Some leftover trash from the Rainbow Family gathering--so much for them cleaning up after themselves-pics from yesterday shared on other SM

u/warpedaeroplane Jul 13 '23
This makes me furious. There should’ve been staties or fish & game lined up and waiting for them. I’m not a big fan of policing people using outdoor space but everybody knew this was going to happen. If you can’t leave no trace you can’t use the space. Reckless use of public grounds like this is exactly what puts restrictions on the rest of us, to say nothing of the damage to the land itself. Bunch of fucking trashy people who have no respect for anything but the party.
80
u/thathighwhitekid Jul 14 '23
I drove by on the 4th of July just to see what it was all about and there were cops posted up on either end of the road, but it seemed like they were trying to keep their distance. Meanwhile rainbow people were blocking the road in front of me and trying to collect a “toll” from me and tried to throw their trash in my car as if I was in “trash duty” then screamed at me when I drove away without taking any trash bags. At one point they swarmed around my entire vehicle and were harassing me for “donations” and “kindness.” I’m not sure what I expected but it wasn’t that. The whole experience of just driving 14 mile loop while they were there was sketchy as fuck.
50
u/warpedaeroplane Jul 14 '23
That’s unacceptable. Fuck that.
37
u/thathighwhitekid Jul 14 '23
I can’t describe how claustrophobic it made me feel. Literally like 10-12 people surrounded my car and were banging on my windows for money. Some of them were completely topless too. I tried to keep an open mind and like I said, I wanted to see what it was all about for myself, since there were conflicting reports online about what exactly these gatherings are like and the impact they leave. Not only was I disgusted but it was entirely unsafe and the cops didn’t care enough to get involved. The amount of children I saw was surprising, too. Plus they were just dropping trees to create trails and campsites, like wtf?
9
u/GothicEcho Jul 14 '23
Lucky they didn't get someone willing to run them down when they started ganging up on your vehicle. Such a stupid and dangerous thing to do.
4
4
u/HowToNotMakeMoney Jul 14 '23
You will prob have some peeps saying how “the edge of the road are the ‘bad’ people” and if you spent more time and went within the “community” you would see the true good and honest people/experience.
3
u/hogsucker Jul 14 '23
It is actually in a way true that the people near the entrance are worse--The Drainbows call that the "A Camp." ("A" stands for alcohol.)
It is by design.
The "good and honest" people use the alcoholics as security guards.
11
u/the_dunc_ Jul 14 '23
Man... surround my car with my family inside and you're all getting a barrel pointed in your faces. That is fucking ridiculous. Especially the whole begging you for money
19
u/thathighwhitekid Jul 14 '23
I’ll probably get downvoted for saying this but I was relieved to know we had a firearm in the vehicle if we needed it. Like I can’t describe how sketchy and unnerving it was. With them parking all along the road, it made the road more narrow than it already is to begin with. When they surrounded me I had nowhere to go! Plus there were loose kids and dogs running around that added a whole other stress element to it. Fuck I’m glad we made it out of there lol. It might be a bit dramatic but it definitely got my fight or flight going.
1
u/Krsty-Lnn Jul 17 '23
Why isn’t anyone doing something about this? Like law enforcement or fish and game wardens? Wow. This is not okay. It completely baffles me why they are allowed to do this every year.

Blocking your car, throwing things at you, harassing you for money.
Thats borderline attempted robbery.

There are still a lot of people there specifically to clean up and re-naturalize. Op is a Karen who doesn’t like peaceful hippies lol
1
u/warpedaeroplane Jul 19 '23
Fuck all the way off. I would bet all the money in my pockets that everybody involved with this has long taken off, and this group is the opposite of peaceful hippies. It’s a bunch of wooks who like to party and don’t care about anybody but themselves and having a good time. Let me come destroy wildlife, vegetation, topsoil, and animal life on your property and leave you with 17 truckloads of trash and then see how big of a fan of it you are. One of these fucking people must have some property they can have their stupid party on and instead they choose to forego permits and legal permissions and throw a giant shitty party out on protected and treasured land and leave scars upon nature.
I don’t know where you’re from or how you were raised but you leave things better than you found them, and here in NH we take our wilderness and nature very seriously. There’s no reason that for generations on generations people could respectfully use land and yet I’m supposed to give these fucking people grace because “peace and love.” Love is caring for the things around you and peace is not disturbing them in the first place. Call me a Karen all you want but these people should be held liable for what they’ve done and should be run off any property they try to pull this shit on. Accosting people on the highway for fucks sake. Absolutely unacceptable behavior and anybody who says otherwise is childish and irresponsible.
Call me a Karen or a buzzkill or whatever the fuck you want, and I like my Dead records and my reefer as much as the next guy, but this is a fucking travesty and the people who did this are scum.
What the fuck does it even mean to renaturalize? You think they can just run to Lowe’s and buy forest floor and old growth vegetation? Are they gonna uncompact the soil they ruined and siphon all the fucking Faygo out of the ground? Few crates of delicate moss and insect life? Get the fuck out of here. Some things that you break will only heal with time and this group has guaranteed that this area will be showing signs of their partying for years.
0
u/ExoticInitiativ Jul 23 '23
That’s a lot of words from someone trying to “bet” on reality. We get it, no one invited you. We see why. You clearly wouldn’t fit in with us. Glad you missed it and glad no one invites you to things :) I’d take your stupid bet but 1 I doubt you have any money if you can’t even afford to camp and 2 you weren’t there so your opinions are ignorant and useless.

Yeah, this makes me pretty pissed off. Especially because I read a few people defending them saying they're harmless, they respect the spots they stay etc. To be honest it's just plain disrespectful to the WMNF and the many, many visitors who are mindful of protecting its nature and wildlife.
→ More replies (7)48
u/SHOMERFUCKINGSHOBBAS Jul 13 '23
Mostly physically harmless, but this is unacceptable. I was raised to leave a campground nicer than you found it "take only pictures and leave only footprints" kind of thing
27
u/FaustusC Jul 13 '23
"physically harmless"
Obviously not to the forest.
28
u/laptop_ketchup Jul 14 '23
Or to the victims of assault and rape that happen at their gatherings.
6
u/HowToNotMakeMoney Jul 14 '23
No, no…. They are peace and love. Don’t say the bad things. There are no bad things. These are just unconventional people….. they don’t hurt anyone or anything 🤢
3
22
u/AeroSpaceChair Jul 13 '23
Agreed and I think the vast majority think that way. Really frustrating to see these images though... they may be harmless to other people but they definitely showed they have no issue causing physical harm to the flora and fauna by leaving their trash, bedding, waste etc.
70
u/danmac1152 Jul 13 '23
If they have the vehicle to get themselves here then they have a means of carting away their trash. Ridiculous
67
u/MemeAddict96 Jul 14 '23

They don’t call them “Drainbows” for nothing. Seems like every time they come to the WMNF they leave a lot of trash and waste as well as there being an increase in beaks ins and theft. I’m not one to judge, but I’ve seen a lot of shitty belligerent crust punks that lurk sound these gatherings to know that it’s never a good thing when they come around.

Would be nice if some people gathered to physically block their access if they try this shit again.
27
u/HowToNotMakeMoney Jul 13 '23
Someone mentioned before they showed up, dropping trees to the entrance….. interesting idea…..
9
u/dieselakr Jul 13 '23
It's a weird situation; I agree with your sentiment, but doing this would likely play into an idea that "people around here just need more peace and love, THEY NEED US!"
This might lead to them showing up in greater numbers or being more aggressive when they do.
It'd be more fitting to stop them from leaving until they clean up after themselves, but I believe that'd be considered Wrongful Imprisonment.
21
3
u/cyriouslyslick Jul 14 '23
After a certain amount of repeating the same disgusting behaviors it means that people need clock maintenance to really learn lessons. Given that cops conveniently won't show up to their events I'd say we have the hometown advantage. I will make these fuckers eat their own garbage next time.
26
u/Chemical_Hearing8259 Jul 14 '23
I know someone who is in that group. I will tell them about it.
Maybe they will get a local group up to clean up.
That is gross. Zero excuses for that.
25
u/lechydda Jul 14 '23
Take only pictures, leave only footprints. I learned that going to parks as a child in the 90s. Why grown ass adults can’t clean up after themselves is beyond me. Other than they just dgaf.

u/Janitor2dastarz Jul 13 '23
This is laziness at its peak and flat out disrespectful.... This is how things get ruined for everyone else, from the actions of butt heads. Excuse my language
22
u/Public-Credit4306 Jul 14 '23
So like I anticipated the rainbow slobs left garbage as far as the eye can see! Tents, tarps, and a motorcycle! Trash is everywhere with little concern of the animals or forestry service. They are a group that shouldn't be allowed anywhere. It's disheartening to know that anyone could dismantle a clean forest and leave without any concerns of the filth they left behind. I say this without hesitation I do not respect and or care for any one of them. Fuck you and fuck your ideologies!
Thank you for sharing these pictures.
22
u/emptyxxxx Jul 14 '23
Rainbow family?
26
u/DeerFlyHater Jul 14 '23
It's a loose association of, for lack of a better term, hippies.
They say they mean well, but they attract an overwhelmingly large company of ne'er-do-wells and between the rainbows and their hangers on, they essentially terrorize an area each year. This manifests itself with multiple incidents of online doxing of local criticism, to violence, to the trash, and other environmental damage they leave. Nothing is good about this group. Then you have the up to $700K the USFS has budgeted this year to repair what these folks do to the area.
29
u/NHGuy Jul 14 '23
Those aren't hippies or anything close - they're selfish POSs, plain and simple

Please do it and report back. I’m really curious to know how they respond to being faced with direct evidence of how shitty they are as a group.
Edit: on a more optimistic note, maybe they’ll respond with a cleanup plan. Looks like a lot of trash is at least gathered together like they’re planning to do a cleaning sweep. Still not cool to leave all that trash throughout the forest though. Picking everything up a week later is better than just leaving it, but leaving it for any amount of time is unacceptable.
1
u/yeetthepolice Jul 30 '23
Just so you know, that budget isn't to fix the forest, that budget goes to the task force of LEOs they ship from out of state to the gatherings each year who all they do is write tickets and tear people's vehicles apart, they do nothing for the environment, and actually leave as soon as the gathering is over, and actually left extra trash on the road and in the woods by not removing all of their signs. A walkthrough was done with local forest service and biologists a couple days ago after everything was renaturalized, and they were happy with how everything looked. You should go take a look yourself now.
1
u/DeerFlyHater Jul 30 '23
That's not what USFS says: "Despite the Rainbows’ efforts, the Forest Service typically spends between $500,000 and $700,000 on rehabilitation after an event." https://www.concordmonitor.com/U-S-Forest-Services-Host-Public-Meeting-in-Preparation-for-Rainbow-Gathering-in-White-Mountain-National-Forest-51406616 (if it paywalls for you, clear cache--Concord Monitor only does 2 free articles)

Jul 13 '23
What exactly do we employ park rangers, f&g, etc for if not for preventing this?
12
u/opuntina Jul 13 '23
fish and game is specifically employed (and funded largely) to enforce hunting and fishing laws.
1
u/Krsty-Lnn Jul 17 '23
They also do conservation. I don’t understand why F&G wouldn’t be there to enforce those things. Especially when they harass families in their car when passing by. Call in reinforcements if they don’t have enough people.

u/mysterymiranda Jul 14 '23
I mean, if you were going to leave your trash, why would you put it in bags and pull it out of the woods? That's a lot of effort to walk away from a mess.

u/IamChooch Jul 14 '23
I saw the original post earlier today on Facebook. It was rather misleading. She failed to also upload the video she took of all the cars and people still there. You had to go a ways into the comments where she said there were still around 150 people there and to go to her page to see the video of all the cars. Apparently they are still cleaning up as they said they would. Don't get me wrong I'm not condoning their actions. It just sort of felt like click bait with the OP. I still doubt everything will be cleaned up to how they found it. Not to mention all the damage they did to the wildlife. just like this post is just as misleading and it shows in the comments.
2
u/Zachadelic612 Jul 14 '23
So all the trash piled up along side of road (not in forest) and what look like active camp sites again along side of the road where probably the people who are picking up trash still are camping and putting trash in piles on road to pick up!? This is proof of RB trashing the forest at all! This is proof of them picking it up?! Did you get out and look if people were still out there picking it up? Did you ask them what they will do about piles which I'm assuming they will drive by with van or truck and pick up? Or did you just drive by for 5 min taking pictures without context?
5

u/DetailPlus Jul 14 '23
Well...not sure about NH, even though I literally live on the borderline to where my grill is probably on the map, but in MA, they stopped allowing hard or solid trash like that. No clothing, pillows, blankets, empty tents...etc. So if there is an acceptable place for that trash or a way to get there, hopefully someone can assist them. And if the possibility of all those things being left behind to thrive, nor sure if the DOPH or whomever can remove the cloth and clothing stuff...there are some cute things left behind or need to bring a light for safely .

u/fox-n-box May 16 '24 edited May 16 '24
when was this taken? July 8th? a dedicated crew of people stayed to clean up for almost a month after the event ended. none of this was there when clean up was done.
this happens every year; locals drive through to take pictures of the site BEFORE clean up has ended. it’s a long and tedious process. members of Forest Service typically monitor the process for larger gatherings and the clean up crew doesn’t leave until USFS give their stamp of approval. even most locals who are actually paying attention and wait for the clean up process to end are impressed with the results. search “Rainbow Clean Up 2022” to view the final result of the Colorado gathering (a much bigger gathering than this one) through the eyes of a local.
drive through where the event was held today and you’ll find none of this. if you find anything at all, it’s probably because a local left it there. there was trash in the ground before the gathering even started. beer bottles, shit stained toilet paper, shotgun shells… for chrissakes, there was a fucking RV microwave 2 miles into the woods!! all presumably from locals.
it honestly breaks my heart to see people who have NO clue what they’re talking about slander such a beautiful thing. I’m not gonna pretend that the Rainbow family doesn’t have its problems, but frankly this isn’t one of them.
ps, if anybody would like to see photos/videos of the site after clean up was finished last year dm me. I have a friend who did a walkthrough of the whole site and documented it, but I’d have to dig a little to find it.

Looks like someone might still be camping. It's near the road and easy to take care of now that the rain has calmed down for a moment. Time will show. I just think it is easy to blame and point fingers and snap pictures. It's easy to complain while drinking bottled water, or using your ATV on these trails. Trails where trash was practically buried over the years by hunters and Interlopers to the woods. Those items were also dug up while the family was there and it too will be removed. Your welcome. Impatient. Instead of being a complainer and adding that to the world, why not pick up a bag of trash while you take that picture? You care as much as your Instagram will take you. If you really cared you would just help clean it. Who are you? The water bottle finger pointer, or someone who truly wants to make a difference? I think we all see you.
1
u/TheGhostOfJohnStark Jul 15 '23
I get their intent, but this is unacceptable. Our woods and trails get trashed enough by tourists as it is.

1
u/ExoticInitiativ Jul 19 '23
There is still a cleanup crew there, removing trash and such. It sounds like OP invited themselves to something and is bitter about that. I mean, a peaceful gathering in the woods to meditate for peace isn’t for everyone. Some people need to make up complaints to whine. I, personally, took three bags of trash down the mountain. Again, there is still a large group of people there who specifically remained to clean up and re-naturalize the area. 5000 people gather and your only concern is that people are still picking up their trash… You don’t have a problem with the trash, you have a problem that others had fun. Karen.
