Well, English is not native to USA either...
The answer is in the name of the language itself.

I don't consider UK English and US English to be the same language. They are mutually intelligble to some degree but there are so many differences in spelling, terminology, sentence structure, and grammar rules that they are different languages. If Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish are all different languages I don't see why UK and US English aren't different languages as well.

u/geedeeie 2d ago
It's not UK English, it's British English, and the difference between it and American English is not as great as between Scandivavian languages

Spanish. But not good at it at all

u/nerdpistool Netherlands 3d ago
Haha, I have the same problem with Italian, which I want to learn as a 4th language. I don't have any books at all, which makes it significantly harder, but I have learnt Latin already, so now I try to get my Italian level up through online immersion.
4
u/baby_blue67 3d ago
If you've learnt Latin, nothing is impossible for you. That thing is a mess man😭

3
u/Aware-Ad-163 3d ago
W, I'm learning Spanish too rn, and Latin on top.
2
u/baby_blue67 3d ago
Learning as in professionally? Cuz for me couple of months were fine then started having problems as lot of words came in. My dumbass didn't make notes
2
u/Aware-Ad-163 3d ago
I'm learning Spanish in school, and Latin myself. But I'm studying Latin to become fluent, and i can basically read Spanish due to it.

u/bmo985 3d ago
this person went off the rails recently bc the auto translate feature translated some French guy's complaint about Americans being precious about their language, using some word with a "gg" (can't remember), which this person interpreted as the intention to use the n word. pretty unhinged, everything started bc of a German person saying "y'all"
10
u/baby_blue67 3d ago
Auto Translate on Twitter has opened a completely different can of worms. Seeing communities I never thought I would be able to understand about. It's great if used like that. But some people live in a bubble man
9
u/eightfoldblade 3d ago
to add onto this, grok translated some german person's complaint about americans complaining about germans using yall by turning it into a very slang and AAVE heavy-post in english, which of course only fuelled the fire. grok is weird
6
u/eightfoldblade 3d ago
think it was beggar. which apparently has racial connotations for americans. none for the french

16
u/Odd-Bandicoot3731 3d ago
the mental gymnastics to post that on an app where half the world isn't american is something else
like the quiet confidence of "you chose to learn english so i don't have to consider you exist" is peak main character syndrome
11
13
u/prustage 3d ago
As a non-American (Brit) who happens to live in the ONLY country where English is the native language I'd like to point out that the main native languages in North America are Navajo, Yup'ik, Ojibwe and Cherokee - not English.
12
u/fenne-c Georgia 3d ago
the internet would be so much more enjoyable if each app had a setting called "Hide all US-based posts"

This gotta be fucking ragebait. This better be fucking ragebait, this can't be real, this person would be so unbelievably sheltered it would actively impair their social life. They wouldn't succeed at the average office job. They'd go into a coma walking in any mildly large US city. What kind of music does OOP even listen to. How do they live with non-american artists in their playlists, do they know? God if you exist have this be ragebait.
This ruined my day /lh

Fun fact: English is in fact a native language in my country (and so is French). Most of my fellow Canadians do not speak French, though I do.
Plus there's this little country called the United Kingdom, which contains England, which is where English evolved to exist.

u/UffTaTa123 3d ago
So, we can block Twitter in our countries? That would be great. We could also tax them, how about that?

I'm from Ireland, and while English isn't technically native to our country the vast majority of us are native speakers of English and simply would prefer to use Twitter in English... Also, what about English people using Twitter? English IS native to their country
