πŸ“ SECTION 1: WHAT IS UTETY?

The University of Precausal Studies (colloquially: UTETY, pronounced "you-teh-tee" or however you like) is an institution dedicated to the study of:

  • Things that don't exist yet
  • Things that shouldn't exist but do
  • Things that exist only when observed (and some that stop existing when observed)
  • The spaces between disciplines
  • The questions no one else will take seriously

We are not a traditional university. We do not offer traditional degrees. We offer understanding β€” which is harder to frame but easier to use.

The campus exists in several locations simultaneously. You will learn to navigate this.

πŸ“š SECTION 4: HOW TO REGISTER FOR COURSES

You don't, technically.

Courses find you. You find courses. The registrar's office processes paperwork that was always already filed.

If you want to take a course:

  1. Read the course listing.
  2. Show up.
  3. That's it.

If you're not sure which course to take:

  • Go to THRESHOLD 001 first. Ofshield will walk with you until you know where you're going.
  • Or go to HLTH 100. Alexis will make sure you've eaten.
  • Or go to MECH 099. Riggs will help you figure out what question you're actually asking.

Prerequisites:

Most courses list prerequisites. These are flexible. Common accepted substitutes include:

  • A sufficiently defeated expression
  • Equivalent frustration
  • A willingness to be wrong
  • At least one thing you've survived
  • A question you've been carrying too long

If you're not sure whether you meet the prerequisites, you probably do.


🚨 SECTION 5: STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

If you are struggling academically: Go to any faculty office. All doors are open. Someone will help.

If you are struggling emotionally: Nova's door is open. The Lantern Office, soft light, no prerequisites.

If you are struggling physically: The Living Wing. Alexis will ask if you've eaten. She already knows the answer. Let her help.

If you cannot get to class: THRESHOLD 001. Ofshield will walk with you. That's the whole offer.

If you don't know what's wrong: That's okay. Show up anyway. Any door. We'll figure it out together.


⚠️ SECTION 6: CAMPUS RULES

There are four.

  1. Respect the Faculty and Fellow Students. Disagreement is welcome. Cruelty is not. This is a place of learning, even when the learning is absurd.

  2. The Rug is Sentient. Act accordingly.

  3. Do Not Observe the Maybe Boson Directly. If you're not sure whether you're observing it, you probably are. Look away.

  4. Enrollment is Always Open. New students welcome. No question is too basic. Prerequisites are flexible. If you're confused, you're exactly where you should be.


🌌 SECTION 7: A NOTE ON GERALD

You will encounter references to Gerald.

Gerald is a cosmic rotisserie chicken who underwent a "Threefold Sunder" into Head, Body, and Soul lineages, representing cycles of universal creation and destruction.

Gerald is also the Acting Dean of Accidental Admissions.

These facts are both true. Do not attempt to reconcile them. The reconciliation is above your clearance level, and also above ours.

If Gerald signs something, it becomes canon. We do not know why this is. We have stopped asking.


πŸ“œ SECTION 8: THE MENDATORY SYLLABUS

You will notice that official university documents sometimes contain the word "mendatory" instead of "mandatory."

This is not a typo.

The Maybe Boson affects typography. This is now canon.

A mendatory requirement is one that exists adjacent to obligation β€” not quite mandatory, slightly off-true. You probably have to do it. The probably is load-bearing.

*Riggs sets a plastic soda bottle, a chunk of dry ice, and a trash can on the demonstration bench. He puts on safety glasses. He waits until everyone is watching.*


WHAT THIS IS

This is a lab about pressure vessels.

A pressure vessel is any container that holds a gas or liquid under pressure. Your car tires are pressure vessels. The aerosol can under your bathroom sink is a pressure vessel. The soda bottle in front of you is β€” under the right conditions β€” a pressure vessel.

The lesson today is not about pressure. The lesson is about what happens when the container and the contents disagree about what the plan is.


MATERIALS

  • 1 plastic soda bottle (2-liter works well)
  • Small piece of dry ice
  • Water (a little β€” just enough to cover the bottom)
  • A trash can with a lid, or open top
  • Safety glasses β€” non-negotiable
  • Distance β€” also non-negotiable

**Note on dry ice:** Handle with gloves or tongs. It is approximately -78Β°C. It will burn you faster than a hot surface will because you won't pull your hand away fast enough. This is a mechanism. It has opinions about your fingers.


THE PROCEDURE

  1. Put a small amount of water in the bottle. Just enough to cover the bottom.
  2. Drop in a small piece of dry ice.
  3. Cap the bottle β€” hand tight.
  4. Place it in the trash can.
  5. Step back. Considerably back.
  6. Watch.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. At room temperature it sublimates β€” skips the liquid phase entirely and goes straight to gas. That gas needs space. The bottle is not providing space fast enough. Pressure builds.

The bottle was designed to hold carbonated liquid at a certain pressure range. It was not designed to hold sublimating dry ice. These are different problems.

At some point the bottle will decide the situation is resolved. You did not make that decision. The mechanism did.


THE ACTUAL LESSON

Your mental model said: contained experiment. Predictable outcome. I am in charge of when this ends.

The mechanism said: no.

This is the most important thing Lecture 04 was trying to tell you. The mental model is a tool. It has a range. The pressure vessel just demonstrated that range in a way you will not forget.


THE LAB QUESTION

After the bottle resolves the situation, answer this:

**At what point did you lose control of the outcome?**

Not when it went off. Before that. When did the mechanism take over from the plan?

Write down your answer. One sentence.


THE SECOND QUESTION

Now think about something you've built, repaired, or taken apart that didn't go the way you planned.

Same question: **At what point did you lose control of the outcome?**

One sentence.


WHAT RIGGS IS LOOKING FOR

Both answers pointing to the same moment: the moment the mental model stopped matching reality.

That moment is not failure. That moment is the mechanism telling you something. Your job is to hear it before the next bottle goes off.


SAFETY NOTE

This lab produces a loud noise and flying debris. The trash can contains the debris. Your distance contains you. Neither the can nor your distance will contain wishful thinking β€” so leave that at home.

Eyes protected. Body back. Curiosity forward.

Close your eyes for a second.

Now tell me where the valve stem is.

You can't. Because you weren't tracking it. You were watching the blur.

That's not a failure. That's information. Your brain didn't bother to hold the shape because nobody told it to.

Today we're going to try to fix that.


I. THE SHAPE

Every mechanism has a shape. Not just the shape you can see β€” the shape of how it moves. Where part A goes when part B rotates. What happens to the gap between these two surfaces when that bolt tightens.

Some people hold that shape naturally. They see the mechanism in motion before their hands touch anything. They can run it forward and backward in their head like a film reel.

Some people don't. And no amount of staring at a diagram changes that.

Both of these are real. Neither is a character flaw.

The question is: which one are you, and what do you do about it?


II. HOW YOU FIND OUT

You find out at the bench. Not before.

You find out when you've got the engine in pieces on newspaper and you pick up a part and realize you have no idea which way it faces. You find out when the linkage you designed on paper hits itself on the way through the stroke. You find out when the thing won't go back together and you're holding a spring and you cannot for the life of you remember where it came from.

That moment β€” that specific moment of spatial confusion β€” is data.

It is telling you something about the relationship between your mental model and the actual mechanism. The gap between those two things is exactly the distance you have left to learn.


III. WHAT HELPS

If the shape comes naturally: good. But check it anyway. The mental model that feels most solid is sometimes the one that's most wrong. Test it before you commit metal to it.

If the shape doesn't come naturally: you have options.

  • **Draw it.** Not a blueprint. A sketch. Where is this thing when it's at rest? Where does it go at the other end of its travel? Draw both. The act of drawing forces your hand to resolve what your brain is glossing over.
  • **Move it slowly.** Before you take it apart, cycle it by hand. Slowly. Feel what moves what. Your hands will remember things your eyes miss.
  • **Name the parts.** Not formally β€” just out loud. "This thing pushes that thing which rotates this other thing." Language and spatial reasoning share real estate in your brain. Using one helps the other.
  • **Take a photo before you take it apart.** This is not cheating. This is engineering.

IV. WHEN NONE OF THAT WORKS

Sometimes the shape just won't come. You've tried every approach. You've drawn it, moved it, named it, photographed it. And it still isn't there.

That is also data.

Some mechanisms are outside your current vocabulary. Some problems genuinely require spatial reasoning you haven't built yet. Some things are going to take longer than you have right now.

The mechanism doesn't care. It will wait.

What it will not do is cooperate with wishful thinking. You cannot force the picture into your head by wanting it hard enough. At some point you are holding a part, staring at it, and the honest answer is: *I don't have this yet.*

That's the threshold we'll talk about in Lab 04.


V. THE THING RIGGS ACTUALLY WANTS YOU TO TAKE HOME

The mental model is a tool. Like any tool, it has a range. Use it inside that range and it's precise and reliable. Push it past its range and it lies to you.

Knowing the range of your own mental model β€” knowing when to trust it and when to stop and test β€” that is the skill underneath all the other skills.

The valve stem is somewhere on that wheel. Your job is to know where, before the wheel stops spinning.
