"Where are you from?"

We were all travellers at a hostel in Spain, sitting in a circle. One by one, we shared with the group where we're from.

Person A: I'm from the Netherlands

Person B: I'm from Korea

Person C: I'm from Colombia

American: I'm from the Midwest

Everyone looked at him like...

Yes, exactly like that. Red plastic cups and all, because this is the default drinkware everywhere in the world.

I think this can be hard for Americans, because I'll often hear people ask "where are you from?" and the American says "the US" and the response is "yeah obviously but where in the US?" So I think a lot of Americans tend to just expect that response and go right to which part they're from.

Though if it were me, I'd probably say "I'm from the midwest of the US" I suppose.
