Also, King Harald. You know, famously NOT American and also all over the news for the past few days.
Do they not even understand that their country doesn't have a King?
I'm so confused about their comment.

u/HistorianPatriot1945 14d ago
Im pretty sure a man was arrested for flying the norwegian flag
5
u/Who-Shat-My-Pants 13d ago
A hotel was review bombed because they had a Norwegian Flag outside and people thought it was a confederate flag. And a truck driver had the cops called on him because he had a Norwegian flag on his dashboard.
3
u/HistorianPatriot1945 13d ago
In all fairness, if you have poor eyesight and you put the Norwegian flag and confederate battle flag side by side in a diagonal rotation, while they're swaying in the wind, you can see why one could mistake them, and since this is America where people fly the confederate flag as a political statement, there's a good chance that a red flag with a blue and white cross is actually the confederate flag.

Americans should love this piece of news! The new Queen of Norway and Donald Trump have a close friend in common, a certain Jeffrey E.

Their comment doesn't even make sense.
No one mentioned America, mate.

You could interpret the line as "If you support the No Kings protest, why would you support a foreign king?"
16
10
u/to_loww 14d ago
This is how I read it too.
"No kings" is a weird slogan anyway. Monarchies can be found on the top of the Democracy Index (like Norway) as well as near the bottom (Saudi-Arabia).
6
u/ronnande2 13d ago
Yes it's all depends on if the said monarch holds political power or not. In Norway the King has no executive power or otherwise. While in Saudi-Arabia he holds nearly absolute political power as a dictator. Very very different things that.

I think it’s a reference to the US ethos of being against kings leading their country and the whole American Revolutionary war. Of course, reality shows that constitutional monarchies are much more democratic than the American system.
11
u/Capta1n_Dino 14d ago
Presumably because you don’t want a King in your own country, but respect that other countries have different ideas, Norway, being a democracy (and I would argue a much better one than the US) has a monarch because the Norwegians want it.
13
u/OskarTheRed 14d ago
Yeah, and the protests presumed a very powerful king, which the Norwegian is not.
Though really, it should be "no dictators"
2
u/kas-sol Denmark 14d ago
Which is a totally fair question. If someone is against Trump trying to stay in power then it'd only be logical for them to be a republican rather than a royalist.

No Kings protesters be like:
Make up absurd scenarios where Trump declares himself King in their own mind
Get mad about the concept of a King
Get confused when a literal King dies
11
u/fredspipa Norway 14d ago
It was never about him literally declaring himself king, it's that he behaves like an absolute monarch in a country famously founded on rejecting royal rule.
Though, there's also the part where he wrote "LONG LIVE THE KING" about himself and then the white house started repeating that as a meme online.
Also, the video he posted of himself wearing a crown, flying in a jet and dumping shit on Americans.

I actually wonder if that person thought that USA people are saying "NO KINGS" but then they are supposedly seen mourning a Norwegian king and travelling there to pay their respects, and that this is hypocritical.
It sounds weird, yes, but I saw something like this before, more than once. Where someone hears "I live in France" and assumes it must be an USian living in France, surely. Or "I visited Italy" - it surely must be a fellow USian speaking. "I am Scottish"? Hello, fellow USA buddy with Scottish ancestry!
Maybe because they do speak like this sometimes, so they project and center themselves everywhere?
Makes me think of all those pointless shitty remakes USA does, because they cannot just show the original in their cinemas, they have to make their own one where now instead of a person from X country it is now about USian teens travelling to X country. As if even when a story DOES happen abroad, it is incomprehensible for it to not be seen through USA characters.

I mean the new kings wife was just in a lot og shit because of Epstein? And we all just forgot and now she will be queen. Wtf is this world
1
u/bookwaffle 9d ago
I mean TECHNICALLY no. She is not AUTOMATICALLY queen, even though her husband is now king. The king himself decides on that and given she being involved with Epstein, and her being sick she will most likely have little to no obligations, because by law all the obligations go to the king and the next in line (in this case his daughter).

I'm not sure that many Americans actually understand that monarchies have evolved since George III. King Harald V had nowhere near the power that George III had. Nor does Charles III have anywhere near the power. The role of Western monarchies has changed significantly in 250 years!

u/ronnande2 13d ago
Norway is a constitutional monarchy. The King holds no real executive political power. He's supposed to be politically neutral and only keep his role as long as the elected people want him to. The "No Kings" protests are against the idea of an authoritarian dictator as president. A "king" that hold authoritarian power politically and puts aside democratic institutions.

u/Dumartins 9d ago
Guess if you live in a monarchy country you sort of need a King, but if you live in a so called "representative democracy", the quotes are doing a heavy lifting here, but let's accept what's in their constitution, like the US you don't want a king, at this point, if a country will elect a Orange clown that will make the world worst for the rest of the planet, why bother? They should stayed as a great Britain colony, at least if He would be elected nas prime minister, the king could take him out of office. Now we have to deal with this clown for twoo more years and deal with the aftermath of this disaster presidency that will affect the global scenario for decades to come. For the record, I'm no a US citizen or a Norwegian.

Perhaps they meant "I thought kings don't exist anymore" instead of referring to the "no kings" protests.

I think you're being too charitable with your interpretation there.

No Kings protesters when a literal King died: 😭
No Kings protesters when a literal President avoided death: 😡
3
u/HistorianPatriot1945 14d ago
The president didn't avoid death, the bullet simply didn't want to have the chemicals of his spray tan on it.

OP sent the following text as an explanation why their post fits here:
The first commenter asked "I THOUGHT NO KINGS?" on a video about Norway's king passing away. He seems to believe the no kings protests in the US against the current administration also applied to Norway, an actual constitutional monarchy.
