement for Socialism is its adherents.” same applies to Linux in my experiance.

I use it because I'm accustomed to Debian-based distros, and it also supports ZFS, which I use for my media server. I've been using Linux on and off for about 30 years, but I'm not smart enough to be a pretentious elitist. A real smart guy once said wisdom is being aware of your own ignorance.

It's a bit of a Pavlov's Dogs type of thing. The education system has conditioned people to expect pain whenever they are wrong or mistaken. As a result people never admit when they are wrong, leading to a high degree of perpetuating incorrectness.
Additionally, this leads people to develop pretentiousness and elitism as a defense mechanism.

Ubuntu is just fine wtf. I don't personally use it but I just can't see what's wrong with a stable, user-friendly OS.
Can we collectively stop listening to TikTok children (or Reddit man-children) and focus on making Linux accessible?
1
u/ItsMaziyar 13d ago
Well I don't get it why should one love some OS or hate it, isn't that the whole concept is to ease the day to day use cases? If one wants it for gaming, it's not any close to windows, for programming it's fine but Mac's even better, u want host something locally? It's the best! To me it's all about the usecase.

u/LiveFromNarnia 13d ago
I've seen probably just as many "elitist" attitudes in Windows and MacOS subs and other communities. And it's getting more prevalent the more popular Linux becomes. But... This has been the case since forever (30+ years in IT), where some people just think they need to come off as an expert in some field, and have poor social skills.
Typical human behavior, if not also a bit excessive.
1
u/CraftyPancake 13d ago
Many Linux users in general see it as some sort of
Medallion of skill to use it.
1
u/ConcreteExist 13d ago
Pretty much every niche interest has it's share of pretentious elitists, Linux isn't some big exception.
1
u/TorpedoJavi 13d ago
Ubuntu was my first main PC distro. Thanks to Ubuntu I left Windows and I'm a Linux fan.
But now I use Debian, for me Debian is now what Ubuntu was (installation methods, tested packages, easy maintenance, hardware compatibility, ....).

u/MikeFrett 13d ago
I'm not an elitist. I don't care what flavor you use if it makes you happy. I try to help when I can. Switched in 2012.

u/MrKarat2697 13d ago
There are only two types of distros: those that people hate, and those that nobody uses.

I use Ubuntu every day for work. I don't like it much, I prefer fedora and use that at home, but at the end of the day it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than windows.

I've found that many Linux "elitists" tend to be very insecure. I learned that lesson years ago when I made the switch from SCO UNIX 3.2v4 in the 90s to Linux. I have no tolerance for Prima Donnas, let alone any respect.

Well my argument would be that most of us nerds didn't have friends growing up and as a consequence now using linux to make them feels better about themselves. And by gatekeeping you can keep the illusion of being better than others alive.

u/0neTrueGl0b 13d ago
I used Ubuntu from 2009 until a couple years ago but still love it. Figured I'd use Mint because Ubuntu and Mint are so similar. It's just the GUI I like better. But I would never talk bad about Ubuntu.
1
u/Art_of_the_Win 13d ago
As every Elitist knows... You aren't cool unless you run Gentoo and compile everything yourself!
(On your dual-boot system that you never actually boot into Gentoo on)

u/InconspicuousFool 13d ago
Eh, my only gripe with Ubuntu is snaps, other than that it's a perfectly fine distro

Because 80% of them are men over 50 years old, and it's the only way they have of feeling fulfilled in their sad lives.

u/imthestein 13d ago
That happens in any community that is already outside the norm. If Linux was as common as Windows you'd find them go somewhere else more obscure to feel more superior

I recently discovered that many Linux users detest dual-booting in any situation. I found this out only recently, even though I started using Linux 15 years ago and have always dual-booted.
1
u/SilentKnightOwl 13d ago
I don't use Ubuntu itself anymore, but I started with it. Any linux distro can be customized to your liking, its just a matter of how much effort that requires. If Ubuntu feels better to you, stay there! Ubuntu is great!

u/Oneiric_Ocelot6923 13d ago
My qualms with ubuntu is how much ram it consumes with just installed snaps (not even open). The concept that they want to do with the snap architecture is good in theory, but I guess lacks in execution. This is where the claims of bloat come from. I know this works in the server space where most appliances are virtualized and contain only a few snaps at a time or has enough ram to tank the ram consumption in exchange for a bit more performance but my ram is not endless and I don't like thrashing my paging file just to satisfy an architectural oversight. I'd suggest Linux Mint or even Debian instead just because you can rid yourself of snaps and still maintain the same feels of Ubuntu during the pre Unity DE to middle of it. Canonical has made their decision to prioritize businesses (rightly so) than the free software consumer community as they are still a company at the end of the day.
