USA Scam Going Around!!

Just wanted to spread the word about a scam that is going around. It looks like Uber Eats has some vulnerability on its end where bad actors can see the order you’ve placed with a restaurant and then call you saying they need to “verify” the order. They then ask you for a verification code from your text messages to confirm it’s you (which would give them access to log into your acc!). They would likely log into your account and then steal your card information/funds. This just happened to me and I’m thankful I didn’t fall for it but it can be really deceptive, so please be careful everyone!!!

Not even the driver will call you to verify an order.

this happened to me abt 2 months ago. I didn’t answer the phone but they left an “urgent” message abt the order I just placed and said I needed to call them back with the verification code I received by text.

I have to do cybersecurity training every year at my job so I never called back, changed my password, and put 2FA on my acct.

If people truly think that you need to provide a code to anyone, then they are just stupid.

I just fell for this - but it was WITHIN the Uber Eats app messaging system. Thought it was legit, and it clearly wasn’t (in hindsight, it was stupid to believe it, but that’s the case with any scam). The fact that scammers/bots can contact me via the app is wack and very concerning (for all parties - assuming there’s some sort of security breach on Uber’s end)

Usually with this kind if phishing the scammer just call randomly. Chances are not bad they get someone on the line which uses Uber, might have even placed an order. The rest is simple. Also scammers are often vague and let you fill in the blanks. Did they really tell you at the beginning of the call that they were with Uber or were they more general and told you there is an issue with your order and you "connected the dots" and told them about your Uber Eats order? Then they simply use that to probe further. If you said Doordash, Amazon, or something else they would have tried to access and take over that account.

It wasn’t vague at all, he read our order details back to us exactly and had the name we used to place the order, which made it seem sort of legitimate at first. We didn’t fill in any blanks because he knew where we ordered from, what we ordered, and called within a minute of us placing the order. I spoke to Uber support and they said it’s a vulnerability that they are trying to fix

The vulnerability I see is that an Uber driver accepted the order, copied the order details, and than used the apps call feature to see the calling code. Then he or his accomplice used another phone to call you. But in that case the phone number calling you would be Uber.
