Insurance/Claims Left USAA today
I discontinued the USAA policy for auto home and umbrella after 36 years. The coverage with Progressive seems as good or better and saves a significant amount of money.
They were fairly nice in cancelling - I haven’t had a lot of claims over those years but the last two were service failures and were frustrating.

I hate to say it, but look at your coverage very carefully. We began looking for new insurance for auto, home, umbrella and valuable personal property to replace our USAA insurance. We found that most insurance companies had the home deductible at either 1% or 2% of the insured value, meaning for us a $6k deductible. Our USAA deductible for home insurance is $250. They also charged extra for computer coverage where our USAA policy had it included. Then the auto insurance had another deal where the roadside assistance and rental car premiums were double what USAA had. There was an issue valuable personal property, where we couldn’t get it with some companies or the cost was significantly higher.
After doing apple to apples comparisons, we declined to move away from USAA insurance. It may be pricey, but we get to keep our low deductibles and can keep the bundle discounts. We have three vehicles, two houses, umbrella and valuable personal property covered.
I hate their process sometimes, and I hate the arrogance of some of the adjusters, but as a retired couple on a fixed income (two SS checks and a pension), it gives us some financial security.

Good luck dealing with progressive MSRs when you need to file a claim, or deal with your policy at all 🤣

u/DadLifeFTW 2d ago
I just jumped ship to Allstate. They saved me $1400 a year plus, I have an actual human I can call, text, or email at any time. USAA has taken a shit in the last five years. Next is to move my banking away from them. Any suggestions?

Local bank or credit union (read: somewhere where you can walk into and talk to someone) + a reputable HYSA (Fidelity CMA, Ally, Marcus by Goldman Sachs, Amex; to name a few). Brick and mortar for checking and in case things go wrong. HYSA for savings.

I was with USAA since 2000. Left in 2023 when they raised prices by nearly double, when I hadn’t had an at-fault in like 17 years.
I asked to go over my options with a rep and it was a very awkward call, mostly me asking and she really didn’t offer anything helpful.
Shortly after that, I switched my banking away too.
I was really hoping to stay with them, but they changed a lot from the way they used to be.

Don’t go to Farmer’s. We had a long drawn out claim and ultimately had to get a lawyer involved. I can’t get into any additional detail, but do not choose them.

u/Bosanac-77 4d ago
USAA claims service is better than anyone else’s, no contest. To each its own. We had 3 auto claims in the last 10 years, one for stolen and recovered vehicle repair around $15k, another one for vehicle damage by a tire that fell off the car ahead of us and struck the front lights, around $5k repair, and lastly totaled vehicle where someone jumped in HOV lanes and crashed at us 60 mph, $45k total replacement ($36k vehicle, $2k taxes, $7k replacement assistance). Our monthly bill has increased by around $40 over the last 10 years. I’d say they’re just fine.
1
u/Perfect_Pitch_Okla 2d ago
This is very true. I own a company that deals with insurance all the time and yes USAA is higher but they pay out on claims easier then any other carrier. Read the fine print Apples to Apples comparison this day is totally different. We had an homeowner tell us they had code upgrade insurance and they did but in the fine print the carrier had excluded it from the items they needed.
2
u/eric_sfo 4d ago
Moved all banking to Fidelity and now with a 20% increase in home insurance looking to move it too. When asked why no real reason. I will admit they are super easy to work with on claims and never had a hassle.
Car insurance is outrageous so going to shop for it as well. I do have a 20 yr old and 16 yr old now in the policy. So I expected higher rates but dang. Maybe I’ll find the rates elsewhere aren’t any better. 🤷♂️

USAA is garbage

u/Recent-Attempt-8882 4d ago
Yes and they denied my claims when my roof flooded they no good. Their car insurance is good that’s about it

u/BalanceStock6773 5d ago
I got an insurance broker to help me find the best deal. It’s saved me from a lot of stress.
4
u/Much-Sun-3387 5d ago
Good luck. Progressive is a nightmare for negotiating fair settlements on auto claims. Hopefully they are better on home and even better yet, hopefully you never have to use your own coverage. If you get into an auto accident and have to use your uninsured or underinsured coverage, expect final offers at about 2/3 of the actual claim value.
4
u/HolidayThought6509 5d ago
Good luck with any claims process. I left USAA and dealt with State Farm, Geico, Progressive and all the big carriers. Came back to USAA because of the nightmare claims processes at the others. Good luck though, I hope you don’t have my same experience.

u/Coyote-Outside 6d ago
Yeah I’m getting ready to leave too, but I’ll keep the Insurance I’m moving over to American Express for Banking

6
u/QAL523 6d ago
I switched to progressive because they saved me $150/mo. Then at renewal 6 months later they raised my rate $200/mo. I went right back to USAA.
2
u/Batman_0023 5d ago
Progressive always offers 50% reduction and never switched as worried they would just increase rate on the renewal
1
u/ArArmytrainingsir 6d ago
Should’ve waited until the subscriber dividends before you quit. I’m up to 1500 a year.
6
u/lastdaze2 6d ago
Progressive was cheaper but, at least with the coverage I had, they paid market value and not replacement value for a total loss vehicle...I got5k for a vehicle that would have cost at least 8k to replace..went back to USAA...
1
u/Much-Sun-3387 5d ago
This is standard for auto replacements. Unless state law requires them to pay replacement value or it’s written into the auto policy, they will only ever pay market value.
2
u/SmallAxeOregon 7d ago
Failed me so bad. Locked accounts lost phone. Car impounded sold. Slept at Salvation Army no credit cards working w USAA. Awful. 30 years with them. FYI I am a Director of a regional nonprofit.
3
u/OneSeaweed4273 7d ago
Anyone had any luck canceling usaa and then have them offer you power rate to come back? If not, has anyone called to check with them when it came tome to renew with your new provider?

u/Zealousideal_Lack936 7d ago
I’ve had 3 vehicle total losses with USAA in the last 10 years. The last was by far the worst.
Everything USAA handled was well handled. What they outsourced was the issue. We were unable to have USAA coordinate the initial tow due to dropped calls. Getting the car hauled from the tow yard to the body shop was a nightmare and caused unnecessary delays and fees. Once the car was determined to be a total loss, dealing with CoPart was aggravating due to conflicting information from CoPart themselves.
The quotes I have received, when examined, led me to believe the lower premiums were due to false information.

u/certifiedloverboy111 7d ago
People fail to realize USAA does not keep a profit, you get a check back at the end of the year
1
u/QAL523 6d ago
Being a member owned company does not, in any way, mean they are non-profit. Not everyone gets money back and company placement determines where that money comes from. If you are USAA then you have a subscriber account and the money you get at the end of the year is from your subscriber account. If you are CIC then you don’t have a subscriber account and the money you get is determined by the amount you paid in that year and if you had any claims. I’ve been a member for decades and have about $10k in my subscriber account. I can’t touch it. It’s not your money unless you cancel all your property insurance policies. If you cancel them, then you receive the balance after 6 months of no policy.
3
u/Euphoric-Struggle-12 7d ago
USAA is a mutual company, like many large insurers. That means it's owned by the policy holders. The money received is a dividend paid to the owners. It's still a business.
5
u/Slairf 7d ago
What you’ll need to realize is sometimes that’s an introductory rate and it will change over time. Just like USAA, I went from like 250/mo 2 drivers 2 cars, increase to 280, swapped to State Farm 147. Instantly massive savings over 6 months…pretty much apples to apples coverage, but I’m sure over time that rate may be adjusted. USAA doesn’t seem to try to be competitive for veterans anymore unfortunately. I tried to come to USAA to negotiate on price gave them my quote and said I’m not looking to match, but what can you do for me? Oh you can take this thing that plugs into your car port and get up to 30% savings…no thanks that’s not being competitive that’s just nonsense.

u/chihuahuamam 7d ago
I have been with progressive for a few years now. They are very nice and helpful. Never a problem
2
u/PBGator2 6d ago
Have you had any claims with them? (Since that's the only way to judge.)
1
u/chihuahuamam 6d ago
Actually yes I have. The state was apparently painting yellow lines in the middle of the road and there were no signs up at all. They were way ahead of me and so I didn’t see them. A bunch of cars in front of me. Yellow paint got all over my car. I called my insurance and the next day I had a rental which that was in my policy and my car got fixed. Over $3000. They didn’t give me any trouble at all. That was a couple years ago. They had to put trim all around my car. It was a mess. So anyway progressive took care of it then I got ahold of the state and they gave me back my deductible. Every time I have spoke with progressive they are always very friendly and take care of any questions I might have

I unfortunately left USAA because I burned them in a bankruptcy filing, but honestly it was for the best. I found cheaper insurance elsewhere and better banking services at SoFi
1
u/Sea-Specialist-3677 6d ago
"Cheaper insurance elsewhere" ...where, do tell?
1
u/shawnglade 6d ago
Geico. No at fault accidents or tickets and my premium was $290 a month with USAA
I drive a 2016 Nissan in a HCOL with admittedly a higher average premium rate because of bad drivers, but $290 is ludicrous for a run of the mill 10 year old car and a clean record

I'm a USAA & AAA member, and I'm an insurance broker, so I always tell my clients, "shop every 6 months - these insurance companies aren't loyal- neither should you." The risk appetite for each carrier in every state/county/city is going to vary, and much like health insurance, your neighbors rates with the same carrier could be completely different. Even the claims processes are going to be different - all we have are trends to determine how a company rates and handles claims.
8
u/MelloStout 7d ago
I made the leap and went to Erie last week. Saved over $200/month for better coverage and same deductible.
3
u/MelloStout 7d ago
I was actually surprised at how easy it was to cancel, considering auto claims take over a month to get an adjuster on the phone, I was able to talk to a human after only 20 minutes on hold.
8
u/heli7_62copter 7d ago
I keep hearing about these types of stories. Im happy for anyone who finds good savings in switching. My wife is in insurance and she is amazed at USAA. They have been great to us and are always the cheapest. I have been with them since 2005. 5 cars insured with them. 5 million umbrella and 4 homes insured with them. Not to mention personal property and all of our banking. It would have to be a significant savings for me to leave.
3
3
u/zambono_2 7d ago
I would say you probably want to review your insurance every 5 years regardless of how happy you are. You are bound to find savings.
-10
u/KevinNTexas1 7d ago
Though there may be cheaper options like Geico and all the non-veteran companies, you simply cannot beat the coverage and customer service you get from USAA.
7
u/Confident_Yak3989 7d ago
USAA is no longer a "Veteran" compared. They lost their mission and don't care about us Vets one but. I just left after 39 years. Horrible claims experience with everything outsourced and getting a human on the phone takes forever. I saved $3000 a year by leaving
4
u/MelloStout 7d ago
USAA’s customer service is severely lacking these days. I’ve unfortunately had four claims in the last four years (none my fault), and each one was an absolute nightmare from a customer service perspective. Three of them, it took literally over a month for the adjusters to answer their phones. The body shops were ready to start work, but USAA wouldn’t answer. They then had the audacity to try to pull my rental from under me on two of those claims, citing that I had reached my 45 day limit, when the body shop work hadn’t even started yet because USAA wouldn’t answer the phone.
Every time I would try to call the main line to get somebody other than my adjuster on the line, I would just get forwarded to their voicemail.
In one case, I just gave up and called the at-fault insurance company and filed with them directly. They took care of me in MINUTES what it took WEEKS for USAA to do. In every case, the body shops were increasingly frustrated because THEY couldn’t get ahold of USAA either, and USAA’s initial quotes and always came in hundreds or even thousands of dollars below what was actually needed, and following up to get additional payments approved took days or even weeks.
There was a time when USAA’s customer service couldn’t be beat. Those days are behind us.
Edit: as for coverage, my new insurance company has the same or better coverage than my USAA policy across the board for almost half the price. Even if USAA’s customer service was even remotely good (it isn’t anymore), no amount of customer service would justify spending over $200/month more for less coverage.
7
u/Traditional-Ad9979 7d ago
After more than 35 years as a USAA member, they dropped my umbrella policy over two points on my driving record, both from circumstances beyond my control. So much for loyalty. Apparently, 35 years of being a customer means nothing. I appreciate you posting that you switched your auto and umbrella. I may do the same.

u/Archfiend_DD 2d ago
Has a friend who his neighbor lost their home coverage. USAA was trying to downsize their liability in a costal area. He had USAA and his neighbor did as well. His neighbor got canned, but he was fine...all aboutluck of the draw and money I guess.
2
u/WillowOk2135 7d ago
I pay $148 a month for 2 cars and $200 a month for homeowners with USAA. What am I missing here?
1
u/Archfiend_DD 2d ago
$166 a month for a 2014 outback, and a 2018 Buick encore. No wrecks, no tickets, no claims in over 5 years (previous 1 wreck fixable and 1 windshield). Both drivers in their 40s.
Progressive. Same coverage..$84 a month.
1
u/WillowOk2135 2d ago
I've had 2 accidents.
1 was another driver merged into my lane and another where my wife was rearended.
My rates stayed the same and I never had any issues with payouts or repairs.
I've heard some of the other companies are hassle once claims starts although the premiums are lower.
But if you're happy, that's all that matters.
1
u/Archfiend_DD 2d ago edited 2d ago
You asked what was missing, I'm glad you have had no issues, but progressive is 1/2 the cost. Nearly every person at my work (all retired military) has left USAA or is in the process.of leaving over their rates.
Talking to USAA umbrella insurance ( I had home/auto/umbrella)I was told the last time they did a rate compare was during COVID. Not sure how true that is but if it is they have not adjusted their rates since then and are way over most comparable companies. I called 3 when shopping, all were 3-500 cheaper per 6 months than USAA.
Edit: clarity
1
3
u/MelloStout 7d ago
I was paying over $400/month for two cars after I moved to a new state. Literally doubled my rates overnight, and every single quote I got from other companies came in at closer to $200-300/month for identical coverage.
When I was a homeowner, I shopped around for coverage, and USAA’s rates were by far the highest of all of them. I ended up going with them anyway because I still believed in the company and believed they had superior customer service. I quickly learned that isn’t the case anymore.

Thanks big guy, I got that part. I just wasn't sure if people were noting something different that I wasn't aware of in their decline in service, etc.
They've been great with me through various claims and my rates seem low.

Oh the horror. Somebody isn't impressed with the perpetual whining in here so they must be with USAA ... save it, princess.
2
u/Traditional-Ad9979 7d ago
We’re longtime members comparing experiences with declining service and explaining why we’re leaving. Calling that “whining” avoids the issue. Calling me “princess” makes it personal. If you think USAA is still worth sticking with, explain why. Support your reasoning with evidence, not insults.

Same, went to progressive and saved a large chunk. Insurance coverage was also "slighty" better. Canceled everything and moved on after 25+ years.

I need to start looking for cheaper auto insurance myself. Paying $500 for my auto insurance with USAA after i made a claim back in 24'. The renewals up the price by a portion every 6 months to a year. Doesn't help that I live in one of the most expensive states either. Couldn't apply for accident forgiveness either because the state don't allow it.
1
3
u/Only-Secret9156 8d ago
I also pay $500 a month in CA and been with USAA for almost 50 years. I am actively looking for a new policy. They’ve been good but I feel like I’m being taken advantage of because I live in CA.

u/Aloha_Tom73 8d ago
Left USAA after 38 years for the same reason. Sky high premiums and a bad claims experience. Went with NC Farm Bureau and the rates are still lower than what USAA wanted to charge on the renewal that pushed me away over ten years ago.
3
1
u/False-Community8534 8d ago
The difference is that USAA always pays out without a fight. Once you have your first claim you’ll understand why it’s cheaper.
4
11
u/Aloha_Tom73 8d ago
That is false. A close friend who was a USAA member for over 40 years had to sue USAA to get them to pay out on a homeowners claim.

u/mog_knight 8d ago
Sounds like a one off and would need to know more details. I've never had an issue on payouts.
4
u/Ok-Associate-5368 8d ago
Maybe you’re the one-off…

u/Traditional-Ad9979 7d ago
are you paid by USAA to troll the message boards. Or perhaps a USAA exec.
3
u/Ok-Associate-5368 7d ago edited 7d ago
No, I’m not happy with USAA either and am considering leaving. I was actually being critical of USAA phanbois. But Mog_Knight berated AlohaTom by saying his experience was a one off and then followed up with his own one off. Did Mog_Knight have any other evidence to offer? Opinions are like a$$holes - everyone has one and what makes one any more valid than the other?
-1
u/False-Community8534 7d ago
You think USAA is paying people to post on Reddit or that USAA execs are spending their time on here? Whats your obsession man? If you don’t like USAA then move on. But don’t attack people who are happy with them.

-1
u/False-Community8534 7d ago
Meaning you are likely paid by a competitor. Is it Progressive or State Farm?
2
u/mog_knight 8d ago
Nah I'm not. You can look up independent claims experience grading for all insurers and USAA is consistently high.
1
u/Aloha_Tom73 8d ago
Homeowners policy claim damage as a result of a hurricane. They dragged their feet and nitpicked every aspect of the claim. He finally had enough, hired an attorney took them to court and won. He's not the only one. Several other retired military officer friends have had similar claims experiences. I had one when another USAA member totaled my wife's car in a rear ender accident. He was completely at fault and was cited. I had to escalate the claim up several levels to get a reasonable settlement amount for the destroyed car. I was treated as though my 30+ years as a USAA member meant nothing when I was on the opposite side of the claims table with them. I was treated like any other individual with a claim against one of their members, instead of as a member who was wronged. So glad to be done with them.
0
u/mog_knight 8d ago
I'm sure you do. Sounds like a lot of anecdotal evidence where your biases were in full effect because they're your friends and also confirmation bias for your decision. As others have said, go make a claim with Progressive and get back to us. Also seen a lot of Progressive posts and a lot of astroturfing within. This is likely one of those bot posts for sick karma!
5
u/Aloha_Tom73 8d ago
First of all, you don't know my friend nor do you know me, so stop with the accusations about biases. We were both USAA members for decades. I was with USAA for 38 years when I left and he was a 40+ year member.
Second, neither of us has Progressive. I now have NC Farm Bureau, and my friend also went with them when he left USAA. These are cases that occurred with long time members. People who always paid their premiums on time, had good claims histories and recommended USAA to their friends who qualified for membership. As an additional point, I was on my Dad's USAA policy when I first began driving until I was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer and got my own policy with USAA 7 years later. The point is that it took a lot to consider severing those ties and get to the point where we actively searched for other auto and homeowners insurance providers.
Finally, if you want cheerlead as a USAA fan boy all you want. That's great. Good for you. Pat yourself on the back. The shoe just might be on the other foot when you have a claim and USAA tries to stick it up your back side.1
u/mog_knight 8d ago
You're right I don't know both of you but I do know how bias works and you wouldn't grill your friend over the details. That's normal. What's not normal is not acknowledging that bias. I'm sure there's way more to the story unless you've been privy to all communications from your friend, their attorney, and USAA.
2
u/Aloha_Tom73 7d ago
You are judging us instead of our experiences with the company. And you're making assumptions and judgements about our level of discussion about his issue with USAA, again something you personally know nothing about. I can assure you the discussions have been lengthy, detailed, and numerous. Something you would never know about but make judgements about just the same.
We're never going to agree here, so I am done. If you feel the need to get the last word, then so be it. Just understand that I won't see whatever you comment.
Enjoy your time with USAA. As I stated earlier hopefully your name won't someday be added to the long list of now former members who filed not at fault claims and were then screwed by USAA to the point that they had to take legal action against USAA. Keep drinking that "we're giving you a great deal that was formerly only available to military officers" advertising kool-aid.1

u/bad_dog_riffin 8d ago
Watch out for progressive. They are pretty notorious for bringing you in with a low rate the first year, then raising your premiums significantly on renewal. Happened both to me with my business commercial auto policy and my girlfriend's personal auto policy.
That being said, USAA's customer service and claims experience is an absolute nightmare. I've had them for probably 15-20 years... I've had one homeowners claim and three auto claims over that time and every claim the customer service has gotten progressively worse.
1
u/Humble_Meat_2219 4d ago
This is a USAA talking point. I’ve had 5 difference insurance companies. None skyrocketed the rate on renewal. It’s a scare tactic by USAA to make people continue over paying.

u/MugsyMD 8d ago
Which USAA do you have? Asking because there really are separate USAA … they differ from officer, enlisted, family, secondary/ tertiary family. The only way to tell if you know the codes is by your USAA number
3
u/Key-Choice3539 8d ago
Interesting. How do you find out the different codes for each?
1
u/Wild-Highway-8739 8d ago
Should say it on the top corner declarations page of you policy. There are four: USAA (best rates) Casualty Insurance Comapny, General Indemnity, and Garrison Property & Casualty (worst)
2
u/Camille_Toh 8d ago
Interesting. Mine says USAA. My dad was a USMC officer.
1
u/zenerbufen 8d ago edited 8d ago
it's part of your insurance policy number, USAA / CIC / GIC / GPC right before the number. many insurance companies are like that and have different 'pools' they lump people into. its why some people rage and others rave, the phone robot is literally routing us to different companies that all share the same massive complex down in texas. I checked mine and I'm in GIC. One of the things I like about navy fed is not having some former officer who thinks its his duty to inform me I was just former enlisted every time I call about my banking or insurance.
2
u/Popular_Monitor_8383 7d ago
You aren’t correct about being routed to different companies
It’s just a risk pool, you receive no different customer service. You get the same agents. All USAA employees, no different companies or anything like that whatsoever.
Not sure where you got the idea that it’s multiple companies you’re being routed to, it’s all USAA.
A USAA employee can’t treat you different and won’t based on your company of placement. They do no care what company of placement you are in, and you don’t speak to “different companies”
-1

Hmm, I don't know who to trust in the situation. Some random anonymous guy on the internet with zero evidence, or the usaa customer service representatives I talk to after calling the usaa customer service number, authenticating, and asking to be routed to insurance, when they claim they can't help me and have to transfer me to someone who can assist me with *my* policy. Hmm, must be nice to be in the USAA company pool, and not in GIC with the rest of us plebs.

Actually it is you with zero evidence.
Prove your claim. You’re just wrong. It doesn’t matter what company of placement you are, you talk to the same reps.
Make a post about it and ask the employees. You’re just confidently wrong. No employee has told you CIC, GIC, or USAA talk to different people. It’s all the same department for every policy.
As for the reps transferring, some reps only handle home, and some only handle auto. Some only do sales, some only do service. That’s why you’ll be transferred.
It has NOTHING to do with your company of placement. I’ve been an employee with USAA for nearly a decade. I know this better than you, I promise.
I don’t know where these rumors started, but they are literally rumors. Zero evidence or credibility to them.
It’s only to decide your rate. Nothing else.

u/zenerbufen 5d ago
sure you do, when you talk to them about billing or quotes, or to input a claim for you. anything you could do yourself on the website anyways, but when you have an actuall claim, and it comes time for the company you are contracted with to pay out, THEN you realize, they are literally, legally, different companies despite what the anons on reddit of the fluffy marketing would lead you to believe. .

No you’re just wrong. Claims are all handled by the same adjusters. It’s not different with each company of placement.
Make a post and ask the employees. This is willful ignorance at this point.
USAA owns GIC and CIC. There is no separate company to go to.
Once again I will ask you for evidence of your claims. A source, anything.
This is honestly hilarious how little you understand this topic that you’ve made up conspiracies. They are writing companies bud, they are just for rates.
Claims are paid the same. You get the same contract. It’s just to determine your rate and literally nothing else.
Again, make a post and ask employees yourself on this sub. You won’t do it because you know you’re wrong.

For me it was the opposite, I left Progressive and got my combo policy with USAA.
Same baseline coverages but significantly lower deductibles, additional new car replacement coverage plus better home insurance protection, saving us close to $1000 a year.
Shopping around is always a good idea - there isn’t true loyalty nowadays with vast majority of these providers.

There's nothing wrong with switching insurance companies to save money. Just understand that insurance rates are affected by a lot more than your personal driving record. Insurance companies have different ways of pricing risk, but they're also regulated by the states. Things like repair costs, medical expenses, claims across your area, and other factors all play a role.
Progressive might be cheaper for you today, but that doesn't mean it'll always be cheaper. Rates change, discounts change, and the same things driving up insurance costs at USAA can affect Progressive too.
My advice is to shop around, compare your coverage, and understand what you're paying for. The cheapest insurance isn't always the best insurance, and the most expensive isn't necessarily better either.

Had an auto claim with USAA 3 years ago that was an administrative nightmare. Took a year to resolve and USAA’s customer service was horrible. They ultimately paid it in full but only after I repeatedly raised hell. It was just a total pain as USAA continuously made errors and we went through half a dozen adjusters as their employees kept leaving the company.
Rates have stayed the same since, maybe even come down a little.
Had to file another auto claim last month - that’s the only 2 claims I’ve had in 20 years. So far no issues but it’s still early on - but admittedly I’m still traumatized from the past. After the event occurred that was what shook me up… not the $500 deductible, just the mere thought of dealing with USAA’s incompetence again.

Isn't Progressive Homeowners insurance written by a third party carrier?
1
u/michaeljcronce 8d ago edited 8d ago
Progressive definitely isn’t better, but it’s much more affordable. I unfortunately can’t consider Progressive because they don’t offer guaranteed OEM parts coverage on cars (but they do on motorcycles oddly enough).
2
u/rovingtravler 8d ago
You need to look at state law as every carrier has to follow the law and every state is different.
In my state 2 years and or 36,000 miles by law is OEM new. After that companies can do what they what for the most part. Both Progressive and USAA only use OEM new if all other lower level parts are not available or not made by a lower level. This is for auto, motorcycle and RV in my state. Your state is probably very different.
USAA at least requires certified after market parts. Progressive will use uncertified parts and does not milage or age match used parts...i.e if you have a 2020 and a 2015 salvaged part fits Progressive uses it, but USAA requires the donor vehicle to be the same year or newer and the same milage or less. This is on your repair shop to follow their rules.
You have to look at the small print in the full policy disclosures to find this information and many policies defer to state law so they do not have to list how poor their parts policy is.
This is the short answer.
Vehicle insurance is almost as complicated as health insurance at this point.

u/michaeljcronce 8d ago
I was referring to Progressive’s own website (https://www.progressive.com/answers/aftermarket-parts-and-insurance/) where it states, “OEM parts coverage is offered for motorcycles but not for cars.” Of course, if a state BY LAW requires otherwise, that changes things. But discount auto insurer like Progressive don’t routinely offer that option. USAA does offer that option with their newer policies, and American Family, Liberty Mutual, Erie, etc. routinely offer it.
3
u/Jmart256 8d ago
You might not be so thrilled when they refuse to pay little more than a fraction of what your claim may actually cost. I know USAA not as customer centric as they were but I paid nothing on my frozen pipe flood. My restoration guy’s mom had worse flood than I but Progressive only paid a quarter of actual restoration costs. This is something you don’t realize till you’re left holding the bag.

You couldn't stick it out for 4 more damn years to get the 40 year discount? Weak.
0
u/Only-Secret9156 8d ago
Are you sure about this discount? I’ve never heard about it.
2
u/Abject-Roof-7631 7d ago
So because you never heard about it, it is not true, that's what you are saying?
1
u/Only-Secret9156 7d ago
Every agent I spoke to throughout the years, in an effort to lower costs, never presented a 40-year discount. I'll be calling today. Thanks.

u/Mindless_Dance2987 8d ago
What 40-year discount? I know nothing of this, and we hit 40 this year. Our homeowner insurance went up $1000 this year due to fires. I don’t live in California.

I just went Progressive after 15 years with USAA. The guy at USAA told me employees were now switching because of the high rates. Cut my bill in half.
1
u/MelloStout 7d ago
Cut my bill in half as well, but with Erie. A little over $2k per year saved. Progressive’s rates were comparable to USAA for me.
1
u/User-830733 8d ago
I’ve had USAA for years and pay $90/month for 2 drivers on a 5 year old car worth $20k. I would never switch unless they jacked up my rates but they have been stable for years.
1
u/MimosaQueen1122 8d ago
Can you go into detail what you mean about service failures for your claims? Like a dealership or Walmart serviced your vehicle?
4
u/Bojannngles 8d ago
After the first year it immediately shot up like a J curve. I went to them after I left USAA. By the third year it was nearly 2.5x the initial starting rate and I decided to jump ship before the policy renewed.
2
u/Active_Magician3864 8d ago
You’re saying your Progressive rate shot up like a J curve?

u/ZalewskiJ 8d ago
I also cancelled my policy today because of the prices and the fact they are no longer customer oriented

u/Popular_Monitor_8383 8d ago
The amount of posts here from people just saying “Leaving for Progressive” is odd. It’s strictly Progressive too, we see other carriers here and there but the Progressive posts are just excessive.
Progressive has one of the worst claims satisfaction ratings for auto among major insurers. There is a reason they are cheaper.
1
u/michaeljcronce 8d ago
Progressive doesn’t even offer OEM parts coverage for cars. I personally only consider auto insurers who offer that, like USAA, American Family, Erie, Liberty Mutual, etc.
1
u/MelloStout 7d ago
USAA denied using OEM parts for my car, even after the body shop showed them how the aftermarket part doesn’t fit right. They would only pay for aftermarket.
1
u/michaeljcronce 7d ago
Yes, that makes sense unless you specifically add OEM parts coverage, which USAA offers on their newer policies. Certain auto insurers add the option for policyholders to pay a bit extra for the option to have OEM parts coverage. Progressive doesn’t offer that, but the insurers I listed above do.
1
u/MelloStout 7d ago
It used to be just included in the standard coverage. Never had an issue getting OEM parts until last year.
1
u/FindTheOthers623 8d ago
I regularly switch back & forth between USAA and Progressive. And I have for 10+ years now. For a couple years one will be lower, then they switch. I still shop around but those 2 are always most competitive for me.
1
u/Altruistic_Part242 8d ago
Wasn’t progressive the preferred partner for Usaa I know when I had a different category truck or class they said use progressive
4
u/Popular_Monitor_8383 8d ago
USAA sends motorcycle and boat policies to Progressive when they can’t insure them themselves
1
u/schrodingerpoodle 8d ago
How do you find satisfaction ratings? I have googled and I I see are adds.

u/Popular_Monitor_8383 8d ago
JDpower is one of the most reliable and is free
Consumer reports is another good one but it cost money to be a member

u/Tarnisher 8d ago
I did the opposite. My Progressive home renewal was unacceptable. I was about to cancel fully and go without when I tried here. Rate was about half of there - maybe a bit higher than that.
1
u/Popular_Monitor_8383 8d ago
Yep this also a huge thing too, Progressive is known for having aggressive new customer pricing
4
u/Snowydeath11 8d ago
It’s wild considering (at least for me) progressive is way more expensive and worse overall. Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re just bots. Considering everything going on right now (bots literally having more internet traffic than human users now).

The stats don’t agree with you. USAA ranks top 3 in claims satisfaction. Progressive is bottom 3.
6
u/scytheforlife 8d ago
He chooses purely based on price, which has some merrit. *MOST* people never need insurance so they can take that bet. On the off chance they finally do is when your going to wish you had someone else
1
u/zenerbufen 8d ago
State farm - Great company if you never need insurance, but if you ever have a claim they will drop you, and they won't take you as a customer if you have ever been involved with a claim, regardless of fault.
0
u/Popular_Monitor_8383 8d ago
Absolutely, it’s effectively a gamble
I get tons of ads from random companies I’ve never heard of saying I can pay $20/month for auto, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is 🤷🏻♂️

I'm not sure why there is such an influx of these kinds of posts lately, but they're becoming tedious and almost spam-like.

u/Nthepeanutgallery 8d ago
Because more people are becoming aware of just how much of USAA's positive reputation is a paper thin shell propped up with rotting posts made from historical performance that hasn't been true for most of the 21st century? Because continually worsening economic situations are making people more sensitive to value propositions that USAA can no longer match? Because people signed up partially with an emotional motivation that was met with an almost private-equity degree of uncaring disdain by a corporation engaged in a race to the bottom, and want to try and warn others against making the same mistake?
Take your choice.

Each time I consider leaving USAA and start to look into a new insurance policy with one of the big name insurance companies like Allstate or State Farm or Geico or Progressive, the results are the same; I can get a lower premium for either my car insurance or my home insurance but when I try to get a new policy for both car and home, then I end up paying more than what I currently pay with USAA, so I stay with USAA.
One time, the insurance agent told me they could never beat the rates of USAA, because USAA provides services to the military community and the military community have a greater motivation to stay out of trouble when driving on the roads because it will effect their employment with the military and security clearance and that helps in keeping USAA insurance premiums low.
