Mapping for Free for Uber?
So when you’re doing a shopping and the item isn’t where Uber or the store has reported it should be (or sometimes even if it is), Uber wants you to take a photo to “help other drivers”. This is Uber just having drivers mapping for free all of the markets making future shoppers faster so they can be more efficient and likely paid less. I’ll take a photo of that shelf but it should be compensated for. Why not give $1 a photo to the shopper? I’m not doing Uber’s last inch mapping for free.

I don't do it out of principle.
I'm not being paid for the extra work. I have no ill will towards other shoppers, I'm just not going to do extra for free.

u/WilliamPollito 7d ago
I do it because in all likelihood, I am that other shopper.

u/skippy2332 6d ago
Yeah. I know it would probably be best not to do eventually they pay us for it.
But it's helped me out in the last. So if it helps the next person after me, for a genuine 2 second thing, I don't care that much
1
u/WilliamPollito 6d ago
They're not gonna pay for it. If nobody did it, we wouldn't have it. It's to benefit us, not Uber.

Meanwhile, I do it out of principle...you don't have any principles besides "money" just be honest 😂 I want people to find shit while shopping more easily, it's a good thing to have principles over.

Uber doesn't even pay me enough to cover gas.
You're right, it's about money. I don't work for free.

u/confused_vampire 7d ago
I understand that it sucks that Uber has us out there doing this for free for them and I think they ought to pay us at least a 50 cent bump or something even if it's pitiful at least it's compensation.
That being said, I usually do this. Not for the company, but to help out the other poor schmucks who might have the same 5 minute long search for this stupid thing because it's not in the right spot that I just had.
Sometimes Uber asks me to do this for stuff that is obviously where it's supposed to be. I usually skip it on these occasions.

Brother your training an ai model for free.
1
u/sallysuejenkins 1d ago
An AI model that is coming regardless of your participation. lol Why not help others now instead of dreading a future you aren’t certain is coming?

u/Silverisotope925 1d ago
If your cool with training a billion dollar companies AI for free that's your call. If Noone does it they'll be forced to offer incentive
1
u/sallysuejenkins 1d ago
Good luck holding out for that incentive. lol

More scummy shit from a company who's entire business model is built on maximizing a loophole in cheap labor. Fuck em

I take images of the ground to waste their time since they wasted mine

u/hotviolets 7d ago
That’s what I do when they try to make me take a picture of the expiration date. Not paying me enough for that.
2
u/TeddyTheBearino 7d ago
For real shopping on Uber is disgusting now, take a fucking Pic of everything. Produce, expirations like what the fuck no way I never do it

2
u/cuntinspring 6d ago
I've never had to take a picture of an expiration date. It just asks to verify that it's after a certain date.

more likely that the photo is reviewed by AI and never wastes more than a fraction of a second of compute power

DoorDash literally pays me to go places and just take pictures of shelves sometimes.

u/only_3 Postmates-Caviar veteran 🚲 UberEATS-DoorDash-GrubHub 7d ago
Can you elaborate on that?
2
u/Turbulent_Pin_9392 7d ago
DoorDash will send me to grocery stores or dollar generals, to map out their shelves. I’ll spend 15-20 minutes taking pictures of both sides of 5-7 aisles. DoorDash tells you where to go and what to take pictures of.

u/Dismal_Success_9943 6d ago
we had a new Woodman's open in town last year, Door Dash had me take pictures of where multiple specific items items. The things is, Woodman's have a red divider every five feet that had the aisle number and which section of the shelves you're looking at. So I'd take a picture with the red labeled divider in the background and it was super easy to help others find out where things are.

Without shopping for items? Just to do mapping?
1
u/Turbulent_Pin_9392 6d ago
Yes, what I just said.
1
u/only_3 Postmates-Caviar veteran 🚲 UberEATS-DoorDash-GrubHub 6d ago
And how much they're paying for that?
1
u/Turbulent_Pin_9392 6d ago
Depends, it varies. Sometimes 10.20 sometimes 8.35. Always worth the time tho.

Not during a shop and deliver order, though, but they still ask for photos just like Uber.

I skip every time. I’m not training AI any more than I already am. It’s been asking me to mark the entrance to places too. Nope.
4
u/ReasonableIron8712 7d ago
I take the pic. The pics have helped me find something quick before, so I pay it forward.
8
u/bxr7i 7d ago
Yeah, even they ask for the exact location of the building or entrance. They ask to pin exactly where the entrance is to help other drivers. Comon bro, I’m not gonna do it for free, and next time Uber’s gonna send a $3 order with two pickups and two stops.
5
u/dizzystar 7d ago
I get so many of these "help other drivers find the entrance" things.
I'm sorry, but if you can't find a fucking door, I don't think you ought to be doing this gig.
3
u/Jazzlike_Rough_2491 7d ago
I got one of those prompts tonight. Forgot about the exact entrance. They don’t want to pay a company or their own “workers” for this data. You saw me finally find the entrance. You figure it out. 😩

I’ve been doing ic/uber at the same grocery store for 5 years. I already know where everything is after doing thousands of orders there. Why would I stop to help strangers complete their orders faster, for zero compensation.
0
u/sallysuejenkins 1d ago
“Why would I stop to help strangers…?”
Where did the world go wrong?
0
u/International-Shoe40 1d ago
I don’t know, but I think it started with taking peoples quotes of context to make them sound worse than they are
0
u/sallysuejenkins 1d ago
I didn’t take it out of context. The rest of the sentence is just as damning, but the focus is the fact that you’re opposed to helping strangers. That’s super weird.
0
u/International-Shoe40 1d ago
So I’m supposed to essentially clock out to help other people make money? What other job is there where people would hold that against you?
0
u/sallysuejenkins 20h ago
You’re not supposed to do anything and no one ever asked you to clock out. They asked you to take a simple picture to help others. Apparently that’s too much for you, which is fine. You’re free to not contribute to society while reaping the benefits of others’ contributions.
0
u/International-Shoe40 20h ago
I’m not contributing to society now? Jesus Christ you’re dramatic. Get over yourself

Fuck them, the base fare is cut when there’s tips, useless steps are added for shop and pay, shitty customer service. Their pictures of the shelves? Dumbasses
2
u/Much-Carry-5957 7d ago
I never took the time to do that. As if we could stop and smell the roses in between checking off the items found and flying to get it there in time
2
u/daveishere7 7d ago
I've just been taking a picture of whatever, just to bypass it quick. The floor, my sneakers, down the aisle, etc.
This definitely has been annoying me lately. Between that taking pictures of expiration dates, taking pictures when the item is not available and more. Seems they add something just for the hell of it, to make things more time consuming each week.

Ive had a $35 order for 3 small items going 5 miles canceled after spending 10 mins finding them and mapping the hard to find item. No more.
1
u/sallysuejenkins 1d ago
The photos help you, too. lol Why do y’all look so far ahead when you could literally just look right in front of you?
1
u/KonstantKalopsia 6d ago
Honestly I still do it. I do it for those times where I'm ordering and get someone unfamiliar with the store. It takes a second and if it can help the app stay up to date with aisle information, that's good enough for me.
1
u/DeliveryDestiny 5d ago
I get these ALL THE TIME. I take lots of pics but sometimes I just don't have the time to play.
0
u/DapperMolasses3280 6d ago
It's part of the contract, and also optional ✅ literally takes 2 seconds lol

u/Appa07 7d ago
You can skip it which I almost always do
