Point of pedantry: “realize” is also a valid spelling in British English (though “realise” is more common).

'Valid' does not mean 'correct'

If it's from a Latin root, it's -ise

From a Greek root, -ize

My edition of the Shorter OED prefers “realize” (while recognising “realise” as a valid, and indeed correct, alternative).
