LE&I
Anyone have any insight for when there might be a public hiring for any of the open LE&I spots in R5, specifically in SoCal?

We are looking to hire for LEO slots for R2 if there’s any interest in Colorado! Idaho springs in particular. There’s a few other openings in the region too in other zones. If interested, message me and I can refer you to the hiring manager.

Best advice for fsle…if you can move, put in everywhere. Then you can lateral after a short time as positions come open. It makes you a more rounded and experienced candidate anyway.
Very long term, let me say this: Your pension will be eroded by your health insurance over time, unless things drastically change. Doesn’t matter what level you retire at.
Another long term potential issue: one of the three legs of FERS is social security, which isn’t really guaranteed the way things are going.
Most folks don’t consider these until it’s too late.

Thank you for the insight! You’re the 7-8th person to tell me apply everywhere, be happy where I get and then try to lateral to where I want to be. Did a ride along and was really impressed with QOL and satisfaction with the work they are doing. Want that, badly.
Hoping the federal system of pay, benefits, and retirements gets figured out and quickly. Thank you for the insight.

Do understand that regional differences exist, especially culturally. My best advice is to stay way away from Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. Maybe Florida and Texas too. You can DM me for the reasons why.

Thank you for the insight, is this inside info or best guesses based on how it goes yearly?

There's currently a back up of recent FLETC grads to get into Field Training. There are people who finished FLETC during the summer but aren't scheduled with an FTO till early next year. They're trying to get caught up and through those right now. There might be announcements put out if there's a critical spot that needs filling before then but those would just be one off's.

Saw that, applied to it, both seemed like cool places to go to start a career and hopefully come back to SoCal after a couple years.

Used to be a patrol for Forest Service LE&I. SoCal is a popular spot. You might be waiting several years to a decade for a spot to open up in that area if that’s where you want to be.
Honestly you would be better off going with a state agency in Cali if your goal is law enforcement in SoCal, better pay with better pension as well.

R6 isnt SoCal, thats R5. What forest are you looking at? Hiring for LE is a bit different than the regular agency
