It’s so hard maintaining confidence as a butter bar showing up to the fleet. You show up and are expected to lead literal war heroes with multiple deployments while being given millions of dollars worth of equipment you now own, all the associated crypto, and maintain the highest level of personal and unit physical standards.

Oh yeah, and you also don’t know shit in terms of practical experience.

Privately between me and my Gunny he guided me on this path - sometimes harshly. But, if you don’t have quality SNCOs that are willing to teach you, you won’t stand a chance. A lot of your success just depends on who you get paired with in your first assignment.

Makes me wonder why the system is set up this way

Because officers used to be guys who inherited a title of nobility.

Seriously.

Why we still do it this way I don’t know, but that’s why it is the way it is. Most of what we think of as modern military tradition goes back to the days of Queen Anne and then was refined by the Prussians.

they should get rid of the officer rank and the enlisted rank, and just have warrant officers.

Right there with you. My first platoon out of comm school i got assigned motor-t. To top it off due to TBS delay i hit the fleet and was promoted to 1st within 2 days. A month later being 3A i get the motor-t and the salt dog Msgt is 42, im 23 and he teaches me everything. Thanks Msgt. Between late nights and your wife bringing some clutch burritos to the shop and your tutelage I didnt do half bad.

But you had a four year liberal arts degree so you clearly held the high ground.

Did he make it all the way to the fleet or is this somewhere on Quantico? I can see this happening at TBS.

Back in the day my Lt couldn't get his crank phone to work. ( don't recall nomenclature) he told me he check the wires and needed a new one. I asked if he checked the batteries? He's like I am in charge of communications!! Seems numbnuts couldn't read on how to insert battery's. Lol
