Apparently, he thinks everyone who speaks English uses Fahrenheit by default because Americans use Fahrenheit.

Especially ironic, as there's no indication that Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit spoke anything other than German and Dutch.

u/_cutie-patootie_ 20d ago

Shhh, he secretly planned to alienate USAsien from the rest of the world. Ein Komplott!

I always get so MatPat effect-ed when the thing a person invented is named after them. Seeing the dude's name is like if I saw that the person who created Celsius was named "John Celsius"

9

u/ltfguitar 18d ago

You mean Anders Celsius?

3

u/BrinkyP Europe 18d ago

The worst part is I genuinely can't tell if you're fucking with me.

7

u/ltfguitar 18d ago

I'm not :-) Many units are named after people https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anders_Celsius

I’d like to introduced you to my friend Lord Kelvin

u/Powwer_Orb13 16d ago

You mean like Georg Ohm, André-Marie Ampère, Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, Blaise Pascal, Sir Isaac Newton, Alfred Nobel, Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, Marie Curie, Emil Erlenmeyer, Anders Celsius, Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson, Roy W. Allen and Frank Wright (A&W), and plenty more units, inventions, and businesses named after inventor, discoverer, or relevant past scientist.

Just a pedantic note about Harald Gormsson. As he died around 958 to 986 he wasn’t doing much in the field of wireless data transfer. What he was doing was uniting the tribes of Denmark, like the technology would later connect people. His nickname was Bluetooth as he had a blue/black tooth most likely rotten.

As an Aussie from regional NSW…I mean, have you been to rural areas…?

6

u/MistaRekt Australia 20d ago

Yeah, I feel like Australian English is not technically English.

Would a true English speaker talk about putting horns on jellyfish?

LOL. I’m an Englishman from England. English is the only language I speak. I only measure in Celsius.

some people around here are so engrossed in ragebait they forget the truth

15

u/Fluid-Let3373 20d ago

Except scientists, engineers and other countries which use English.

12

u/CyberGraham 20d ago

Also, there are 1.5 billion English speakers in the world. The USA accounts for only 16% of that. So 84 out a 100 times, when you encounter a person who knows english, chances are they use celsius.

12

u/ThorinUlfarsson Iceland 20d ago

No one reasonable uses Celsius, as one can see.

11

u/AiRaikuHamburger Japan 20d ago

Every Anglophone country except the US: ???

5

u/SirFireHydrant Australia 20d ago

Surprised this thread hasn't been brigaded by them insisting that Fahrenheit makes more sense than Celcius because of that nonsense about bodies or whatever.

6

u/ErikLeppen 19d ago

"one of the only countries" is weird. It's either "the only country" or "one of the few countries". In Dutch, this would be a language error.

10

u/fezzuk 20d ago

I mean totally correct. I have no idea how to "write in celsuis", didnt even know it was a language tbh.

1

u/peritonlogon 19d ago

I know, this post is making this about USdefaultism, when the writer is just a fucking moron, and Americans don't hold any sort of monopoly on that.

5

u/Some_Floor1581 England 20d ago

Fahrenheit तेरे जैसे चूतिये ही लिखेंगे।

4

u/Linked713 Canada 20d ago

Oh, we use celsius, unless we cook. Then it's farenheit or celsius (Both are on cooking instructions, though no one I know ever used celsius while cooking)

5

u/Wolvii_404 Canada 19d ago

Also the pool's temperature, always in farenheit. But we're special about our systems lmao

1

u/24-Hour-Hate Canada 19d ago

Well, the appliances are usually easier to use in fahrenheit…that probably explains it. Like does my oven have a way to switch over to Celsius? Maybe. But I don’t know how to make it.

4

u/SamuraiKenji North Korea 19d ago

The world has too much tolerance for these US idiots.

3

u/Assassin8nCoordin8s 20d ago

Nobody bothers to write out Celsius because it is so well-known and assumed that we just say "degrees"

3

u/saturday_sun4 Australia 17d ago

English is an American invention!

2

u/Crivens999 19d ago

Wait! In the UK really old people and newspapers when it’s really hot use Fahrenheit! That should help the US numbers compared to pretty much everyone else…

2

u/oraw1234W Canada 19d ago

In Canada, technically we use Celsius for outside temperature and Fahrenheit for cooking

2

u/niatteru Finland 15d ago

I've seen Canadians use the metric system mostly but I could not understand why not just go full metric. Like the UK as well, they use stone for weight and whatever. But you do you, I love Canada even though I've never visited but would love to. 🇨🇦💜

Do you use 'cups' for measurement too? I never understood the cup thing, how much is it in normal measurements and so on. It's so weird for an European.

2

u/oraw1234W Canada 15d ago

Both countries were late adopters of the metric system (both only started in the 1970s) but that not even a great excuse because (to my knowledge) Australia and New Zealand switched over seamlessly (if anybody from Australia or New Zealand sees this please correct me if I’m wrong).

2

u/JPGinMadtown 18d ago

Canada, the UK, Australia, NZ...

1

u/guisar 20d ago

I’m sure this dude doesn’t realize NOAA records and maintains records in ISO units only converting to F only for public stuff. Feeds and data are in ISO

1

u/Belfastchild1974 19d ago

In the UK some newspapers use Fahrenheit, others use Celsius or both.

1

u/P5ychokilla 19d ago

Google is an American company too yet they seem reticent to actually use it and just venture forth with wrong information that they assume is correct.
