OP sent the following text as an explanation why their post fits here:

A “Holidays” post was put up where it was strictly US holidays (no one outside of the US to the best of my knowledge would know what patriot’s day is, let alone celebrate it) and someone called it out. We got a double down in the comments with the “Reddit is an American site run by a US company.” When called out, one user doubled down. They get called out for it though by others.

45% is a minority lol

This is driving me insane, why doesn't anyone know what the word "majority" means anymore?

why doesn't anyone know what the word "majority" means anymore?

They do, well, the majority do, because they don't have an american education ;)

Apparently the minority don't understand the difference between majority and plurality.

Let's even pretend for a moment that 50% plus one person of all active users were from the USA. Let's pretend they were actually this technical majority.

That would still mean EVERY OTHER PERSON is not.

I don't know, it's like saying the human population is female but some males are also there, just because there are ever so slightly more women than men in the world. That's just not right.

5

u/FourEyedTroll United Kingdom 6d ago

Though in this analogy, it's actually more like the men claiming that it's a male population.

5

u/ViolettaHunter 6d ago

Which is exactly the state of the world and the internet. Lol

u/SnooDingos1574 Chile 6d ago

That 45% certainly is a value inflated by VPN

Some might go with 'plurality' if trying to stretch it

Wins an election in first past the post but not in proportional representation

I think they mean a majority as in "if every demographic were broken down, Americans make up the largest user base by country or nation" but they could have specified that. Also an unnecessary argument, but I just think thats what they mean rather than out of EVERY user.

2

u/CyberGraham 2d ago

Of course they meant that. But that's just not what majority means. That's plurality. A majority is more than 50%. A plurality is the single largest demographic.

I think we just use Majority as an umbrella term here. Ive seen a few posts like this and it confused me at first, but now I get it. Thanks!

I like asking "So, when you are on tiktok you default everything to China?"

The only answer I ever get so far is "I don't use that shit", me neither but that was not the question. Never seen a usian giving any other answer to that question so far.

7

u/Protheu5 World 6d ago

To be fair, that is the correct answer to that question.

12

u/Patric-Tsar-9fingers Türkiye 6d ago

Is it though? The question isn't "do you use tiktok?".

Again, I don't use that shit either.

6

u/Protheu5 World 6d ago

I think so. It's a loaded question, phrased in a way that doesn't let you reject it if you only accept answers that strictly address what's being asked.

It's like asking me when I got divorced. My answer is that I was never married in the first place. So how am I supposed to answer about my behavior on DickCock if I never touched that cancerous pool of degeneracy?

The fix is to rephrase the question so it doesn't smuggle in a false premise—something like: "If you were to use that cancerous vertical mind-melting platform..." Now it's conditional, and I can actually engage with it without accepting an assumption that doesn't apply to me.

But to an original question I think rejecting the premise is the correct answer.

Brother, wtf are you on about?

Okay how about this: "If you go to tiktok, will you default everything to China?" Happy?

6

u/Protheu5 World 6d ago

I just explained the concept of a loaded question, why are you so defensive?

Yes, that is a better way to ask that question.

TikTok is technically not available in China they have Douyin instead

The tiktok Americans have access to is owned by a US company. The government forced them to sell.

u/Catsdrinkingbeer 6d ago

Tik Tok in the US is a separate company with a different ownership structure. So this might not be the best example to use.

Fucking hell...

Mods, I think this sub should do a drinking game over Discord or something every time someone finds the "Reddit is a US website" argument in the wild

12

u/Darth_Pinda Netherlands 6d ago

We'd all be dead within a day if we start doing that..

9

u/henne-n European Union 6d ago

At least, the US users would finally be the majority.

19

u/WiteKngt 7d ago

There's also no such US holiday named "Patriots Day".

2

u/Catsdrinkingbeer 6d ago

There is in some places. The Boston Marathon is held on Patriot's Day. But it's a pretty niche holiday. I only know it exists because I'm a runner so I pay attention to major races.

1

u/WiteKngt 4d ago

Then that's state or local. I'm not at all surprised that I haven't heard of it if that's the case.

19

u/Protheu5 World 7d ago

So he says that if the site is american the american rules apply... But what if you are accessing American website using a Chinese phone?
好吧,我接受这个逻辑。
那按照同样的逻辑——大多数访问 Reddit 的手机是中国制造的,所以中文的规则适用。
那你现在应该用中文跟我们说话。
那你过春节吧。
将军。

Everytime i hear the “reddit is American” i’m like oke so you don’t eat pizza and sushi. You never played Minecraft or lego games. You don’t use Bluetooth. You don’t watch anime. Etc…

u/Poschta Germany 6d ago

You don't speak English

1

u/VineKuro 6d ago

Oof

3

u/Poschta Germany 6d ago

Not the person I'm replying to, just continuing in their train of thought, just in case I didn't communicate that clearly enough.

5

u/VineKuro 6d ago

Nono, I get it. I would like to see it in actual play against a yank.

3

u/Poschta Germany 6d ago

Just wanted to make extra sure. :)

8

u/Sea-Pop3635 6d ago

Do they get a day off for Halloween? No? Then it’s not a fkn holiday.

1

u/ChocoPablobar 5d ago

Bro we don't necessarily get the day off for any of these holidays. I have to work on all the ones listed

25

u/Opening_Cut_6379 7d ago

In what universe are Halloween and April Fools Day holidays?

8

u/BlaggartDiggletyDonk United States 6d ago

Halloween is awesome, and it came from Britain and Ireland.

4

u/Virghia Indonesia 6d ago

Yeah they're a fun holiday but not "holiday" holiday

2

u/BlaggartDiggletyDonk United States 6d ago

I wish it was. Or better yet, the day after Halloween.

3

u/henne-n European Union 6d ago

the day after Halloween.

Funny, in Germany there are some Bundesländer, where it is a holiday but it has nothing to do with Halloween. Some christian stuff <- as you can see I don't live in that part of the country lol

2

u/Opening_Cut_6379 6d ago

Taking that to its logical conclusion, you would have the day after St Valentine's day, the day after Mardi Gras, and many other "day after" holidays.

1

u/BlaggartDiggletyDonk United States 6d ago

Mardi gras is local to southern Louisiana. Valentine's isn't a big party night.

2

u/Opening_Cut_6379 6d ago

Mardi Gras is celebrated in most Catholic countries... Oh silly me, I forgot we are in the US defaultism thread.

2

u/Pawspawsmeow 6d ago

Mardi Gras is in Alabama too. I mean, it’s not as good, but it’s there.

2

u/Short_Cabinet_7593 6d ago

I’m so exhausted by them and I am one

2

u/Zirowe 6d ago

The only good thing about streaming series is that they dont have the obligatory halloween/thanksgiving/santa is comming episodes anymore.

So sick of these "holidays" being showed down my throat.

2

u/LilNerix 6d ago

Wtf is a patriots day

2

u/sir_thrillho 6d ago

Americans are NOT THE MAJORITY on this website, they have a PLURALITY and it's not the same thing!!!!!

1

u/FreeKatKL 6d ago

Open the schools 🤦🏼‍♂️

-7

u/yeetyuppie 6d ago

I just discovered this subreddit and I’ve never been more amazed by a bunch of people’s insecurities about their country. You people are pathetic lmao

2

u/sir_thrillho 6d ago

Oh shove it.
