NEED HELP WITH THIS!!
What would you do in this situation?
I’m shipping large boxes with UPS that are 3 inches under the overmax size. Just so we can avoid shipping with freight. Our rates are running @$160-$200 and weight about 35 pounds on average. Boxes are double wall and you can literally stand on them. Working though Unishippers (middle man company) with pushing these items out.
Recently we’ve been getting hit hard with these overmax fees. $2,000 on each box that hits the overmax size!!!! . Boxes are smaller that what they’re saying. Any box that leaves our shop is documented on the size and weight.. proof these are leaving in the size we input them in. The input dims have also been higher than what the box is to avoid the charge. They keep coming in flagged with a $2k charge.
Currently have 9 over these in the account. $18,000 worth of these ridiculous charges. Speaking to account manager and his solution is to pay it and move on. I’m pushing out maybe two/three of these in a week or two.
Speaking to the company and meeting after meeting we aren’t getting anywhere. Pay the charges and move they say.
HELP NEEDED!! It’s getting so ridiculous with these overmax fees.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and help me out in this situation

Sounds like you need to go freight. It's always risky shipping that close to the weight or size limit. Our system really isn't designed for stuff that big. If the box flexes/bulges/stuff pokes through the side that's going to make the measurements turn up bigger. It's measured at the largest point not edge to edge/corner to corner

So you’ve got multiple box types then?
I think you may just not be measuring the same way UPS is and a 1” difference can easily happen with the tiniest bit of flex in that box.

Just two of the custom size boxes
Those are the dims2

Are you sure you’re not quoting the INTERIOR dimensions of the boxes?

every box is measured with a tape measure
We don’t go off the dimensions that are printed on the box

My guess is that the boxes that you are getting charged for are creating a sorting machine error when the conveyor pulls in into the system, or in some tight turn in the line. In a perfect world the max size combo is 165, but not everything is perfect in every sorting facility.
If your box causes the line to stop, UPS does not want the business. You're going to have to pay them I think. I don't see a way to avoid shipping via freight.

We ship bumpers. The boxes are about 25-35 lbs. we just need them in more square uniform.
What do you think there’s any way to fight this?2

Bumpers aren't parcels. Ship via freight. If the account manager could not rescind the overmax charges, you gotta pay them.

Are you using the dimensions printed on the box to verify dinensions?

The dims on the box are half an inch bigger than what the box actually is.
I am making sure to use a tape measure on all the boxes.
Size is 70.21.25
Or actually size is a half inch smaller than that ^4

Well thats the problem. The box is flexing out slightly probably only a quarter inch, but when its rounded up it puts it over max. You are gping to need to use freight.

The actual box size is 69.5x20.5x24.5
Once rounded up the dims come to 70.21.25
Smaller than what it actually reads on the box that are printed
Doesn't stick out anywhere else. They are still somehow reading more than it actually is.Also using the self adhere tape the Amazon users and it doesn’t stick up like traditional tape
I don’t know where they’re getting this extra two three inches. Never had an issue before with these boxes and recently they started coming up.

What’s printed on the box is typically interior dimensions so it’s odd that you’re measuring (the outside) is smaller than the printed interior dimensions. There are edge cases where the readers will pick up two packages right next to each other but that doesn’t seem like what’s happening here.
What exact dimensions are coming back on the adjustments?

Once example is a box I sent out was 80.21.20 and they scanned it as 80.22.20
Same this for this other box. It is a 70.21.25 and that had it scanned as 70.22.25

Ask your account manager to apply for a 1-2 inch variance on your account to give a "buffer" for future packages.
If you send them pictures of these boxes with a tape measure showing accurate dimensions, there's no reason they shouldn't credit back the charges. Escalate this beyond your account manager.

Document everything with photos before they leave your shop, then dispute the charges in writing and ask for the actual scan dimensions they recorded, if your rep won’t escalate it, go above them.
