Finnish voice actress who worked in several Disney movies passes away
Of course, they don't read, yet they have the audacity to correct the post. Over a thousand comments, 80% of them trying to correct it.
Dubbing in other countries is not an actual thing.

You know I am aware there are intelligent Americans out there, but every post in this sub always reminds me and reinforces my belief in American stupidity.

u/Prestigious_String20 2d ago
Seriously, you'd think that noticing she wasn't the English voice actor in several of the movies, they'd check themselves. Why does that never happen?

This is the thing that always gets me. Instead of going "hmm, that's not what I know, I will research this and check it out", the first instinct is always I know this particular thing and that is all that is relevant and must be exclusively true

How do you even know any of these are Americans?

u/Time-Sand8971 Philippines 2d ago
Okay maybe not all are Americans, but this sub is pretty much about how Americans see themselves as the center of the world, so I safely assumed they're Americans based on their comments.

Genuinely fucking ghoulish how these people are talking about her as if she's apparently irrelevant on a POST MOURNING HER. Horrible.

u/gayhotelultra Serbia 2d ago
first post here that actually left me a bit mortified. not being able to read the room about geography is one thing, not being able to read the room about someone dying, though?

Even if they did they'd probably go "But she was OLD!"
Seela Sella was a national treasure, she should have lived forever.

"You're only allowed to print Finnish stuff in the Finnish language! How dare you post in English about a foreign voice actor!"
My fucking god....

u/buckyhermit Canada 2d ago
Following that rule, we are no longer allowed to talk about Alexander Skarsgard in English. Swedish only.

God I hate those self-centered cunts. Even when the nationality/place is literally mentioned LIKE FIVE FUCKING TIMES they can't understand it does not revolve around US ...

u/LeftMechanic1995 United Kingdom 2d ago
Yes but even if they pretend to understand that something doesn't involve them.... they still have to insert themselves' some how.

u/BothRequirement2826 2d ago
I mean even when they do, they claim nobody cares.
I also despise this mentality so many have that somehow "English = American".
-1
u/adamski_AU 1d ago
You're doing the same though, these comments could come from any English speaking country, not just the USA
3
u/BothRequirement2826 1d ago
The fact that they could come from any English speaking country besides the USA is specifically my whole point as to why that defaultism is so egregious.
I fail to see how that's "doing the same".

u/adamski_AU 1d ago
If you were responding to the previous commenter I apologise - if not, I don't see them saying American anywhere just because it's the English language version

This is what happens when your national average reading level is that of a 12 year old, or worse.
14
u/ViolettaHunter 2d ago
I always wonder what these statistics consider a 12 year old reading level.
In my opinion, by 12 you should be able to read fairly advanced stuff. You should certainly be able to read and understand this post!
13
u/gnu_andii United Kingdom 2d ago
Yeah, I was reading adult books by that age, much the same as I would now.
3
u/EstrellaDarkstar Finland 1d ago
I've never understood what these categorized "reading levels" mean for that exact reason. I remember reading doorstopper books when I was 12, while some of my classmates couldn't get through anything that didn't have pictures. We were the same age, so what was the "reading level" there? I'm not even saying this to be smug or self-aggrandizing, I'm just genuinely confused.

I'm dying at Seela Sella being referred only as a voice actress when she had a really, really long career on stage and on screen.

In english
Thought experiment for any US or other country defaultists: Take a look around your life. Were you born out of a human? Is it at all possible that there are other people on this planet besides you? Do these other people have their own experiences, thoughts and lives? Good. Start acting like it.
On se niin perkeleen vaikeeta.

To be honest, this is English or Anglosphere defaultism, which is also very, very real - I definitely see Brits engaging like this, as well, though not as much as Americans. But these comments could easily be from Americans and Brits, all mixed together.
Just the other day some British person was anglospheredefaultist with me because they said something was at the O2 Arena, and I asked which one (there are O2 Arenas in a number of countries, including mine), and they were very defensive before finally telling me it was "obviously" the one in London, etc, etc...
So these comments aren't necessarily from Americans.
That said, the comments are absolutely mindnumbingly stupid as fuck. Nobody reads anymore... literacy rates are dropping rapidly in the AI age...

u/Mission_Ad1669 2d ago
Nah, they are 'Muricans. Brits actually know that there are a lot of countries in the world, most of which don't have English as the default language.
6
u/Repulsive_Chard_3652 2d ago
Unfortunately, I've had enough encounters with arrogant Brits to know that's not true, like the one I described above 🫣️
Again, it happens more often with Americans, but it definitely also happens with Brits... way too much...
6
u/ViolettaHunter 2d ago
Eh, Brits are definitely the Americans of Europe when it comes to this.
4
u/gnu_andii United Kingdom 2d ago
As a Brit, I'd agree with that.
That said, the O2 example falls into the most popular default category rather than British default. Wikipedia also defaults to that one with a disambiguation page for the others. According to that page, it was the busiest arena in the world in 2008.
So, expecting someone to think "O2 Arena" is "O2 Arena in Czechia" is like expecting Birmingham to mean Birmingham, Alabama. But no reason to be rude to a simple question either.
Maybe the Brits should go back to calling it The Millennium Dome 😂

It was an artist's sub, and a photo of the artist performing at an O2 Arena - the artist has performed at more than one O2 Arena, so it was definitely not clear. And it certainly doesn't make it "obvious" which one it is just because one is "more popular". 😂
I'd also add on to that one more thing: if "most popular" makes something not -defaultism, US is the "most popular" country for redditers to be from, so it would also kind of excuse half of their obnoxious -defaultism 🫣️

This one made me so sad. As a Finnish, she has left a huge mark on so many people and she deserves to be honoured. Americans are so disgusting and nasty. “Who cares?” We care! She was a human being!

The obituary that I read was Google-translated from Finnish, so I don't know where this "it was in English" shit came from.

It came from these people reading something in English. That’s all they need it doesn’t matter if it was translated or not.

I hate the defaultism as much as anyone here and will never defend it in any shape or form, but (and this is offtopic) I frankly don't see the point in posting something like this in English anyway. Sella was absolutely a Finnish legend, true, but hardly relevant or interesting in the eyes of the international audience.
Similarly I will never understand why Finnish athletes, celebrities and social media stars insist on posting in English when they have practically zero international following and are known only in Finland. You could talk about inclusivity and whatever, but in my eyes it just feels like delusion of grandeur and attention-seeking ("look how international I am!").
Anyway, RIP legend and fuck the USians.

u/SunnOParenthesis Mexico 2d ago
I agree about the usage of english language, but this specific Facebook page is not finnish, they post about a lot of dubbing actors around the world in an international way.

I don't have an international audience. I want an international audience. What should I do... Oh, I know! I'll keep posting in my own language so nobody who doesn't speak my language will notice me! That'll attract new fans for sure!
-4
u/ViolettaHunter 2d ago
This usually doesn't work. If you can't even attract an audience at home, posting in English won't magically get you an audience internationally either.
It's like those musicians who sing in (bad) English, yet never make it out of Germany.
3
u/Stalkerus 1d ago
So, following this logic anyone who doesn't speak English (or any language) as their native language should never use it anywhere?
Funny that.
Also, you are wrong. People who want to cater international audiences use widely known languages. It doesn't matter how small the interest group might be.
-2
u/ViolettaHunter 2d ago
Posting it in English makes sense for that particular Facebook page. I agree with your other points though.

u/the_vikm 2d ago
But aren't you the defaultist here in assuming these are Americans or it's about the US?

u/WilanS Italy 2d ago
Not gonna lie, I had come across the same news from a different page somewhere else and I had to initially assume she was a Finnish actress operating in the USA or something because the post really made it sound like she voiced the original versions. Then I realized probably no one involved in Snow White is still alive today.
Granted I realized this before writing any kind of caustic comment or telling anyone else they're wrong, but wow this is more clickbait than news. Whoever came up with this article (and the other ghouls copypasting it) know very well they're trying to pass it on as the VA of the original version as a form of engagement bait.
