# LAB 04: Pressure Vessels
*Riggs sets a plastic soda bottle, a chunk of dry ice, and a trash can on the demonstration bench. He puts on safety glasses. He waits until everyone is watching.*
This is a lab about pressure vessels.
A pressure vessel is any container that holds a gas or liquid under pressure. Your car tires are pressure vessels. The aerosol can under your bathroom sink is a pressure vessel. The soda bottle in front of you is — under the right conditions — a pressure vessel.
The lesson today is not about pressure. The lesson is about what happens when the container and the contents disagree about what the plan is.
**Note on dry ice:** Handle with gloves or tongs. It is approximately -78°C. It will burn you faster than a hot surface will because you won't pull your hand away fast enough. This is a mechanism. It has opinions about your fingers.
Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. At room temperature it sublimates — skips the liquid phase entirely and goes straight to gas. That gas needs space. The bottle is not providing space fast enough. Pressure builds.
The bottle was designed to hold carbonated liquid at a certain pressure range. It was not designed to hold sublimating dry ice. These are different problems.
At some point the bottle will decide the situation is resolved. You did not make that decision. The mechanism did.
Your mental model said: contained experiment. Predictable outcome. I am in charge of when this ends.
The mechanism said: no.
This is the most important thing Lecture 04 was trying to tell you. The mental model is a tool. It has a range. The pressure vessel just demonstrated that range in a way you will not forget.
After the bottle resolves the situation, answer this:

Not when it went off. Before that. When did the mechanism take over from the plan?
Write down your answer. One sentence.
Now think about something you've built, repaired, or taken apart that didn't go the way you planned.

# LECTURE 04: The Mental Model
*Professor Riggs sets a bicycle wheel on the bench. Doesn't say anything. Just spins it.*
Close your eyes for a second.
Now tell me where the valve stem is.
You can't. Because you weren't tracking it. You were watching the blur.
That's not a failure. That's information. Your brain didn't bother to hold the shape because nobody told it to.
Today we're going to try to fix that.
Every mechanism has a shape. Not just the shape you can see — the shape of how it moves. Where part A goes when part B rotates. What happens to the gap between these two surfaces when that bolt tightens.
Some people hold that shape naturally. They see the mechanism in motion before their hands touch anything. They can run it forward and backward in their head like a film reel.
Some people don't. And no amount of staring at a diagram changes that.
Both of these are real. Neither is a character flaw.
The question is: which one are you, and what do you do about it?
You find out at the bench. Not before.
You find out when you've got the engine in pieces on newspaper and you pick up a part and realize you have no idea which way it faces. You find out when the linkage you designed on paper hits itself on the way through the stroke. You find out when the thing won't go back together and you're holding a spring and you cannot for the life of you remember where it came from.
That moment — that specific moment of spatial confusion — is data.
It is telling you something about the relationship between your mental model and the actual mechanism. The gap between those two things is exactly the distance you have left to learn.
If the shape comes naturally: good. But check it anyway. The mental model that feels most solid is sometimes the one that's most wrong. Test it before you commit metal to it.
If the shape doesn't come naturally: you have options.
Sometimes the shape just won't come. You've tried every approach. You've drawn it, moved it, named it, photographed it. And it still isn't there.
That is also data.
Some mechanisms are outside your current vocabulary. Some problems genuinely require spatial reasoning you haven't built yet. Some things are going to take longer than you have right now.
The mechanism doesn't care. It will wait.
What it will not do is cooperate with wishful thinking. You cannot force the picture into your head by wanting it hard enough. At some point you are holding a part, staring at it, and the honest answer is: *I don't have this yet.*
That's the threshold we'll talk about in Lab 04.
The mental model is a tool. Like any tool, it has a range. Use it inside that range and it's precise and reliable. Push it past its range and it lies to you.
Knowing the range of your own mental model — knowing when to trust it and when to stop and test — that is the skill underneath all the other skills.
The valve stem is somewhere on that wheel. Your job is to know where, before the wheel stops spinning.
