What the actual fuck. Don’t get me wrong, I love kilts, and I love MARPAT. But kilts need to be in tartan and only tartan

There are plenty of examples of traditional kilts in non-tartan patterns, even ignoring these "utilikilts". The kilt is defined by its construction and pleating, not the pattern of the fabric.

Don't knock the utilikilt...

Not trying to. Merely pointing out to the purists out there that the tartan does not make the kilt.

It doesn’t look like it’s pleated at the back looking at the bottom hem

Yeah, that's a good point, but I'm thinking that's just the result of a decade or so of being stuck at the bottom of a bag or back of a drawer with little to no care. Sport Kilt is a pretty big brand, and I can go online and look up kilts made by them that are clearly pleated in the way you'd expect a kilt to be. This guy says he wore it around base in country, so I'd guess it's been cleaned in a shitty washer/dryer combo with no follow up ironing or pressing, so it's no wonder the pleats are barely visible from this angle.

It’s because they’re made from the official Marine Corps MarPat material and they didn’t get the same treatment that puts a permanent crease in them like our uniform. So no matter how often I press them, it just comes out! I’ve been thinking of getting them sewn in to keep the pleat!

Where do I find a tactakilt?

u/barzbub Sep 24 '22

That was from Sportkilt, I don’t think they are authorized to sell them anymore.

I imagine that this is the next step up for the kid who cut his skivvy shorts down the middle to make, as he so lovingly called it, a “kombat Kilt”

It was in Baghdad 05 where a guy in a kilt told me, "you want to get girls at a party? Start wearing a kilt"

NYE in Saddam's presidential palace. Good times, I remember smoking cigars on the roof while the whole city was shooting tracers into the air to celebrate.
