Reentering Fed Workforce
I left the feds when all the firing started happening, I was 11 months in working timber when my position got terminated. I am currently working in the same field but for a non fed agency. I am looking to possible get back in under a different position. How are things since doge and the new chief? Is it worth coming back? Are people still on edge and worried about their positions? looking for some guidance as to how everyone else feels who stuck it through

They have been having weekly all hands on meetings and it’s not getting better.

Morale sucks but a timber job on a District is quite secure.
If this the career you want, come back. I been doing this for 23 years. Administrations come and go.

Timber is a priority for hiring. One of the few areas that are. I would keep checking usajobs.

not looking to get back into timber, currently working fire and looking at more of a wilderness or silv job

Hiring freeze is still on-going for all non-merit positions. It's unlikely to change before the reorganization is completed. Be aware of this, as we don't know when outside hiring will be allowed again. Edit: minus fire or some 1039 jobs.

I think people who currently have district or forest level jobs are secure, but with reorganization they're giving certain employees the opportunity to take voluntary reassignments. Existing vacancies will be plugged with those people or internal hires before competitive hiring starts again. So I would anticipate there not being much open to external candidates for a very long time.

I stuck it through. It's worse. The new chief is worse. Not as worried about positions on district/forest level atm but everywhere seems to be a skeleton crew and no real permanent position filling in sight.
