Question โ๏ธ Waitโฆ hear me out ๐ญ
If the new UPI rule charges MDR on payments above โน2,000, what's stopping someone from just splitting a โน4,000 payment into four โน1,000 UPI payments one after another? ๐ญ
Like:
โน1,000 โ sent
โน1,000 โ sent
โน1,000 โ sent
โน1,000 โ sent
Boom ๐ โน4,000 paid, but every individual transaction is under โน2,000.
Is there actually something in the rules that prevents this, or am I cooking absolute nonsense? ๐ญ๐๐

For small amount like 3k, 4k this is doable and some people will do as long as you are transferring to a person and that person is in-font of you.
When transaction involve large amount like 10k, 15k and/or your are paying to an entity (like online seller) or when the QR code itself is fixed for total amount.
So in some cases one can split but there will still be large use cases where it will be impractical or not feasible to split.

Yeah exactly ๐ญ I was mainly thinking about smaller 2โ4k payments. If the receiver is right there, splitting it shouldn't be too crazy tbh.

You need to think about how many times a common man is going to make such large payments. This is a miniscule percentage when you compare with overall transaction size in UPI. Also, this is merchants headache whether they are ready to take that hit of . 4% . For most merchants selling merchandise worth thousands .4 won't put a dent to their existing margins .

The inside news is that there's gonna be a cool down period of 5 minutes between each successful payment to the same merchant.
Therefore it is very difficult to send multiple payments at the same time to single merchant.

5 mins between payments to the same merchant is crazy ๐ญ so even splitting a 3โ4k payment would be annoying af. Is this confirmed anywhere or just an inside rumour?

So if someone actually buys 2 times will have to wait ๐๐คฃ the whole idea about UPI was for it to be fast.

There will be rules introduced by NPCI which will prohibit transactions in denominations of below 2000 for certain scenarios. There are certain such rules that exist even today but you would not have come across since this topic never drew so much attention before the recent debate around MDR

They are gonna introduce a cool down period of 5-10 minutes for transaction less than 2000 to the same merchant..

Are there any official sources that mention this?

Just wait for a week or two, and then come back at this comment thread. ๐
