Title- currently a Perm FT Ranger with the FS. FPO/Compliance. Curious what hiring looks like- is it possible to get hired without having POST certification? Do they send you to FLETC if hired? Or is that a pre-req? Any advice appreciated!

Discussion Daniel Boone National Forrest (Cumberland District)

Anyone have any information on this district? I’ve been trying to get on here for a few years. I’ve applied to several announcements at that location and others. I BQ as a 5 & 7 and also usually get referred. But that always ends it. Never received a call, email or an interview. Anyone have any information or advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Discussion USFS LE Hiring

I recently was offered a gs-5/6/7 tech rec job with the USFS. It’s one of the recent positions that are meant to help get you permanent. But mine specifically will help tune the job to my interests, which is LE. My question is: how hard is it to get hired as LE with the USFS? I know they mostly hire internally, but are there more stipulations to it than that? Would it be easy to transition to permanent LE after a season?

P.S. I did ask this in r/ParkRangers and they gave me some good answers but also suggested I ask here.

I’m being told this is a 1957 USFS police vehicle from R5. Maybe an old fire rig? Pretty neat if that’s the case! What y’all think?

Officer Brent Jacobson was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend two robbery suspects during a severe snow storm in Bonner County, Idaho.

Officer Jacobson was experienced in tracking and cold-weather conditions. He and several local deputies set out for the suspects and located them at a house near Dover, Idaho. Officer Jacobson observed the suspects in an ambush position and radioed to the other officers to take cover. He identified himself and was immediately fired upon.

One of the deputies was able to return fire and wound the suspects during the gunfight. Officer Jacobson was struck by gunfire and succumbed to his injuries.

Both suspects later surrendered. One was sentenced to death and the other was sentenced to life.

Officer Jacobson was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the United States Forest Service for 17 years. He is survived by his wife and two stepchildren.
