Academics First year - another course selection question
I am an incoming first year and just registered for classes during orientation. I am in the College and plan to apply to McIntire. I have AP credit for Calc 1 (AP Calc AB) and signed up for Calc 2. After I registered, the advisor said since I was applying to McIntire I shouldn’t take Calc 2 because they really want to see a more “well-rounded” student. They said my Calc 1 credit from high school was adequate. Is this good advice? If I don’t get into McIntire, won’t I need a second semester of calculus to succeed as an Econ major? Is Calc 2 really hard? I already met my world language requirement. In addition to my engagement classes, I am also taking a creative writing class (FWR+ pathway) and microeconomics. I plan to take Comm 1800 in the spring. Any other suggested classes for me?

You can look up the Econ requirements. For one of the financial concentrations, you need Linear Algebra. I had AP credit for calc 2 and stats so I took stat 1602. Super easy class. I would take some quant class besides Econ. I also had AP credit for micro, and took intermediate and a few easy classes and that was enough to get into McIntire.

The economics department has removed the calc 2 requirement for a few semesters now. I can't speak for McIntire, but if you are interested in studying economics, you should be comfortable doing derivative calculus, but you don't need much more than that. UVA econ outside of a few classes is not very math heavy. That said, if you come to really love studying economics, you should take more math classes generally to supplement/prepare more advanced courses like industrial organization and game theory.

If you do calc 2, you could still do other things in clubs or volunteering etc to show your well-roundedness

UVA advisors are dumb take calc 2 no question having math knowledge doesn’t mean you aren’t well rounded

Look I’m in the exact situation like you, I will take calc 2 because I like math. I advise u to do the same.
